In most African countries, street vending of fruits is prevalent and the likelihood of predisposing consumers to microbial contamination is very high. This study aimed to determine various bacteria and risk factors that are associated with fruits sold by street vendors in Accra. Sliced watermelons and pawpaws were randomly purchased from selected suburbs in Greater Accra Region of Ghana. One gram (1 g) of each watermelon and pawpaw was homogenized in 9 ml of sterile peptone water, and 0.1 ml from each serial dilutions of each fruit was spread on plate count agar, blood agar, and MacConkey agar plates for total aerobic counts and coliform counts. Agar plates were incubated at 33-37°C for 18-24 h. Bacterial identification was done by standard bacteriological methods. Additionally, questionnaires were administered to the vendors to gather data on food hygiene and knowledge on foodborne illness. The study revealed that although some of the fruit vendors were educated on food hygiene, most sold fruits were contaminated with mean total aerobic plate counts of 2.6 × 105-8.1 × 105 CFU g-1 and 3.7 × 104-7.1 × 104 CFU g-1 for watermelon and pawpaw. The mean coliform counts for pawpaw and watermelon ranged between 1.2 × 103-8.1 × 103 CFU g-1 and 1.6 × 104-3.1 × 104 CFU g-1, respectively. Overall, mean aerobic counts and mean coliform counts were not significantly different among vendors in selected locations (p > 0.05). However, predominant bacteria isolated included Enterobacter species (33.3%), Citrobacter sp. (20.0%), and Klebsiella sp. (15.9%). The study revealed that watermelon and pawpaw sold on the streets in Accra could be possible source of foodborne illness. Therefore, street food vendors must be educated on food hygiene protocols and measures to improve microbial quality of street vended fruits.The Sudd wetland is one of the oil-rich regions of South Sudan where environmental pollution resulting from oil extraction activities has been unprecedented. Although phytoremediation is the most feasible technique, its efficacy reduces at high TPH concentration in soil. This has made rhizoremediation the most preferred approach. Rhizoremediation involves use of a combination of phytoremediation and biostimulation. The process is catalyzed by the action of rhizobacteria. Therefore, the objective of this study is to characterize rhizobacteria communities prevalent in phytoremediation species growing in hydrocarbon-contaminated soils biostimulated with cattle manure. The treatments studied were plant species only (T1), plant species and hydrocarbons (T2), plant species and manure (T3), and plant species, manure, and hydrocarbons (T4). The rhizobacteria communities were determined using pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA. It is important to evaluate their biocompatibility prior to use, owing to their long-term use in patients. This in vitro study compared the cytotoxicity and chemical composition of six latest orthodontic wires Fantasia®, Tanzo®, FLI®, NT3®, DuoForce®, and Gummetal®. The before-use group consisted of wires that were not used in the mouth, and the after-use group consisted of wires that were used in the mouth for two months. The wires were placed in contact with human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) for 72 h, and cytotoxicity was determined using the resazurin test. The chemical composition and surface characterisation were evaluated by spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy. The groups were compared using ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test. Only the FLI® wires produced a 36% reduction in HGF viability (p less then 0.05) and presented greater irregularities and loss of polymer structure. After-use wires showed a significant reduction in the percentage of nickel and the appearance of new elements (oxygen and carbon). Therefore, it can be concluded that no toxic ion release was noticed in this study. Rhodium-coated wires were more stable than PTFE-coated wires, and only the FLI® wires showed a slight cytotoxic effect.Proteinuria is an important prognostic marker in the diagnosis and management of kidney diseases. Sulfosalicylic acid method (SSA) is a simple, low cost, qualitative test, widely used to assess proteinuria. The aim of this study was to optimize SSA test as a quantitative screening tool to assess proteinuria at lower excretory levels which would facilitate the screening and early diagnosis of renal impairment using protein-to-creatinine ratio (PCR). The study was conducted in two phases. In phase I, optimum SSA percentage to detect low-grade proteinuria was selected by comparing the performance of 3%, 6%, and 25% SSA methods in manual spectrophotometric analysis. In phase II, clinical applicability of the optimized method was evaluated using retained urine samples of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) assessed for urine protein by the pyrogallol red (PGR) method in a tertiary care hospital in Sri Lanka. Optimized 25% SSA protein-to-creatinine ratio (PCR) was compared with PGR PCR and albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR). Sensitivity, specificity, degree of agreement, correlation, and diagnostic accuracy were evaluated. Turbidimetric analysis using 25% SSA was linear in the range 3-50 mg/dL giving the highest analytical sensitivity. The test yielded a sensitivity of 86.5% and specificity of 96.5% and a degree of agreement of 5 mg/dL with the PGR method. Optimal cut-off for 25% SSA PCR in receiver operating characteristic analysis was 166 mg/g. Spearman's correlation coefficient for 25% SSA PCR versus ACR was r = 0.823, p less then 0.0001, and for 25% SSA PCR versus PGR PCR was r = 0.913, p less then 0.0001. The 25% SSA test is a simple method, and it performs satisfactorily as a screening test with a cut-off for PCR optimized at 166 mg/g. The test merits further evaluation due to its low cost.
