Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a complicated disease caused by the interaction between genetic and environmental factors that affect mucosal homeostasis and triggers inappropriate immune response. The purpose of the study was to identify significant biomarkers with potential therapeutic targets and the underlying mechanisms.

The gene expression profiles of GSE48958, GSE73661, and GSE59071 are from the GEO database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened by the GEO2R tool. Next, the Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery (DAVID) was applied to analyze gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway. The content analysis sought to identify how Big Data and Big Data Analytics can help fighting epidemics and pandemics. The types and sources of data used in cases of previous epidemics and pandemics were identified, as well as techniques for treating these data. The results showed that the main sources of data come from social media and Internet search engines. The most common techniques for analyzing these data involve the use of statistics, such as correlation and regression, combined with other techniques. This article firstly elucidates the medical significance of coronaviruses in general. Then angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as the binding site of SARS-CoV‑2 and the possible influence on disease susceptibility are explained. The gold standard for detection of an active SARS-CoV‑2 infection is the direct detection of the pathogen with nucleic acid amplification techniques. At the onset of symptoms a swab of the upper airway is especially suitable due to the high viral load. At a later stage direct detection can be achieved in samples from the lower airway or in stool and anal swabs. Antibody tests cannot replace the direct detection of the pathogen; however, the detection of immunoglobulin G antibodies is of special interest for epidemiological questions (seroconversion time of sometimes several weeks).
