Types of Hobs
A hob (known as stove top in North America) is a cooking appliance that heats pans with flame or electricity. There are many different types of hobs. You can pick the one that best fits your kitchen and style.
Induction hobs have flat cooking surfaces made of ceramic and include five or four zones to heat your pans. The modern touch-operated designs look elegant and chic and are easy to clean.
Ceramic hobs
Ceramic hobs offer an elegant and contemporary look that can really improve the overall look of your kitchen. The flat glass-ceramic surfaces are simple to clean and can easily be wiped down if spills or splatters occur. They also heat up quickly and are energy efficient which helps lower your electric bill. However, one drawback of ceramic hobs is that they tend to be slow to adjust temperatures which can be a problem when cooking something that requires immediate reduction or an increase in heat.
Electric hobs consist of a solid surface which is heated from below by electric elements. These elements can be individually controlled using rotary knobs and notched up to the level of power you require. You can use the Boost feature to increase the temperature of a certain zone. Ceramic hobs retain heat very well, so even when they've been shut off, they will be hot to the touch. This can be a challenge if you have children, so it's recommended to place them in a location that is well away from any flammable items and not within reach of young children.
This type of hob can be used on a variety of worktops such as laminate, solid hardwood and granite. It is also relatively affordable and is an excellent alternative if you're trying to replace your old hobs, but without spending a lot of money. As with all appliances, they need to be installed correctly and connected to the mains. We recommend hiring an electrician to ensure your new hobs will be safe to use.
The downside to this kind of hob is that it's extremely sensitive to the size of the pan as well as its shape. You'll need to buy cookware that matches the element exactly or fits comfortably in all of the heating zones. If the cookware is not the same dimensions as the element, it will not recognize it and won't heat the bottom of the pan. This could result in inconsistent results in cooking and makes the hob less efficient.
Gas on glass hobs
Gas on glass hobs offer an elegant, modern look. While they can cost more than electric models and require professional installation, they often take less time to heat up - it's not uncommon for a complete pan of water to come to a boil within four minutes or less. This kind of hob is ideal for cooks who wish to control the amount of heat that is generated. Glass hobs are more vulnerable to damage and require frequent cleaning as they tend to accumulate grease and residue.
This Bertazzoni hob is a fantastic example of gas on glass. It comes with four monobloc burners finished in matt black, with control knobs made of metal to create a sleek, elegant look. It also comes with an oblong wok ring with 4kW for additional versatility, as well as pan supports that are dishwasher-safe, making them easier to keep clean.
This Bosch gas hob is another highly recommended model. It combines a fashionable piece of toughened glass with advanced cooking technology. The dual ring design at the left of the gas hob features a double inner burner to increase heat distribution and increase the speed of cooking. It also features an easy-to-read power level indicator, which assists in regulating the exact temperature of the flame. You can choose from nine preset settings, including a high setting for searing steak and the low setting for scrambled eggs.
Its simple yet easy-to-use controls were also appreciated by our testers, who found them to be very simple to use. Some minor drawbacks are that you must press the controls a further nine times to reach the maximum heating level and that the glass can make it difficult to discern the burners' actions.
A few of the top gas-on-glass hobs are available for affordable prices, such as this Neff model. It's not going win any design prizes but it'll do the job and can be a great addition to your kitchen at just over 120 pounds.
Electric hobs
Electric hobs are perfect for modern homes. Not only do they have an elegant design that fits in with the rest of your kitchen as well, but they also offer advanced functions that are safer, more efficient and efficient in energy use than their predecessors.
One of the most sought-after electric hobs is a ceramic hob. They are designed with a sleek glazed finish, and feature an easy surface to clean and resistant to scratches. They're also typically equipped with a power boost feature which lets you increase the heat of your cooker for a short amount of time.
Induction hobs are a different electric hob that is perfect for modern homes. As opposed to traditional gas and electric plate hobs, induction hobs use electromagnetic fields to directly heat cookware. This means they are more energy efficient and offer precise temperature control. They require a specific kind of pan and can be costly to set up.
Hobs made of glass that are gas-powered are a different option for modern homes. It features a burner beneath an unidirectional glass layer similar to a standard gas stove. However, this glass is heatproof and shatterproof, so it's easier to clean than glass that is tempered. A lot of these hobs include a 'hot-surface indicator', which alerts you when the hob is heated.
Gas hobs are a popular choice for many home chefs, but they can be noisy and hard to clean. They also take a while to heat up and cool down and their flame can be hard to manage. Electric hobs on the other hand are more efficient in energy and easy to clean.
There are electric stoves that work with LPG gas. You can switch between a variety of fuels, giving you the flexibility needed to adapt to your lifestyle. It is important to remember that these hobs will require the installation of an accredited gas safe engineer and will require a separate cable of 6mm to be installed in your kitchen. They are also not suitable for people with pacemakers because the electromagnetic field could cause interference with them.
Hobs with induction
On the glass surface of the induction hobs, there are copper coils which run an electrical current that varies. When an induction-compatible plate is placed on the hob, the coils generate magnetic fields that directly heat the pan rather than heating a surface of the worktop or a heated plate. This makes induction hobs very efficient from an energy perspective, as there's no residual heat being wasted.
There are a myriad of models of induction hobs that range from basic ones with only one cooking zone that is marked with rings to more advanced multi-zoned hobs that can have up to six zones, allowing you to cook multiple pots at once on a flexible zone. Certain models have a touch slider control that is very similar to how you operate an iPhone. You can select the desired temperature by sliding your finger from left to right over the power bar located in the middle. Certain models can even be programmed with settings for specific recipes or food types that can help you save time and effort in the kitchen.
Induction hobs can be more expensive than ceramic hobs, however they are thought to be more efficient in the long run because they heat up quicker and use a smaller space to heat up, which can help you save on energy bills. They cool quicker and have a safer design without hot plates. This makes them a great choice for families with children or elderly residents. However, they do produce a magnetic force that could cause interference with certain medical devices such as pacemakers. It is therefore important to center the pans and avoid using smaller pans on larger burners.
Like all electric hobs , you'll have to clean your electric hob regularly, as food particles and other debris may build up over time. You can use a standard oven cleaning product or purchase a specialist one to keep your stove in good condition and shining for a longer time. Make sure you don't use scrubbers or scouring pads on your induction hob since they could scratch the surface.
