4 ± 1.8 μmol/L) than in the SR group (4.2 ± 1.7 μmol/L) and the control group (4.0 ± 2.0 μmol/L, P = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS RYGB induces a higher REE level in diabetic rats. The circulating bile acid level was enhanced after surgery.PURPOSE We aimed to investigate the toxicity of 6 fixed-combination drugs for glaucoma therapy using human corneal epithelial sheets (HCES). STUDY DESIGN Experimental. MATERIALS AND METHODS We used 6 kinds of commercially available fixed-combination drugs latanoprost/carteolol (LAT/CAR), latanoprost/timolol (LAT/TIM), tafluprost/timolol (TAF/TIM), travoprost/timolol (TRA/TIM), brinzolamide/timolol (BRZ/TIM), and dorzolamide/timolol (DRZ/TIM) including different preservatives. The cell viability and barrier function of the HCES after exposure to the eye drops for 10 or 30 minutes were assessed using the WST-1 assay and transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) measurements, respectively. The HCES were also evaluated using hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining and transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS The cell viability significantly decreased in the HCES treated with LAT/TIM or DRZ/TIM after 10 and 30 minutes and in those treated with BRZ/TIM after 30 minutes. The barrier function increased significantly in the HCES treated with LAT/CAR. Histologically, the HCES were damaged after treatment with LAT/TIM, BRZ/TIM, or DRZ/TIM for 30 minutes. Transmission electron microscopy indicated narrow intercellular spaces and multiple intercellular junctions in the HCES treated with LAT/CAR, TAF/TIM, or TRA/TIM. The HCES treated with DRZ/TIM, BRZ/TIM, or LAT/TIM contained cytoplasmic vacuoles and collapsed cellular structures. CONCLUSION Glaucoma fixed-combination eye drops demonstrated a different toxic effect on the cell viability, barrier function, and morphologic changes of HCES.PURPOSE As an adjunct to mammography, ultrasound can improve the detection of breast cancer in women with dense breasts. selleck inhibitor We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of automated breast ultrasound system (ABUS) and handheld ultrasound (HHUS) in Chinese women with dense breasts, both in combination with mammography and separately. METHODS This is a cross-sectional multicenter clinical research study. Nine hundred and thirty-seven women with dense breasts underwent ABUS, HHUS, and mammography at one of five tertiary-care hospitals. The diagnostic performance of ABUS and HHUS was evaluated in combination with mammography, or separately in women with mammography-negative dense breasts. The agreement between ABUS and HHUS in breast cancer detection was also assessed. RESULTS The sensitivity of the combination of ABUS or HHUS with mammography was 99.1% (219/221), and the specificities were 86.9% (622/716) and 84.9% (608/716), respectively. The area under the curve was 0.93 for ABUS combined with mammography and 0.92 for that of HHUS combined with mammography. Statistically significant agreement between ABUS and HHUS in breast cancer detection was observed (percent agreement = 0.94, κ = 0.85). The incremental cancer detection rate in mammography-negative dense breasts was 42.8 per 1000 ultrasound examinations. CONCLUSIONS Both ABUS and HHUS as adjuncts to mammography can significantly improve the breast cancer detection rate in women with dense breasts, and there is a strong correlation between them. Given the high prevalence of dense breasts and the multiple advantages of ABUS over HHUS, such as less operator dependence and reproducibility, ABUS showed great potential for use in breast cancer early detection, especially in resource-limited areas. The international maritime organization (IMO) has introduced several legislations to optimize the use of energy generated from machinery onboard ships to reduce the emitted exhaust gas emissions. The aim of the current paper is to study the effect of using emission reduction strategies for container ships with emphasis on the improved Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) from environmental and economic points of view. As a case study, A19 and A7 class container ships are investigated. Three different options are considered including natural gas, treatment equipment, and ship speed reduction. The lowest annual emission rates per transported cargo are achieved by A19. These rates are 18.9, 0.93, and 1.8 kg/TEU for NOx, SOx, and CO2 emissions, respectively. In order to improve the EEDI value for the A7, the ship speed should be reduced by 22.5%. This will comply with the three phases of IMO requirements by reducing CO2 emissions with cost-effectiveness of 52.54 $/ton CO2. On the other hand, using the installed dual-fuel engine infrastructure onboard A19 container ship will improve the energy efficiency by 10.13% with annual fuel saving of 23.73 million dollars.Trait impulsivity is an established risk factor for externalizing behavior problems in adolescence, but little is understood about the cognitive mechanisms involved. Negative automatic thoughts are associated with externalizing behaviors and impulsivity is associated with less cognitive reappraisal. This study sought to adapt the bioSocial Cognitive Theory (bSCT) of impulsivity and substance use (an externalizing behavior) for externalizing behavior in general. It was predicted that only the component of impulsivity characterized by lack of forethought (rash impulsiveness; RI) would be associated with (non-substance use-related) externalizing behaviors, not reward sensitivity/drive. Further, this association would be mediated by negative automatic thoughts. Participants were 404 (226 female, 63%) adolescents from 6 high schools across South-East Queensland (age = 13-17 years, mean age = 14.97 years, SD = 0.65 years) of mostly Australian/New Zealand (76%) or European (11%) descent. Participants completed self-report measures of impulsivity, negative automatic thoughts, and externalizing behaviors. Path analysis revealed that, as predicted, only RI was uniquely associated with negative automatic thoughts and externalizing behaviors. However, only negative automatic thoughts centered around hostility mediated the positive association between RI and externalizing behaviors, with the indirect mediation effect being smaller than the direct association. In contrast to substance use, only one component of impulsivity, RI, was associated with general adolescent externalizing behavior. Hostile automatic thoughts may be an important mechanism of risk, supporting a role for cognitive-behavioral interventions. Other biopsychosocial mechanisms are clearly involved and the bSCT may provide a useful framework to guide future research.
