Fecal isovaleric, valeric, and hexanoic acids were significantly lower after ResistAid consumption. Malnutrition and vitamin deficiency are growing concerns in the clinical management of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This case report presents a boy with ASD who developed vitamin A deficiency during follow-up.
A 7-y-old boy had been diagnosed with ASD and developmental delay at age 18 mo. He developed convulsions associated with hypocalcemia and vitamin D deficiency at 3 y of age. Although vitamin D supplementation was continued, he was only able to eat rice, green tea, and fried potatoes from 3 y of age to age 7 y. He had started rubbing his eyes and had refused to open his eyes 9 mo before. An ophthalmologic examination showed bilateral corneal ulcers and right corneal perforation. Vitamin A was immediately supplemented with a nasogastric tube; however, his right eye was surgically enucleated against the persistent infection.
A search of the relevant literature from 1993 to 2020 identified 11 cases of patients with ASD (5-17 y of age) who developed vitamin A deficiency owing to malnutrition. Selleckchem WM-8014 Only 4 cases (36%) had a full recovery in visual acuity.

This study explores the effects of fecal microbiota from children with vitamin A (VA) deficiency on colonic mucosal barrier function.
The composition of gut microbes was identified in children with different VA levels, then feces from children with normal VA or VA deficiency was collected separately and transplanted into germ-free (GF) mice, respectively. Three weeks after transplantation, the colon morphology, colonic tight junction proteins, gut microbes, and metabolites were evaluated.
In children, Bifidobacterium and Bacteroides were positively correlated with VA levels. Colonization of VA deficiency fecal microbiota markedly impaired colonic development in GF mice, down-regulated colonic tight junction-related proteins occludin and claudin-1, and reduced immunoglobulin A secretion. Furthermore, fecal microbiota transplantation with different VA levels altered composition of gut microbes and bile acid metabolism pathways in GF mice.
These data suggest that fecal microbiota from children with VA deficiency attenuates colonic barrier function in GF mice, which may be achieved by changing the bile acid metabolic pathways.

Malnutrition negatively affects the quality of life, survival, and clinical outcome of patients with cancer. Home artificial nutrition (HAN) is an appropriate nutritional therapy to prevent death from cachexia and to improve quality of life, and it can be integrated into a home palliative care program. The choice to start home enteral nutrition (HEN) or home parenteral nutrition (HPN) is based on patient-specific indications and contraindications. The aim of this observational study was to analyze the changes that occurred in the criteria for choosing the access route to artificial nutrition during 30 y of activity of a nutritional service team (NST) in a palliative home care setting, as well as to compare indications, clinical nutritional outcomes, and complications between HEN and HPN.
The following parameters were analyzed and compared for HEN and HPN tumor site and metastases; nutritional status (body mass index, weight loss in the past 6 mo); basal energy expenditure and oral food intake; Karnofsky pcomparable between HEN and HPN. In patients who maintained food oral intake, supplemental parenteral nutrition improved weight, performance status, and survival better than other types of HAN.

Consensus was achieved, concluding that soy protein isolate formula is safe, affordable, and an alternative option for cow's milk-based formula for term infants.
