Taken together, these two studies show the importance of psychological processes such as identity and self-efficacy in understanding the specific ways in which science/engineering support programs lead to enhanced commitment to a career in STEM among white and underrepresented minority undergraduate students.Infants acquiring their native language are adept at discovering grammatical patterns. However, it remains unknown whether these learning abilities are limited to language, or available more generally for sequenced input. The current study is a conceptual replication of a prior language study, and was designed to ask whether infants can track phrase structure-like patterns from nonlinguistic auditory materials (sequences of computer alert sounds). One group of 12-month-olds was familiarized with an artificial grammar including predictive dependencies between sounds concatenated into strings, simulating the basic structure of phrases in natural languages. A second group of infants was familiarized with a grammar that lacked predictive dependencies. All infants were tested on the same set of familiar strings vs. novel (grammar-inconsistent) strings. Only infants exposed to the materials containing predictive dependencies showed successful discrimination between the test sentences, replicating the results from linguistic materials, and suggesting that predictive dependencies facilitate learning from nonlinguistic input.Genetic epidemiology requires an appropriate approach to measure genetic variation within the population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics and genotyping results of DNA extracted from 2 human DNA sources, selected for their rapid and noninvasive sampling, and the use of simple and standardized protocols that are essential for large-scale epidemiologic studies. Saliva and urine samples were collected at the same day from 20 subjects aged 9-10 yr. Genomic DNA was extracted using commercial kits. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation was done by assessing the yield, the purity, and integrity of the extracted DNA. As a proof-of-concept, genotyping was performed targeting CC16 A38G and uteroglobin-related protein 1 (UGRP1)-112G/A. Saliva was found to provide the highest yield and concentration of total DNA extracted. Salivary DNA showed higher purity and a significantly less degraded state compared to urinary DNA. Consequently, the salivary DNA gave better genotyping results than urinary DNA. Therefore, if the choice exists, saliva is the preferred noninvasive matrix for genotyping purposes in large-scale genetic epidemiologic studies. Only in particular cases using urine could nevertheless be considered useful, although specific limitations need to be taken into account. © Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities.Aim To analyse the possible relationship between the EQD2(α/β=3Gy) at 2 cm3 of the vagina and late toxicity in vaginal-cuff-brachytherapy (VBT) after external-beam-irradiation (EBRT) for postoperative endometrial carcinoma (EC). Materials and methods From 2014 to 2016, 62 postoperative EC patients were treated with EBRT + VBT. The median EBRT dose was 45 Gy (44 Gy-50.4 Gy). VBT involved a single 7 Gy dose. Toxicity was prospectively evaluated using the RTOG score for the rectum and bladder and the objective LENT-SOMA criteria for the vagina. EQD2(α/β = 3Gy) at 2 cm3 of the most exposed part of the vagina was calculated by the sum of the EBRT + VBT dose. Statistics Boxplot, Student's t and Chi-square tests and ROC curves. Results Mean follow-up 39.2 months (15-68). Late toxicity bladder0 patient; rectum2 patients-G1; Vagina 26 patients-17G1, 9G2; median EQD2(α/β=3Gy) at 2 cm3 in G0-G1 patients was 70.4 Gy(SD2.36), being 72.5 Gy(SD2.94) for G2p. The boxplot suggested a cut-point identifying the absence of G2 100 % of G2p received >68 Gy, ROC curves showed an area under the curve of 0.72 (sensitivity of 1 and specificity of 0.15). Conclusions Doses >68 Gy EQD2(α/β=3Gy) at 2 cm3 to the most exposed area of the vagina were associated with late G2 vaginal toxicity in postoperative EC patients treated with EBRT + VBT suggesting a very good dose limit to eliminate the risk of G2 late toxicity. The specificity obtained indicates the need for prospective analyses. © 2020 Greater Poland Cancer Centre. see more Published by Elsevier B.V. The reported clinical advantages of SBRT include high pain and local control rates, high response rates against bone metastasis from radio-resistant tumors, and safe re-irradiations. Although most reports in the literature use local control as the primary treatment endpoint, this endpoint is not appropriate because local control does not relate directly to patient benefit. Herein, we proposed five pathophysiology-based patient groups, as well as appropriate endpoints for each group. © 2019 Greater Poland Cancer Centre. Published by Elsevier B.V. Background Several dose-escalation studies for localized prostate cancer (PCa) have shown advanced biochemical relapse-free (bRFS) rates and also better local control for higher total doses using either CFRT or SIB schedules. Besides the most important organs-at-risk, absorbed dose reduction of other surrounding normal tissues are also preferable. In order to analyse the normal tissue sparing, dosimetric parameters of different normal tissue volumes were examined. Materials and methods Treatment plans for 15 high risk prostate cancer patients were created using RapidArc (RA), Sliding Window (SW) IMRT and 4-field box (3D-CRT) technique. In order to evaluate normal tissue sparing, the volume of pelvic region was divided into six normal tissue cylinders with 1 cm wall thickness, located in each other. Results All plans met the criteria of target coverage (V95%>95%). All techniques provided the same results for OARs except 3D-CRT for rectum and bilateral femoral heads. The values of V5, V10 and V15 increased in cases which included RapidArc technique and decreased for V20 and V30. Conclusions The dosimetric parameters for the cylindrical normal tissue volumes show that using RapidArc technique gives equal or slightly better normal tissue sparing and SIB provided the same normal tissue sparing as CFRT planned with RapidArc. © 2019 Greater Poland Cancer Centre.
