In Europe, freshwater fish are the richest group amongst European vertebrates and the second most threatened animal group, surpassed only by freshwater molluscs. The identification of threats is a major benefit for conservation efforts, as it allows actions to be bespoke to specific threats imperilling fish communities in sensitive areas. Tanespimycin order In this work, we analyse all threats identified under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species for all European native freshwater dependent fish and lamprey species and relate them with the species distribution, conservation status and migratory phenology. Results show that the current level of imperilment of European freshwater fish fauna is high, especially in the Iberian Peninsula fish communities where low richness is combined with a proportion of threatened species surpassing 50% in several catchments The most relevant threats affecting European freshwater fish are "Dams & Water Management/Use", "Droughts", "Invasive Non-Native/Alien Species/Diseases", "Agricultural & Forestry Effluents" and "Fishing & Harvesting Aquatic Resources". The present work contributes to the ultimate goal of species conservation by highlighting the main threats affecting freshwater fish species in Europe and by demonstrating how specific regions need particular attention. Increasing longitudinal connectivity stands out as a measure with the potential to increase species' resilience to the several threats affecting them, and it should be coupled with additional efforts to reduce water pollution, control alien species and effectively manage fishing.High molecular weight PAHs (HMW PAHs) are dangerous pollutants widely distributed in the environment. The use of microorganisms represents an important tool for HMW PAHs bioremediation, so, the understanding of their biochemical pathways facilitates the development of biodegradation strategies. For this reason, the potential role of species of microalgae, bacteria, and microalga-bacteria consortia in the degradation of HMW PAHs is discussed. The identification of their metabolites, mostly by GC-MS and LC-MS, allows a better approach to the enzymes involved in the key steps of the metabolic pathways of HMW PAHs biodegradation. So, this review intends to address the proteomic research on enzyme activities and their involvement in regulating essential biochemical functions that help bacteria and microalgae in the biodegradation processes of HMW PAHs. It is noteworthy that, given that to the best of our knowledge, this is the first review focused on the mass spectrometry identification of the HMW PAHs metabolites; whereby and due to the great concern of the presence of HMW PAHs in the environment, this material could help the urgency of developing new bioremediation methods. The elucidation of the metabolic pathways of persistent pollutant degrading microorganisms should lead to a better knowledge of the enzymes involved, which could contribute to a very ecological route to the control of environmental contamination in the future.Antibiotics, heavily used as medicine, enter the environment inevitably and raise concerns of the risk to the ecosystems. In this study, we explored the removal efficiency and mechanism of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and tetracycline (TC) in activated carbon (AC) and AC-zero-valent iron amended bioretention cells (AC-BRC and AC-Fe-BRC) compared with a conventional bioretention cell (BRC). Moreover, the system performance of BRCs, the shifts of the microbial community, as well as the fate of corresponding antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were comprehensively investigated. The results showed that, exposed to antibiotics notwithstanding, AC-BRC and AC-Fe-BRC significantly outperformed BRC on total nitrogen (TN) removal (BRC 70.36 ± 13.61%; AC-BRC 91.43 ± 6.41%; AC-Fe-BRC 83.44 ± 12.13%). Greater than 97% of the total phosphorous (TP) was removed in AC-Fe-BRC, remaining unimpacted despite of the selective pressure from SMX/TC. Excellent removals of antibiotics (above 99%) were achieved in AC-BRC and AC-Fe-BRC regardless of the types and initial concentrations (0.8 mg/L, 1.2 mg/L and 1.6 mg/L) of antibiotics, dwarfing the removal performance of BRC (12.2 ± 4.4%-64.2 ± 5.5%). The illumina high throughput sequencing analysis demonstrated the concomitant variations of microbial communities as SMX/TC was loaded. AC layers tended to alleviate the adverse effect of SMX/TC on microbial biodiversity. Proteobacteria (34.55-68.47%), Chloroflexi (7.13-33.54%), and Bacteroidetes (6.20-21.03%) were the top three dominant phyla in the anaerobic zone of the BRCs. The abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) sulI, sulII and tetA genes were dramatically higher in AC-BRC and AC-Fe-BRC when exposed to 0.8 mg/L SMX/TC, which indicated that relatively low concentrations of SMX/TC induced the production of these three ARGs in the presence of AC. Although the amendment of AC led to highly efficient SMX/TC removals, further investigation is still required to improve the retention of ARGs in BRCs.In this study, the abundance and the distribution of small microplastics ( less then 100 μm, SMPs) and of other components of micro-litter (i.e., additives, plasticizers, natural and non-plastic synthetic fibers, APFs) were investigated in sediments and seawater of three different sites of a transitional environment; different anthropogenic impacts and environmental features characterize these three sites. The pretreatment method developed (oleo-extraction and purification procedures) allowed the collection of particles (SMPs and APFs) in a wide range of densities, e.g., from low-density plastics to high-density plastics, avoiding further degradation/denaturation of polymers. An analytical method for quantification and simultaneous identification of SMPs and APFs via Micro-FTIR was developed. Higher abundances of SMPs were observed in sediments compared to the abundance observed in seawater. SMPs were not the major component of the micro-litter. With natural fibers and non-plastic fibers, additives and plasticizers were quantified and identified in sediments and seawater. These latter are employed to obtain specific characteristics of polymers; hence their presence can be a good proxy of these polymers' presence in the environment. Sources and pathways may influence the abundance and distribution of SMPs and APFs. Differences in abundance and distribution of these pollutants in sediments and seawater of the three sites investigated were statistically significant.
