For example, following adaptation to vertical red and horizontal green stripes in alternation, vertical black and white patterns appear greenish, while horizontal black and white patterns appear reddish. The striking aspect of the McCollough Effect is that just a few minutes of adaptation can produce an aftereffect lasting days or weeks. Though this effect is easily induced, previous work has shown that stronger effects can be achieved with longer periods of adaptation. To allow especially long adaptation durations, the current work develops a novel method of induction of the McCollough Effect using live video feed, filtered by orientation, and viewed with a head-mounted display. Results showed that this "McCollough World" paradigm was as strong an inducer (per unit time) as traditional paradigms using gratings, while allowing observers to adapt comfortably for multiple hours. Two hours of McCollough World adaptation produced effects that were significantly larger than 20 min of traditional adaptation, which is close to the tolerance limits for gratings. This work provides insight into the features necessary for induction of the McCollough Effect and provides a strategy for creating especially strong and long-lasting color aftereffects.Anomalous trichromacy is a form of color vision deficiency characterized by the presence of three cone types, but with shifted spectral sensitivities for L or M cones, causing a red-green color deficiency. However, long-term adaptation to this impoverished opponent input may allow for a more normal color experience at the suprathreshold level ("compensation"). Recent experimental evidence points to the presence of compensation in some tasks. The current study used threshold detection, suprathreshold contrast matching, and a reaction-time task to compare contrast coding in normal and anomalous observers along the cardinal cone-opponent axes. Compared to color normals, anomals required more L-M contrast, but not S contrast, to detect stimuli and to match an achromatic reference stimulus. find more Reaction times were measured for several contrast levels along the two cone-opponent axes. Anomals had higher overall reaction times, but their reaction-time versus contrast functions could be matched to those of controls simply by scaling contrast by the detection thresholds. Anomalous participants were impaired relative to controls for L-M stimuli in all three tasks. However, the contrast losses were three times greater for thresholds and reaction times than for suprathreshold matches. These data provide evidence for compensation in anomalous trichromats, but highlight the role that the experimental task plays in revealing it.
The EQ-5D-3L and EQ-5D-5L instruments have been used in studies of patient and demographic groups in Colombia, but to date there are no 5L population norms. This study aimed to produce a set of EQ-5D-5L population norms for Colombia and to see what insights into health inequality in Colombia can be discerned from these norms.
The EQ-5D-5L self-reported health questionnaire was included in a survey of a representative sample of 3400 adults aged 18 to 64 in Colombia. EQ-5D-5L states, mean EQ VAS, and index values were obtained by sex, age, education, income group, ethnicity, residence, employment status, health insurance status, and household size. EQ-5D-5L index values from Uruguay were used. Regression models were used to investigate inequality.
The mean EQ VAS value was 85.3, the mean index value was 0.953, and 52.2% of the sample reported being in state 11111. Self-reported health was higher for men, declined in higher age groups, and was lower for lower-income and education groups. The EQ-5D-5L instrument was observed to be more sensitive than the EQ-5D-3L instrument in Colombia. The dimensions with the highest prevalence of reported problems were anxiety/depression and pain/discomfort. The main drivers of inequality were age, sex, income, and education.
The population norms developed in this study can be used as baseline values for future studies of patient or treatment groups, and for investigations into the health of specific demographic groups.

This study provides a baseline of pathological and sub-pathological changes in the lower-limb bones of a semi-feral herd of domestic cattle. The purpose is to refine an existing method for identifying the use of cattle for traction using zooarchaeological evidence.
A published recording system for identifying draught cattle was applied to a sample of 15 individuals from Chillingham Park, Northumberland. Correlations were explored between individual pathological index values, the scores obtained for individual pathological/sub-pathological changes, and three biological variables age, sex and body size.
Pathological index values in the Chillingham cattle were low. Positive correlations between individual pathological index values and age, sex and body size were identified. Broadening of the distal metacarpal, proximal and distal exostoses in the metatarsal, distal exostoses of the proximal phalanx, and proximal lipping and exostoses of the distal phalanx, were strongly correlated with age.
Pathological index scores demonstrate that adaptive remodeling of the autopodia is low in a free-ranging population of cattle, supporting the view that more pronounced changes provide useful identifiers of traction use. Application of modified pathological index formulae to nine archaeological sites from England indicated that cattle were only intensively used for traction in the Roman and later medieval periods.
This study refines the methods used to identify traction in the archaeological record through the consideration of cows and a wider range of ages than has been considered previously.
Only 15 individuals from the Chillingham herd were available for analysis.
The refined formulae should be applied to additional archaeological datasets from different regions and time periods to explore the changing exploitation of cattle for traction.
