Clinicians should be aware of increased BMI in these patients and the associated risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the future.The modified Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach (CASA) model based on the comprehensive and sequential classification system of grasslands (CSCS, a unique vegetation classification system) was used to determine grassland net primary production (NPP) in Gansu province from 1982 to 2011 and its spatio-temporal variability. The relationship between NPP and climate drivers was analyzed. The results showed that annual NPP of grasslands in Gansu province averaged 139.30 gC m-2 yr -1 during the study period. Neuronal Signaling agonist NPP decreased from southeast to northwest across the province. Grassland NPP showed an increasing trend during the period 1982-2011, and the increase rate over the whole period was 92.91%. The highest NPP appeared in summer with more precipitation and higher cumulative temperature conditions; while the lowest values existed in winter. The largest correlation coefficient was found between the average annual NPP and the average annual precipitation (r = 0.77), followed by annual NPP and solar radiation (r = 0.70) or NDVI (r = 0.69), Annual NPP had no significant correlation with annual cumulative temperature (>0°C) or moisture index (K-value). Thus, precipitation is the major controlling factor on the average annual NPP in Gansu grassland. Solar radiation and NDVI also have important effects on grassland NPP in Gansu. These results may provide basic information for sustainable development and utilization of grassland and for the improvement and protection of the ecological environment as well.
Effective handwashing can prevent the spread of germs, including Covid-19. However, young children can lack a fundamental understanding of germ transfer. A Germ's Journey educational resources were designed to support young children in learning about germs and handwashing. These resources include a book, website, song, online games and glo-gel activities that are informed by a behaviour change model.
Prior research has not evaluated the impacts of these resources on behavioural outcomes.
Two intervention studies evaluated the impacts of these resources on both knowledge and behavioural outcomes.
In Study 1, children (n = 225) were recruited from four schools and randomly assigned by classrooms to participate in a multicomponent intervention (vs. control). Here we asked how activation of Toll signaling in the larval fat body perturbs lipid homeostasis to understand how cells meet the metabolic demands of the immune response. We find that genetic or physiological activation of fat body Toll signaling leads to a tissue-autonomous reduction in triglyceride storage that is paralleled by decreased transcript levels of the DGAT homolog midway, which carries out the final step of triglyceride synthesis. In contrast, Kennedy pathway enzymes that synthesize membrane phospholipids are induced. Mass spectrometry analysis revealed elevated levels of major phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine species in fat bodies with active Toll signaling. The ER stress mediator Xbp1 contributed to the Toll-dependent induction of Kennedy pathway enzymes, which was blunted by deleting AMP genes, thereby reducing secretory demand elicited by Toll activation. Consistent with ER stress induction, ER volume is expanded in fat body cells with active Toll signaling, as determined by transmission electron microscopy. A major functional consequence of reduced Kennedy pathway induction is an impaired immune response to bacterial infection. Our results establish that Toll signaling induces a shift in anabolic lipid metabolism to favor phospholipid synthesis and ER expansion that may serve the immediate demand for AMP synthesis and secretion but with the long-term consequence of insufficient nutrient storage.Ectotherms may experience large body temperature (Tb) variations. Higher Tb have been reported to increase baroreflex sensitivity in ectotherm tetrapods. At lower Tb, pulse interval (PI) increases and diastolic pressure decays for longer, possibly resulting in lower end-diastolic pressures and mean arterial pressures (Pm). Additionally, compensatory baroreflex-related heart rate modulation (i.e. the cardiac branch of the baroreflex response) is delayed due to increased PI. Thus, low Tb is potentially detrimental, leading to cardiovascular malfunctioning. This raises the question on how Pm is regulated in such an adverse condition. We investigated the baroreflex compensations that enables tegu lizards, Salvator merianae, to maintain blood pressure homeostasis in a wide Tb range. Lizards had their femoral artery cannulated and pressure signals recorded at 15°C, 25°C and 35°C. We used the sequence method to analyse the heart rate baroreflex-related corrections to spontaneous pressure fluctuations at each temperature.
