How to Replace Door Handles
Door handles are a crucial element of your home's decor. A new handle can bring your home's decor up-to-date.
As time passes, your knobs on your doors may begin to feel stiff or even break. These are indications that it's time to replace the knobs. This guide will help you pick the right replacement door handle for your home.
Door Knobs
The handles on your doors will enhance the appearance of your house and make it easier to open and shut them. They are available in a variety of finishes, colors, and styles to complement your decor. If yours is beginning to show signs of wear or requires an upgrade, you can replace them in a few simple steps.
The first thing you have to find is the shaft or spindle through the knob's attachment to the door. Some knobs have a small opening that you can access with a screwdriver for removal of the set screws that keep the handle in place. Some have a thin slot, or hole, that you can use to press an activated detent pin that is spring-activated using a flathead. When you press this pin it opens the latch mechanism and allows you to pull or push the knob.
Once you have access to the shaft or spindle, take the knob off of the door and replace it with the new one. Be sure to align it properly and check to ensure that the latch functions properly before tightening your new set screws.
After replacing the knob, put the rod that is attached to the latch over the door's hole. Interlock it with the rod system on the second knob. Make sure the holes are lined up, then thread in the screws on the latch plate and tighten the screws.
Some people opt for a smooth or brushed metal finish on their door hardware to give it modern, sleek design that is a perfect match for other furniture in their homes. Some people prefer a rustic style that is perfect for farmhouse-style rooms. If you have a member of your family with mobility issues, you may prefer the lever or rim lock that require less pressure to operate.
While aesthetics have traditionally been the most important factor in door handle design, other factors are being taken into consideration too. Accessibility and control of infections are two major issues that have led to the creation of innovative new handle designs including ones that can be operated with a person's forearm.
Latch
The latch that holds the door handle open can wear down over time. Switching out the old latch to accommodate the new handle is an easy DIY task and will make a significant difference in how your door opens and closes.
Depending on the type of handle you are using, the latch could be a separate piece or an integral part of the knob. In either case, you will follow the same steps to remove and replace. It's simple to remove the old latch, particularly in the case of a door handle with a "magic" button. This little pressure-slot, located on the side knob is the one you'll have to press to remove the latch of the handle.
If your handle doesn't have this magical button, the first step is to take off any cover plates that sit over the latch plate. These are usually rectangular or circular and can be removed using the help of a screwdriver. Some have slots where you can place your screwdriver, whereas others just snap off.
The next step is to remove the two machine screws holding the latch and the inner plate to the door handle. You will need to store these screws with a pointed tip in a safe place in order to reuse them later. Once these are off, you can take the latch plate and mechanism out of the door's hole and put it away.
You can now begin installing the new latch. Place the inside of the latch into the hole in the door and secure it with the hardware supplied. Make sure that the square pin on the interior of the latch faces the latching mechanism in the handle and is aligned with the other screw holes in the handle. Then push the exterior latch plate on and secure it with the screws supplied.
Strike Plate
It is typical to replace a door handle if it is loose or doesn't lock properly. This is often due to incorrectly aligned parts in the latching mechanism, such as an unbalanced strike plate that is too short or moved upwards or downwards on the doorjamb as time passes. This project allows you replace your old strikeplate with an extended one, which can provide greater security for your door and ensure it stays shut.
To determine if the issue is caused by the strike plate, apply some lipstick or similar marking material on the bolt that is used to latch. Close the door, and then try to latch it. If upvc door handle repairs is lower than the strike plate's hole, it indicates that the plate is too small and the door will not latch. If the mark is higher or below the strikeplate hole, the strikeplate may have been moved upwards or downwards on the doorjamb.
Depending on the door, you may be able to just install the new strike plate in the door over the old one with the screws included with it. But, you may have to drill holes first, and then chisel out some of the wood to make sure it's snugly fitted. If this is the case Be careful not to be too rough with the chiseling process or you'll damage the integrity of the doorjamb.
You could also try installing a new strike plate, which provides the lock with a more secure grip on the door and requires more force to open it. Typically it requires two long screws that secure the strike plate to the door frame. To accomplish this, you'll need to remove the current strike plate, then drill and chisel out the wood to create space for the new one.
This hard-to find strike plate is made from solid brass and has a heavy-duty thickness. It's made to be used on antique rim locks. This kit includes wood screws and machine screws, allowing you to pick the right hardware for your requirements. Be aware that wood screws have a pointed tip whereas machine screws are blunter.
