Licence categories describe the vehicles you are allowed to drive and the maximum authorised mass (MAM) of a vehicle or trailer. These codes are listed on the reverse side of the licence. They are usually written in lower case, though some licences use upper-case letters to differentiate the various categories. For instance category M is a moped licence that permits the driver to operate two-wheeled motorized vehicles with the engine's power being less than 50cc.
If you hold a category B driving licence (which includes cars) you are able to drive four-wheeled vehicles that weigh up to 400kg unladen or up to 550kg for goods. You can also attach an additional trailer up to 750kg.
A category B license isn't valid for driving a minibus. Instead, you must pass a category C test to drive larger vehicles. The category C license is not available to drivers who are less than 18. You may also pass the test to obtain a C1 category licence, which permits driving vehicles that weigh 11,000 kg or smaller trailers. This is a great option for those who want to drive a small van or pickup truck with a trailer.
If you don't belong to a licence category that permits you to drive a certain type of vehicle, you could be subject to heavy penalties and fines. The DVSA website warns you that you could be fined up to PS1,000 and earn three to six penalty points if caught driving an incorrectly licenced vehicle.
You can't tow vehicles without a b1 license
If you hold B1 license, you are only allowed to tow a trailer that weighs up to 750kg. This is because the weight of a trailer and vehicle combination can not exceed 3.5 tonnes. If you want to drive a trailer that is heavier than this, you'll need to get a category B + E licence. This is costly and requires a state-issued and practical examination.
If you hold B1 Auto license, you can tow only small vehicles with an automatic transmission, like small cars or vans. This licence does not allow you to drive a manual vehicle which is why if you want to tow a larger vehicle, you'll have to retake the driving test. Alternately, you can get a category BE licence which permits you to tow a vehicle with an authorized maximum mass (MAM) of 3,500kg on a trailer.
If your license is code 96, you can also tow a vehicle. This type of licence entitles you to drive a car with a MAM up 3500kg, and to tow a trailer up to 750kg. The trailer size depends on the date of the issue of your BE licence.
You can also tow a trailer that weighs up to 750kg when you have B1 licenses without code 96 or a BE. You can also tow a trailer that is specifically designed to carry a horse or boat. This type of trailer is known as a lorry-mounted trailer and is usually attached to the back of an lorry or tractor.
The first type of car driving license was the class 3 licence, which allowed the driver to drive with trailer. This licence was changed to the BE licence, which permits you to drive a trailer up to the maximum gross vehicle mass (GVM) weight of 7.5 tonnes.
The B license is a fantastic option for drivers who want to own their own vehicle but do not plan to make use of them for commercial purposes. The B license can be used for commercial or private vehicles up to nine seats. It also gives the driver to pull a trailer that weighs up to 775kg.
Vehicles that you can't tow with a B2 licence
The B1 licence is a specialized version of the category B driving license. It allows you to drive cars with up to 400kg (or 550kg if it's designed for transporting goods). This licence does not permit you to drive vans or trucks. However, it allows you to drive smaller commercial vehicles, such as cargo carriers, light trucks, and trailers. This license permits you to tow trailers up to a a maximum GVM of 3.5 tonnes.
You'll need a Category A+E license to drive heavy vehicles. This license is accompanied by a state and practical exam which can be expensive. Alternately, you can apply for Category B with code 96, which allows you to drive vehicles that have a GVW up to 3.5 tonnes. However, you aren't able to use a trailer with this licence if its GVM is greater than the vehicle's.
The categories on your licence help you understand what kind of vehicles you are able to drive. Certain categories on your licence will require you to pass additional tests or get qualifications to be able drive certain types vehicles. If you're unsure of what each category means, you can ask for a licence translation to help you understand the meanings.
A B2 licence enables you to drive small passenger vehicles with nine seats and an overall length of less than 6 meters. You can also tow a trailer of up to 750 kg. Other vehicles that you can drive with a B2 license include the C1 (small automatic transmission car), C3 (low-speed truck) and C4 (tricycle).
