Both assays are highly specific.Galaxies are the basic structural element of the universe; galaxy formation theory seeks to explain how these structures came to be. I trace some of the foundational ideas in galaxy formation, with emphasis on the need for non-baryonic cold dark matter. Many elements of early theory did not survive contact with observations of low surface brightness galaxies, leading to the need for auxiliary hypotheses like feedback. The failure points often trace to the surprising predictive successes of an alternative to dark matter, the Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). While dark matter models are flexible in accommodating observations, they do not provide the predictive capacity of MOND. If the universe is made of cold dark matter, why does MOND get any predictions right?The history of modern economics abounds with pleas for more pluralism as well as pleas for more unification. These seem to be contradictory goals, suggesting that pluralism and unification are mutually exclusive, or at least that they involve trade-offs with more of one necessarily being traded off against less of the other. This paper will use the example of Paul Samuelson's Foundations of Economic Analysis (1947) to argue that the relationship between pluralism and unification is often more complex than this simple dichotomy suggests. In particular, Samuelson's Foundations is invariably presented as a key text in the unification of modern economics during the middle of the twentieth century; and in many ways that is entirely correct. But Samuelson's unification was not at the theoretical (causal and explanatory) level, but rather at the purely mathematical derivational level. Although this fact is recognized in the literature on Samuelson, what seems to be less recognized is that for Samuelson, much of the motivation for this unification was pluralist in spirit not to narrow scientific economics into one single theory, but rather to allow for more than one theory to co-exist under a single unified derivational technique. This hidden pluralism will be discussed in detail. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for more recent developments in economics.Lasiodiplodia theobromae is a dematiaceous non-dermatophyte mold (NDM), rarely reported to cause onychomycosis. Here, we report three cases of toenail onychomycosis caused by L. theobromae in agricultural workers. Two patients presented with total dystrophic onychomycosis and one with distal and lateral subungual onychomycosis. These cases have unique importance that besides traumatized nail infection, its rarity has adversely affected the agricultural workers livelihood as L. theobromae sporulates poorly, resistant to commonly used antifungal therapy. From the literature search, we assume that this is the first case series of onychomycosis caused by L. theobromae from a tropical country like India.
Actinomycosis is a rare indolent infectious disease with nonspecific clinical presentations that delay diagnosis. Although actinomycosis is thought to be more prevalent in developing countries, data from developing countries are scarce. This study aimed to profile actinomycosis in developing countries and identify how it differed from profiles of developed countries.
Patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria for actinomycosis from Nanfang Hospital in southern China between January 1999 and December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Thirty‑one patients were included in this study. The disease was diagnosed predominately in the orocervicofacial (n=14), cardiothoracic (n=11), abdominopelvic (n=5), and soft tissue (n=1) regions. Diagnosis was obtained by either histopathology (n=29, 94%) or microbiology (n=2, 6%). Only one-third of patients presented with generales. Hence, clinicians should be aware of this disease in patients with high risk factors. In the future, specific molecular methods may help to improve early diagnosis and treatment.In recent decades, fungal infections have been increasing, as well as the indiscriminate use of large-scale antifungal. The objective of the present study was to characterize the chemical components of L. montevidensis leaf essential oil (EOLm) and evaluate its antifungal potential and fluconazole modulating activity against Candida strains. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and its chemical components were determined by Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry. The antifungal activity was determined by the microdilution method to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration. The modulatory activity of fluconazole by the oil (EOLm) was evaluated against the four Candida strains. Our results demonstrated a predominance of β-Caryophyllene (34.96%) and Germacrene D (25.49%), while (E)-Caryophyllene (0.08%) and δ-Cadinene (0.13%) were the minor constituents. For the antifungal activity, it was evidenced that the EOLm did not inhibit the growth of Candida albicans (CA LM 77 and CA INQS 40006) and Candida tropicalis (CT INCQS 40042 and CT LM 23), but, potentiated the effect of fluconazole in particular against C. tropicalis, although the FIC index indicates indifferent modulation for all strains tested. This study strongly suggests that administration of the fluconazole in combination with plant essential oils can provide a new opportunity to improve the outcome of the drug effect.In recent decades, we have come to understand in great detail the mechanisms that allow plants and herbivorous arthropods to withstand each other. Research into these interactions often focuses on specific life stages of plants and animals, often for pragmatic reasons. Yet it is well known that the lifecycles of plants and herbivores are accompanied by niche shifts that can change their interactions. The occurrence of changes in the defensive regulatory and metabolic networks of plants during their development as driver of plant-herbivore interactions is mainly inferred from behavioral patterns, but there is increasingly molecular-mechanistic data to support the causality. In particular, understanding the molecular-mechanistic signatures of ontogenetic niche shifts, and their genetic basis, may prove to be critical for the design of knowledge-based crop protection strategies.
