Erythrocyte phenotyping is a very important test in the adoption of prophylactic measures to reduce transfusion reactions/alloimmunizations in polytransfused patients. The blood group Diego, in its current, form has 22 antigens, of which 4 are immunogenic, being Diª/Di
and W
/W
, while the others are less expressive. The antigen Diª is of low incidence among whites and blacks, however, it is common in the South American indigenous and Asian Mongolian populations. It is also considered a system of clinical importance for its immunogenicity.

The present study aimed to carry out a retrospective and descriptive survey of the frequency of the Diª antigen in the blood donor population at the HEMOPA Foundation Coordinating Blood Center from 12/2018 to 1/2000. The data obtained were from the HEMOPA Foundation SBS Progress and SBS WEB Systems databases.

During this period, 941,744 blood bags were collected and, of these, 930 bags were phenotyped for the Diª antigen, of which 842 were negative and 88 (9.7%) positive. The research showed that, among the positive donors for the antigen Diª, 88.6% were brown, 3.4%, black and 8%, white. In the statistical analysis, the frequency observed was higher in browns.

In the present investigation, we concluded that our region has a relatively higher frequency of the Diª antigen, when compared to the rest of Brazil, and it occurs more often in browns.

To evaluate published literature on the associations between perinatal substance use (PSU), perinatal depression and anxiety (PDA), and known maternal-newborn outcomes.

We conducted a systematic search of health-related databases, including PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE, and Embase. Search terms included maternal mental health, substance use, postpartum, opioid, alcohol, methamphetamine, addiction, dependence, pregnancy, depression, and anxiety.

We included English-language, peer-reviewed reports of primary research and systematic reviews that were published between 2010 and 2020 and focused on PSU and PDA. We excluded commentaries, nonsystematic reviews, and articles on maternal mental health other than PDA. Fourteen of 379 articles met the inclusion criteria.

We used the Joanna Briggs Institute Review Guidelines to guide extraction of the following data author(s), year of publication, type of study, country of origin, study sample, targeted substance(s), mental health, key findings, and recommendation(s).ts on maternal and infant outcomes.Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disorder in Western nations and characterized by excessive accumulation of lipids in the liver. In this narrative review, we summarize the evidence from human trials that free radical-induced oxidation of macromolecules, in particular of lipids, is a characteristic feature of NAFLD and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). selleck compound We further synthesize the data in the scientific literature describing the impact of vitamin E (mainly α-tocopherol) on concentrations of redox biomarkers in liver biopsies from patients with NAFLD as well as animal experiments. In summary, the available evidence from clinical trials suggests that reactive species-mediated damage to macromolecules, predominantly lipids, occurs in NAFLD and NASH and that daily supplementation with at least 200 I.U. α-tocopherol may alleviate oxidative stress in the liver of NAFLD patients. We propose α-tocopherol as a useful model substance to identify and validate suitable redox biomarkers that may be employed in future clinical trials of new therapeutics for NAFLD.Infant resuscitation devices used at birth must be capable of delivering adequate and consistent ventilation in a controlled and predictable manner to a wide patient weight range, and combinations of transitional lung states. Manual inflation resuscitation devices delivering positive pressure lung inflation at birth can be classified broadly into two types 1) flow generating, ie silicone self-inflating bags (SIB) also known as bag valve mask (BVM) and 2) flow dependent, ie anaesthetic flow inflating bag (FIB) and t-piece resuscitator (TPR) systems (eg Neopuff, GE Panda and Draeger Resuscitaires). Globalization, lower production costs, and an expanding market need for devices, has led to a proliferation of brands (both reusable and single use) within a class type. T-piece resuscitators have become the dominant device particularly in high income countries. There remains a paucity of information on the performance characteristics of these devices and their ability to provide the required respiratory parameters for effective and safe ventilation across the full-expected weight range and lung states to which they will be applied. This review aims to inform current clinical practise on the biomechanical efficiency, reliability and efficacy of the most common devices used to apply PPV to newborns and infants ≤10 kgs. This chapter on therapeutic drift with antenatal steroids will make the case that this pilar of treatment to improve the outcomes of preterm infants, despite multiple Randomized Control Trials (RCTs) and meta-analysis, has multiple gaps in solid clinical data to support any expanded use of Antenatal Corticosteroids (ACS). A basic problem is that agents used for ACS have never been evaluated to minimize fetal exposures. Based on the premise that all drug exposure to the fetus should be minimized and only used when necessary, ACS is a potent developmental modulator that has never been evaluated to minimize the dose and duration of fetal exposure. The use of ACS is expanding to late preterm infants where the benefit is modest, to elective C-sections, and periviable fetuses, with minimal RCT data of long-term benefit. Relevant animal experiments demonstrate that much lower doses will induce lung maturation in sheep and primates. Another area of drift in the use of ACS is based on the assumption that the old RCT data accurately predict the magnitude of benefit when ACS is used today with entirely different OB and neonatal care strategies to improve outcomes.
