Introduction This review aims to synthesise the studies on smoking-attributable burden of diseases in China to assess the economic burden of smoking and highlight the weakness in these studies to inform future studies. Methods A systematic search of studies on smoking-attributable burden of disease in seven databases was conducted in 2019 and studies were screened according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The evaluation of studies was based on the seven key elements for burden of disease studies. Costs were converted into 2013 Renminbi (RMB), with 1000 RMB about 163 US$ in 2013, the year of the first search, using the Consumer Price Index and the then exchange rate. Results Twenty studies were identified that estimated the costs of smoking in China, ranging from 57.162 to 368.273 billion RMB in total. The largest proportion of direct costs was allocated to outpatient visits, accounting for 49.17-68.94% of the direct costs. Meanwhile, costs resulting from mortality constituted 64.52-98.82% of the indirect costs. In mainland China, the understanding of PAR% (ratio of population attributable risk and incidence in the total population) in studies is not consistent. Studies on the cost of passive smoking are lacking and the research method for diseases needs to be improved. Conclusions Smoking-attributable diseases have exerted substantial direct and indirect economic burden on China. The methodologies for future studies should be improved. Hong Kong and Taiwan provide good examples for future research in mainland China and researchers there should use PAR% correctly. More studies on the burden of passive smoking should be conducted. We propose a combination of single and all-disease research methods, if data are sufficient.Purpose Articular cartilage is known to be mechanically anisotropic. In this paper, the acoustic anisotropy of bovine articular cartilage and the effects of freeze-thaw cycling on acoustic anisotropy were investigated. Methods We developed apparatus and methods that use a magnetic L-shaped sample holder, which allowed minimal handling of a tissue, reduced the number of measurements compared to previous studies, and produced highly reproducible results. Results SOS was greater in the direction perpendicular to the articular surface compared to the direction parallel to the articular surface (N=17, P = 0.00001). Average SOS was 1,758 ± 107 m/s perpendicular to the surface, and 1,617 ± 55 m/s parallel to it. CL-14377 nmr The average percentage difference in SOS between the perpendicular and parallel directions was 8.2% (95% CI 5.4% to 11%). Freeze-thaw cycling did not have a significant effect on SOS (P>0.4). Conclusion Acoustic measurement of tissue properties is particularly attractive for work in our laboratory since it has the potential for nondestructive characterization of the properties of developing engineered cartilage. Our approach allowed us to observe acoustic anisotropy of articular cartilage rapidly and reproducibly. This property was not significantly affected by freeze-thawing of the tissue samples, making cryopreservation practical for these assays. In this paper, we report a fiber-optic pressure sensor fabricated by three-dimensional (3D) printing of glass using direct laser melting method. An all-glass fiber-housing structure is 3D printed on top of a fused silica substrate, which also serves as the pressure sensing diaphragm. And an optical fiber can be inserted inside the fiber housing structure and brought in close proximity to the diaphragm to form a Fabry-Perot interferometer. The theoretical analysis and experimental verification of the pressure sensing capability are presented.Aim This work is focused on the Monte Carlo microdosimetric calculations taking into account the influence of the AuNPs' shape, size and mass concentration on the radiation dose enhancement for the high-energy 6 MV and 18 MV X-ray therapeutic beams from a medical linac. Background Due to a high atomic number and the photoelectric effect, gold nanoparticles can significantly enhance doses of ionizing radiation. However, this enhancement depends upon several parameters, such as, inter alia, nanoparticles' shape etc. Method The simulated system was composed of the therapeutic beam, a water phantom with the target volume (with and without AuNPs) located at the depth of the maximum dose, i.e. at 1.5 cm for the 6 MV beam and at 3.5 cm for the 18 MV one. In the study the GEANT4 code was used because it makes it possible to get a very short step of simulation which is required in case of simulating the radiation interactions with nanostructures. Results The dependence between the dose increase and the mass concentration of gold was determined and described by a simple mathematical formula for three different shapes of gold nanoparticles - two nanorods of different sizes and a flat 2D structure. The dose increase with the saturation occurring with the increasing mass concentration of gold was observed. Conclusions It was found that relatively large cylindrical gold nanoparticles can limit the increase of the dose absorbed in the target volume much more than the large 2D gold nanostructure.Aim The aim of the study was an evaluation of daily functioning and activity in post-mastectomy women who use EBP, with particular focus on the weight of the prosthesis. Background There is a large group of breast cancer patients who need comprehensive care including professional help with EBP. Some researchers have reported the advantages and disadvantages of using EBPs in women who undergo mastectomy. Among the latter, dissatisfaction with the weight, comfort and movement of the prosthesis was identified. Materials and methods The study included 125 women who had undergone unilateral mastectomy. This was a survey with a self-constructed questionnaire which was administered to breast cancer women. In the second part, the author analyzed current objective studies about the implementation of EBP in body motion assessments. Results The analysis of the answers of the women studied showed that they used their first EBP about 6 months after mastectomy, and changed it every two years. The method of choosing EBP had a significant impact on satisfaction with EBP as well as on the prosthesis' weight.
