Exposure to ambient ozone has been associated with increased human mortality. Ozone exposure can introduce oxygen-containing functional groups in particulate matter (PM) effecting a greater capacity of the particle for metal complexation and inflammatory effect. We tested the postulate that (1) a fulvic acid-like substance can be produced through a reaction of a carbonaceous particle with high concentrations of ozone and (2) such a fulvic acid-like substance included in the PM can initiate inflammatory effects following exposure of respiratory epithelial (BEAS-2B) cells and an animal model (male Wistar Kyoto rats). Carbon black (CB) was exposed for 72 hours to either filtered air (CB-Air) or approximately 100 ppm ozone (CB-O3). Carbon black exposure to high levels of ozone produced water-soluble, fluorescent organic material. Iron import by BEAS-2B cells at 4 and 24 hours was not induced by incubations with CB-Air but was increased following coexposures of CB-O3 with ferric ammonium citrate. In contrast to CB-Air, exposure of BEAS-2B cells and rats to CB-O3 for 24 hours increased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and lung injury, respectively. It is concluded that inflammatory effects of carbonaceous particles on cells can potentially result from (1) an inclusion of a fulvic acid-like substance after reaction with ozone and (2) changes in iron homeostasis following such exposure.Differentiating test article-related vascular changes from spontaneous findings is important for microscopic interpretation in drug safety evaluation studies intended for regulatory submission. Here, we report background spontaneous hepatic artery degeneration and necrosis in up to 20% of 3- to 9-month-old control male Sprague-Dawley rats in 23 individual safety studies. The vascular degeneration occurred in one cross section of a medium-sized hepatic artery near the hilus and ranged from acute intramural hemorrhage and fibrinoid necrosis to chronic fibrosis of the vascular wall with perivascular edema, hemorrhage, and inflammatory cell infiltrates. The cause was uncertain. Many microscopic features were consistent with systemic necrotizing arteriopathy (SNA) or polyarteritis; however, there was no change in arteries commonly affected in SNA/polyarteritis (mesenteric, pancreatic, or testicular arteries) and hepatic artery degeneration/necrosis occurred in younger rats which is unusual for SNA/polyarteritis. Spontaneous hepatic artery degeneration/necrosis represents a sporadic background finding that may be confused with a test article's toxicologic effect.The hierarchical mapping technique is utilized to study individuals' social convoys (i.e., networks). Though convoys typically exclude deceased persons, the continuing bonds model argues that relationships between surviving and deceased persons can be sustained. After Death Communication (ADC), an experience where the deceased contacts surviving persons, facilitates continuing bonds. This study examines how ADC influences reports of convoys and continuing bonds. Using Labov's narrative framework, ADC narratives from 10 bereaved individuals were analyzed for content and structure. Most participants apologized, indicating their ADC experience was inexplicable. Consequently, reports of convoys and continuing bonds may be influenced by concerns of perception.A microbial fuel cell is a biological electrochemical system that extracts electrons stored in organic matter by oxidation using catalytic properties of microorganisms at bioanode. The major problem in such device, is however limited power production due to slow kinetic of oxygen reduction at cathode. It is worthwhile to develop new materials that fulfil these requirements. The polymerization of aniline onto carbon cloth for effective electrodeposition of platinum nanoparticles has been carried out by chronoamperometry and cyclic voltammetry. Three materials were thus elaborated, namely pristine carbon cloth, carbon cloth modified with platinum and carbon cloth modified by polymerization of aniline for immobilization of Pt-nanoparticles. The FTIR spectroscopy analysis revealed characteristic band located in 1720-1650 cm-1, attributed to imine function, main component in skeleton of polymer PANI chain. The modified materials have been utilized as cathode in cell inoculated with medicinal plant wastes for improvement of oxygen reduction. Modified cathode with CC-PANI-Pt proved higher performances in all respects increase of cell voltage from 338 to 765 mV and power density from 862 to 1510 mW/m2 and abatement of COD of microbial inoculum leachate to 88%. Another feature of cell with modified cathode CC-PANI-Pt, was the enormous electric charge density harvested upon oxidation of 1 mL of acetate 7.62 C/cm2 compared to that of cell with pristine CC cathode 0.54 C/cm2. Nevertheless, coulombic efficiency for conversion of medicinal plant wastes into bioenergy was relatively lower 9%, making in evidence that elaborated electrochemical device was rather efficient and benificial environmentally than energetically.
Social media has become an integrated part of nursing profession, requiring nursing students to develop confidentiality and professional fitness to practice. The aim of this study was to investigate nursing students' usage, professionalism and attitudes toward social media.

A cross-section study was conducted online among undergraduate nursing students (n = 654). Questionnaires of self-directed learning, self-efficacy and usage and views toward social media were administered.

Ethical approval was obtained from the Hubei University of Chinese Medicine.

All participants were social media users. QQ (93.2%) was the most frequently used. 74.5% respondents spent 2-6 h on social media daily. The majority held positive attitudes toward social media. selleckchem Year group and gender had influence on perceptions and attitudes toward social media. Furthermore, 81.5% students believed that social media positively influenced self-directed learning. Self-directed learning and learning motivation acted as predictors of the attg in nurse education should be implemented to help students to be informed of professionalism.
Nursing students use social media extensively. Some students are at risk of carrying out unprofessional behavior which have detrimental effects on students' future opportunities. This suggests that best practices and training in nurse education should be implemented to help students to be informed of professionalism.
