I, body weight, body weight change, milk fat, and protein content were important variables to predict hyperketonemia, but their rank of importance differed across lactation weeks. To evaluate the perceptual interactions among key aroma compounds found in milk fan, propanoic acid, butanoic acid, octanoic acid, octanal, nonanal, 2-nonanone, and ethyl hexanoate were analyzed by threshold values, aroma addition experiments (subthreshold), Feller's additive model (threshold), and σ-τ diagrams (threshold and superthreshold) at various concentrations. Aroma addition experiments highlighted that 7 key aroma compounds had significant effects on the aroma intensity of the sensory attributes of milk fan at the concentrations measured in a milk fan sample, and they might have synergistic effects with other compounds. The components of the 7 aroma compounds in binary mixtures showed synergistic effects from 21 binary mixtures by Feller's additive model. The components of 9 mixtures showed synergistic effects in the superadditive region (σ > 1.05), and 3 mixtures showed additive effects in the additive region (0.95 less then σ less then 1.05) of the σ-τ diagrams for all 168 binary mixtures. The results showed that perceptual interactions among the key aroma compounds in milk fan vary with different concentrations and threshold ratios. These results are helpful for further understanding the aroma of milk fan and improving the quality of its aroma.Lactoferrin (LF), a sialylated iron-binding glycoprotein, has numerous vital physiological functions including immunomodulation and protection against a large group of microorganisms, improving neurodevelopment, health, growth performance, and milk production. Lactoferrin occurs in human milk at a higher concentration compared with bovine milk, but little information is available on LF concentrations in porcine milk and the effects of sow parity on milk LF concentration. The objective of this study was to quantify the LF concentration in porcine milk and to compare that concentration between gilts and sows during lactation. SKF96365 We also investigated the effect of genetic background and litter size of the female pig on the LF concentration of porcine milk. The milk from 30 gilts and 35 sows was collected at 3 stages of lactation, namely colostrum, transition, and mature milk. Standard and experimental samples were analyzed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography using a diode array UV detector. The following findings were reported (1) porcine milk contained significant levels of LF with the highest concentration in colostrum, which decreased by ∼62% and ∼67% in transitional and mature milk, respectively; (2) mature gilt milk contained a 22% higher concentration of LF compared with sow milk, which was statistically significant; (3) breed line had an overall significant effect on the LF content of porcine milk; however, when the breed was considered, no significant difference was observed; and (4) LF concentration of porcine milk was not significantly influenced by the litter size. The presence of LF in a higher concentration in porcine milk suggests that LF is an important constituent of pig milk that might contribute to the optimum growth and development of piglets.Acidogenic prepartum diets with negative dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) induce compensated metabolic acidosis, which stimulates calcium (Ca) mobilization before calving and decreases clinical and subclinical hypocalcemia postpartum. This strategy is often combined with limiting dietary Ca concentrations, which historically has been used to mobilize Ca prepartum to prepare cows for lactation. Supplemental dietary Ca in combination with a negative DCAD formulation that does not reverse the effect of compensated metabolic acidosis may be beneficial. Our objective was to determine the effects of prepartum dietary strategies on dry matter intake (DMI), milk production, peripartal Ca status, and health during the transition period in multiparous Holstein cows (n = 81). Treatments during the last 28 d before calving were (1) positive DCAD diet, +6 mEq/100 g of DM, target urine pH >7.5, low dietary Ca (0.40% DM; CON); (2) negative DCAD diet, -24 mEq/100 g of DM, target urine pH 5.5 to 6.0, low dietary Ca (0.4cows fed ND or NDCA was greater than subclinical hypocalcemia thresholds for both ionized Ca and total Ca. No milk production differences were detected. Cows fed CON had an elevated adverse health score (calculated by assigning numerical values to recorded health events) and tended to have an elevated somatic cell count during the fresh period compared with cows fed ND or NDCA. Overall, an acidogenic diet prepartum without or with high Ca improved postpartum Ca status and health. Supplementation of additional Ca to the acidogenic diet had little effect.Agriculture is the largest source of ammonia (NH3) emissions. As NH3 is an indirect greenhouse gas, NH3 measurements are crucial to improving greenhouse gas emission inventory estimates. Moreover, NH3 emissions have wider implications for environmental and human health. Only a few studies have measured NH3 emissions from pastures in the tropics and subtropics and none has compared emissions to inventory estimates. The objectives of this study were to (1) measure NH3 emissions from dairy pastures in tropical and subtropical regions; (2) calculate NH3 emissions factors (EF) for each campaign; and (3) compare measured EF with those based on the 2006 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Tier 1, 2019 Refinement to the 2006 IPCC Tier 1, and the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme/European Environmental Agency (EMPE/EEA) Tier 2 inventory estimates. Pasture NH3 emissions were measured on 3 dairy farms in Costa Rica. On each dairy, NH3 emissions were measured twice during the wet season and once d ± 95% CI), respectively]. This suggests an overestimation of EF from excreta deposited on pasture and slurry applications in tropical and subtropical regions by IPCC methodologies. Furthermore, rainfall, which is not included as a parameter in the current EMEP/EEA Tier 2 methodology, appeared to reduce NH3 emissions, suggesting that accounting for this in the inventory methodologies could improve inventory estimates.
