How to Choose the Best Hob
When deciding on the best hob there are a variety of factors to take into account. From price to energy efficiency. Choose the features that are the most important.
A basic ceramic electric hob costs just PS100. However, you will need to pay more for one with many features. Gas hobs, which are also popular and offer great temperature control, but are more expensive, are another alternative.
1. Haier I-Flex Induction Hob
With four cooking zones and three 'Push&Go' functions this cooker from Haier will allow you to cook quick meals. It was one of the fastest to boil water in our tests, taking only four minutes. It's child lock-compatible and features an pause feature, meaning you can quickly stop the process without having to fiddle around using controls.
Its design is sleek, contemporary and blends well with contemporary kitchens. It is typically made from glass (which is shatterproof and heatproof) or ceramic. The controls are touch-sensitive and sit directly on the worktop.
The controls were easy to operate and we loved the display that displays the current power level and which zone is currently in use. The "Boost" feature creates high-powered heat in a brief time. It's ideal for stir-frying and rapidly heating up pans. Safety features like the hob light that is hot or automatic shut-off are also useful.
However it's not as responsive to touch as other hobs we tested. It took nine presses to reach maximum temperature, in comparison to seven or six for other models. It takes a bit longer for the pan to react when you alter the temperature. It is possible to adjust the settings several times to achieve the correct temperature.
This 60 cm model features four cooking zones. One of the zones is a half-flex which allows two areas to easily be joined to accommodate larger pots or pans. Dual-ring design permits it to operate at both "normal" and "boost" power levels. Boost is ideal for frying meat, searing it or bringing pans of water to the rapid boiling point.
It's fully integrated with the hOn app and comes with 100's of recipes with guided cooking and 30 special programs that are divided into various food categories and preparation types. It has a multislider control panel with a 'lockable interface' that detects the type of pan you're using to set the correct cooking mode. It's also compatible with third-party hOn sets and comes with a variety of safety features, like the control panel that can be locked and boil-dry protection.
2. Smeg I-Flex Induction Hob
When you're doing work in your kitchen or seeking a better alternative to gas induction hobs, induction hobs are becoming more popular. Prices have dropped dramatically in the last few years. Basic four-zone models can be found for less that PS100. If you want the latest induction technology, it's worth paying a little more.
This sleek model from Smeg features the latest induction technology to make your cooking efficient and easy. The Auto-pot detection system recognises pots with an overall diameter of at least 9 centimetres and automatically will activate the appropriate zone.
Smeg's main focus is on energy efficiency however, it doesn't overlook the possibility of flexibility. The hob can be adjusted to save power based on the maximum temperatures that the zones can operate at. There are other options to save energy by using the Eco-Logic advance mode, which reduces the power output from 11.1 kW to as low as 2.4 4 kW.
Testers were awed by the hob's user-friendly design that has intuitive controls that move along the edges of the hob to follow your pan. The control panel's colour-coded scheme makes it easy to determine the state of each zone. The 'Flexi Duo" feature lets the connection of two zones to accommodate larger pans. There are Best ovens UK of useful functions, including four automatic cooking presets (melting boiling slow cooking, and keeping warm) and a Power Boost for super-quick results.
Additionally the hob also has a 'FlameSensor' which alerts you when there is a risk of a burning or burning food. There are a variety of safety features, including a residual heat indicator as well as an auto switch-off if the surface is too hot.
It also resists hard stains and comes with a protective coating of CleanProtect. The stove is simple to set up and features nine power levels and the handy FlexiDuo feature for catering to large pans. There are some additional features, such as control locks, as well as a safety fuse to protect against accidental button pushing.
3. Indesit I-Flex Induction Hob
Induction hobs are powered by electricity and not gas. They make use of copper plates to create an electric force when a pot or pan is placed on them. This means they can heat up faster than gas hobs and can also reduce energy consumption since the cooking area only heats up when you turn on the pan. They're generally less expensive to run than gas and are simpler to clean making them an extremely popular option.
Indesit's induction hob is full of features to help you be creative when cooking. It comes with two distinct zones which can be combined into the Dual Zone to accommodate larger pans, as well as a speedy booster zone that can quickly bring water to a boil. A range of automatic functions such as Push&Go lets you cook your food perfectly at the touch of one button. The controls are simple to operate and allow you to select nine power modes including a P boost setting that gives maximum power to each zone for five minutes.
The controls are simple to use, and the minimalist design is ideal for a modern kitchen. In our tests, it was able to boil pasta water in a flash and quickly heated up when we put an oven on the Booster zone. However it took an extended time to cool off after we shut off the hob. Additionally, our test participants were unable to determine the precise temperature on the control panel.
In addition to the Dual Zone and Push&Go, this Indesit hob comes with a bridge function that lets you combine two cooking zones to suit larger pans. It also has a child lock and overheating block as well as an auto shut-off feature that stops the appliance from working when it's too hot. Our test subjects were pleased that there were no visible flames or flammable substances and the glass was easy to clean. Contrary to traditional extractor hoods vented hobs draw steam and smoke out of the pan and out of the room via an air duct that is built into the surface. Our experts thought the duct of this hob was simple to keep clean, although it required two people to lift the filter out and change it.
4. GE Induction Hob
Consider how the hob can be able to fit into your kitchen's layout and design, as well as the style of cooking you prefer. For instance, if frequently cook with children or elderly people in mind, security features such as automatic shut-off and cool to the touch surface may make an induction stove a better choice. If you're looking for speed and efficiency, a ceramic glass front on an electric hob is the ideal choice. Gas hobs are an excellent alternative for those living in areas prone to power outages.
