A contaminated zone elongated toward Futaba Town, north-northwest of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP), contains highly radioactive particles released from reactor Unit 1. There are uncertainties associated with the physio-chemical properties and environmental impacts of these particles. In this study, 31 radioactive particles were isolated from surface soils collected 3.9 km north-northwest of the FDNPP. Two of these particles have the highest particle-associated 134+137Cs activity ever reported for Fukushima (6.1 × 105 and 2.5 × 106 Bq per particle after decay-correction to March 2011). The new, highly-radioactive particle labeled FTB1 is an aggregate of flaky silicate nanoparticles with an amorphous structure containing ~0.8 wt% Cs, occasionally associated with SiO2 and TiO2 inclusions. FTB1 likely originates from the reactor building, which was damaged by a H2 explosion, after adsorbing volatilized Cs. The 134+137Cs activity in the other highly radioactive particle labeled FTB26 exceeded 1g reactor meltdown.Pesticides and degradates are ubiquitously detected in municipal wastewater influent in the United States. However, little detailed information exists on their sources. The aim of this study is to investigate California Pesticide Use Report (PUR) and sales data to identify pesticide uses with a high potential for indoor down-the-drain (DtD) transport. The DtD transport of pesticides could result from direct applications to drains and sewers or through indirect activities such as washing pets, treated textiles, laundries, and cleaning surfaces treated with pesticides. An initial screening on pesticide products registered in California with DtD potentials showed that fipronil, imidacloprid, and seven pyrethroids were pesticides of concern due to the relatively high sales in DtD use patterns and high toxicity to aquatic organisms; and thus prioritized for additional evaluation. Uses and sales data of products containing the selected pesticides were analyzed for mass of active ingredient applied with specific DtD pathways and by different user groups. Professional uses were retrieved from the PUR and consumer uses were estimated by comparing PUR data to sales data. Overall, approximately 38,615 kg fipronil, 44,561 kg imidacloprid, and 240,550 kg pyrethroids were used annually in California from 2011 to 2015 with some likelihoods of DtD transport. The shares of professional use ranged from 56% (cypermethrin) to 98% (cyfluthrin), depending on the pesticide, with the majority of the mass applied in and around structures and for some pesticides (imidacloprid and permethrin) on landscapes as well. The remaining mass was applied by consumers on various DtD sources, including pet treatments (fipronil, imidacloprid, and permethrin), treated textiles (permethrin), indoor-only uses (cypermethrin), and mixed indoor/outdoor or outdoor-only applications (other pyrethroids). Results from this study help elucidate the relative significance of specific DtD pathways and pesticide occurrence in California waste streams.Mangrove ecosystems are natural nitrogen removal systems that are primarily mediated by nitrogen cycle microorganisms, but their relative contributions to nitrogen transformation and removal in mangrove sediments under anthropogenic nitrogen input needs further resolution and characterization. Here, we investigated the responses and the relative contributions of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), anaerobic ammonium oxidizing (anammox) bacteria and denitrifying bacteria after spiking urea into mangrove sediments incubated in a laboratory microcosm experiment for four weeks. During incubation, the diversity, abundances and transcription levels of the hzo genes for anammox bacteria, amoA genes for AOA and AOB, and nirS genes for denitrifying bacteria were monitored using targeted gene clone library analyses and quantitative PCR assays at the DNA and RNA levels. The results showed that mangrove sediments harbour habitat-specific anammox bacteria which related to Candidatus Scalindus.Aqueous phosphate uptake is needed to reduce global eutrophication. Negatively charged adsorbent surfaces usually give poor phosphate sorption. Chemically- and thermally-modified lignite (CTL) was prepared by impregnating low-cost lignite (RL) with Ca2+ and Mg2+ cations, basified with KOH (pH ̴ 13.9), followed by a 1 h 600 °C pyrolysis under nitrogen. selleck chemical CTL has a positive surface (PZC = 13) due to basic surface Ca and Mg compounds, facilitating the aqueous phosphate uptake. CaCO3, MgO, Ca(OH)2, and Mg(OH)2 surface phases with 0.22 μm particle sizes were verified by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, and EDX before and after phosphate uptake. Higher amounts of these mineral phases promoted more CTL phosphate uptake than raw lignite (RL) and thermally treated lignite (TL) without Ca/Mg modification. Phosphorous uptake by Ca2+/Mg2+ occurs not by classic adsorption but by stochiometric precipitation of Mg3(PO4)2, MgHPO4, Ca3(PO4)2, and CaHPO4. This offers the potential of substantial uptake capacities. CTL's phosphate removal is pH-dependent; the optimum pH was 2.2. Water-washed CTL exhibited a maximum Langmuir phosphate uptake capacity of 15.5 mg/g at pH 7, 6 and 14 times higher than that of TL and RL, respectively (particle size less then 150 μm, adsorbent dose 50 mg, 25 mL of 25-1000 ppm phosphate concentration, 24 h, 25 °C). The unwashed CTL exhibited a maximum Langmuir phosphate removal capacity (80.6 mg/g), 5.2-times greater than the washed CTL (15.5 mg/g). Insoluble Ca2+ and Mg2+ phosphates/hydrophosphate particles dominated CTL's phosphate removal. Phosphates were recovered from both exhausted unwashed and washed CTL better in HCl than in NaOH. P-laden washed CTL exhibited a slow phosphate leaching rate under initial pH of 6.5-7.5 (52-57% over 20 days) after phosphate uptake, indicating it could serve as a slow-release fertilizer. Unwashed CTL retained more phosphates than washed CTL (cumulative qe for 4 cycles = 391.8 mg/g vs 374.7 mg/g) and potentially improves soil fertility more.Understanding the process of methanogenesis in paddy fields under the scenarios of future climate change is of great significance for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and regulating the soil carbon cycle. Methyl Coenzyme M Reductase subunit A (mcrA) of methanogens is a rate-limiting enzyme that catalyzes the final step of CH4 production. However, the mechanism of methanogenesis change in the paddy fields under different elevated CO2 concentrations (e[CO2]) is rarely explored in earlier studies. In this research, we explored how the methanogens affect CH4 flux in paddy fields under various (e[CO2]). CH4 flux and CH4 production potential (MPP), and mcrA gene abundance were quantitatively analyzed under C (ambient CO2 concentration), C1 (C + 160 ppm CO2), and C2 (C + 200 ppm CO2) treatments. Additionally, the community composition and structure of methanogens were also compared with Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The results showed that C2 treatment significantly increased CH4 flux and MPP at the tillering stage. E[CO2] had a positive effect on the abundance of methanogens, but the effect was insignificant.
