Single-cell transcriptomics offers a powerful way to reveal the heterogeneity of individual cells. To date, many information theoretical approaches have been proposed to assess diversity and similarity, and characterize the latent heterogeneity in transcriptome data. Diversity implies gene expression variations and can facilitate the identification of signature genes; while, similarity unravels co-expression patterns for cell type clustering. In this review, we summarized 16 measures of information theory used for evaluating diversity and similarity in single-cell transcriptomic data, provide references and shed light on selected theoretical properties when there is a need to select proper measurements in general cases. We further provide an R package assembling discussed approaches to improve the researchers own single-cell transcriptome study. At last, we prospected further applications of diversity and similarity measures in support of depicting heterogeneity in single-cell multi-omics data.The microstructure design based on the development of heterostructure provides a new way for high strength and ductility Mg alloys. However, the wear property, as an important service performance, of Mg alloys with heterostructure is scarcely investigated. In this work, a high strength and ductility AZ91 Mg alloy with multiheterostructure was prepared via a processing route combined industrial-scale equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and aging. The multiheterostructure consists of the heterogeneous grain structure and heterogeneous precipitates. The dry sliding wear behavior of this multiheterostructured (MH) alloy is investigated compared to the as-cast alloy. The impacts of the applied load and duration time on the wear volume and coefficient of friction (COF) are analyzed, and the wear mechanism is further discussed. The result indicates that although the MH alloy exhibits high-desirable strength-ductility synergy, it shows a poorer wear resistance but a relatively lower COF compared to the as-cast alloy at the present condition. Sulbactam pivoxil cost The wear mechanism of both alloys mainly involves abrasive wear, as well as mild adhesion, delamination, and oxidation. In comparison, the MH alloy shows relatively severe adhesion, delamination, and oxidation. The present study aims to evaluate the relationship between 25-OH-Vitamin D, total calcium, and the following data Cobb angle, age, and patient sex. The seasonal variation for vitamin D will also be taken into consideration. A total of 101 patients with a mean age of 11.61 ± 2.33 years had vitamin D and calcium levels tested. The mean Cobb angle was 26.21o ± 12.37. The level of vitamin D was, on average, 24 ng/mL ± 9.64. Calcium values were within the normal range, with an average of 9.82 mg/dL ± 0.42. The male group showed lower levels of vitamin D compared to the female group (19.6 vs. 25.45 ng/mL) (p = 0.02). Seasonal variations showed significant differences for vitamin D (p=.0001). Vitamin D level was positively correlated with the calcium level (p=0.01, r=0.973), but also with the patient's age (p less then 0.001, r=0.158). The Cobb angle was negatively correlated with serum vitamin D levels (p less then 0.01, r=-0.472). Patients included in this study had low vitamin D levels, significant differences being observed between boys and girls, boys being more affected. The positive correlation between vitamin D and calcium, together with the negative correlation with the Cobb angle, is yet another proof that patients with idiopathic scoliosis should be investigated regularly for these pathologies.A first ray dorsiflexion osteotomy is commonly performed for cavovarus foot correction. There are multiple techniques to fix this osteotomy, ranging from wires, screws, and plates or a combination of these. We present our results using a varisation staple (Biomet©) as an alternative fixation device. We performed a retrospective outcome analysis of a consecutive series of 10 cavovarus feet that underwent a dorsiflexion osteotomy (dorsal closing wedge) of the first metatarsal fixed with two varisation staples. The results were measured at a mean three monthly follow-ups and included union and complication rates, as well as clinical and radiographic assessment of cavus deformity correction. There was a 100% union rate with no complications or cases of delayed union. No metalwork removal was requested in any case at follow-up. First ray dorsiflexion osteotomies are most commonly fixed using a 3.5mm cortical screw. We demonstrate that our alternative and novel technique using varisation staples achieved a 100% union rate while avoiding the prominent hardware complications known to occur with cortical screws or plates.The role of the renin-angiotensin system in hypertension and end-organ damage has long been recognized. Angiotensin l converting enzyme inhibitors are superior to other antihypertensive agents in protecting the kidney against progressive deterioration, even in normotensive persons. Likewise, angiotensin II type 1 receptor antagonists improve or even reverse glomerulosclerosis in rat animal models. These findings suggest that Angiotensin II has nonhemodynamic effects in progressive renal disease. The renin-angiotensin system is now recognized to be linked to the induction of plasminogen activator-inhibitor-1, possibly via the AT4 receptor, thus promoting both thrombosis and fibrosis. Interactions of the renin-angiotensin system with aldosterone and bradykinin may impact both blood pressure and tissue injury. The beneficial effect on renal fibrosis of inhibiting the renin-angiotensin system likely reflects the central role that angiotensin has in regulating renal function and structure by its various actions. This article explores the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system with plasminogen activator-inhibitor-1 interaction and the potential significance of these interactions in the pathogenesis of progressive renal disease and remodeling of renal sclerosis.
