To translate the Self-Efficacy for Personal Recovery Scale (SEPRS) into Arabic and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Arabic version.

An established translation methodology was employed, involving back-translation, comparison, forward-translation, comparison, and piloting. The pre-final version of the Arabic translated scale was tested for clarity with young people with a primary diagnosis of mental health problem. The final Arabic version and standardized measures of hope and loneliness were administered to 119 young people in two rounds.

Internal consistency was adequate (Cronbach's alpha = 0.87 in round 1, 0.91 in round 2). Consistent with the English version, a one-factor solution best fitted the data. The correlation between SEPRS and hope was
= 0.60 (round 1) and
= 0.61 (round 2), indicating convergent validity. The correlation between SEPRS and loneliness was
= -0.52 (round 1) and
= -0.60 (round 2). Correlation between test and retest was
= -0.998 indicated adequate test-retest reliability. Minimal floor and ceiling effects were detected.

The use of the Arabic SEPRS with Arabic-speaking samples is supported. Further research to investigate divergent validity is warranted.

I employ the device of "communitas in crisis" to emphasize the precarious nature of this experience and the extent to which, for myself at least, informal social interactions with fellow patients and "communitas" were significant features of my hospital experience and subsequent discharge. I suggest that a lack of emphasis on inpatient to inpatient relationships in the recovery literature is an omission and a reflection of psychiatry's authority struggles with both service users and professionals, along with a general perception of psychosis as individual rather than as a socially constructed phenomenon. Electroglottography signal is a bio signal which represents the impedance that exist between the glottis regions. The study aims at design and development of an hardware circuit for the acquisition of Electroglottogram signal from normal and thyroid subjects is proposed followed by feature extraction from the acquired bio signal is performed. Further, machine learning classifiers were used to classify the normal and thyroid individuals. This modality of acquisition is non-invasive. Performance evaluation is done by testing various classifiers to study the accuracy. The classifiers tested were Random Forest, Random Tree, Bayes Net, Multilayer Perceptron, Simple Logistic classifier, and One-R classifier. Classifiers such as Random Forest, Random Tree, and Multilayer Perceptron showed high accuracy. The accuracy estimated by these classifiers was tested and its ROC curves with AUC scores were derived. The highest accuracy was reported for Simple Logistic classifier which was about 95.1%. Random Forest and Random Tree reported 93.5% and 91.9% respectively. Similarly, Multilayer Perceptron and Bayes Net gave 93.5% and 91.9%. The One-R classifier algorithm reported the lowest accuracy of 90.3% among the studied classifier algorithms. The ROC-AUC score for the classifiers were also reported to be more than 0.9 which is considered more promising and supports the acquisition and processing methodology. Preoperative cardiac evaluation, including transthoracic echocardiography, may improve risk stratification and optimise perioperative outcomes in patients having non-cardiac surgery.This study aimed to investigate the frequency, indications, appropriateness and consequences of preoperative transthoracic echocardiography in elective joint arthroplasty patients. A one-year retrospective audit was conducted for patients who had elective joint arthroplasties performed at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne. Patient demographics, transthoracic echocardiography indication, time between transthoracic echocardiography being ordered, performed and its impact on date of surgery were obtained via database and manual chart review. Appropriateness of transthoracic echocardiography was determined in accordance with international guidelines. This study analysed 609 elective joint arthroplasties. Of these, 116 (19%) already had a recent transthoracic echocardiography. Of the remaining 493 patients, 192 (39%) received a resting transthoracic echocardiography.
