To evaluate the heart rate variability in 2-min sequential segments with one minute overlap during and after the period of mild haemorrhage (450 ml) using blood donation as a model of acute blood loss.

47 male blood donors who had volunteered for blood donation were recruited for the study. Continuous lead II ECG was recorded before the start of the blood donation (5 min), during the period of the blood donation (~ 5-7 min) and after blood donation (5 min). The parasympathetic and sympathetic drive to heart was estimated by measures of heart rate variability in time and frequency domain.

A significant decrease in the parameters assessing parasympathetic drive i.e., normalised High frequency (HFn) and NN50 (Number of pairs of adjacent NN intervals differing by more than 50 ms) and pNN50 (NN50 divided by the total number of all NN Intervals) was observed during blood donation at 3-5 min, as compared to baseline. An increase in parameters associated with sympathetic drive i.e., normalised low frequency (LFn) was observed only in the post donation period at 2-3 min. A significant rise in LF/HF ratio which is a marker of sympatho vagal balance was observed at 4-5 min during blood donation when compared to baseline.

In this study, the insecticidal effect of Geobacillus thermodenitrificans PS41 secondary metabolites was tested against third instar larvae of Spodoptera litura, with mortality rate 60.26 ± 1.5% which might influence the agropest management. The test bacterial metabolites were subjected to GC-MS analysis. Totally, 17 different compounds were identified from the ethyl acetate extract metabolites of PS41 strain. The highest peak was obtained with behenic alcohol compound followed by 1-octadecene and penta erythrityl tetrachloride. The Geobacillus thermodenitrificans PS41 secondary metabolites showed potential antifungal activity against plant pathogenic fungi. The highest inhibit was attained against Cladosporium sp., (25 mm) followed by Rhizoctonia solani and Alternaria brassicola (23 mm). However, no toxic effect was exerted upon earthworm (Perionyx excavatus) when treated with PS41 bacterial metabolites. The potential PS41 strain was also found supporting the plant growth. In this study, a comprehensive investigation on spatial variations and potential sources of OCIs were conducted in riverine sediments from the Pearl River Delta (PRD), one of the most developed and urbanized areas in China. Of 12 OCIs, 7 were detected with the total concentrations ranging from 81.8 to 401.2 ng/g. When the results were compared with those of the water phase, OCIs in the riverine sediments exhibited relatively low concentrations, which was likely due to their low Kow, and they were not expected to be adsorbed onto sediments. The spatial variation of OCIs suggested that the discharge of sewage treatment plants (STPs) effluent could be a major source of OCIs in the PRD region. The total concentrations of OCIs had a significant positive correlation with total organic carbon (TOC) contents, suggesting that they have similar sources. This study strongly indicated that the high consumption of OCIs have led to their wide exposure in different environments in the PRD region and additional ecotoxicological data are needed to evaluate their potential risks in riverine sediments in the future.The aim of this paper is to investigate the associations of lead and cadmium exposure with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality among adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The prospective cohort study included participants with T2D (n = 7420 for blood lead; n = 5113 for blood cadmium) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III and NHANES 1999-2014. Death outcomes were ascertained through linkage with the National Death Index records. The geometric mean (interquartile range) concentrations of blood lead and cadmium were 19.6 (11.8, 35.0) μg/L and 0.39 (0.21, 0.60) μg/L, respectively. During 72,279 and 37,017 person-years of followup, 2818 all-cause deaths (including 832 CVD deaths) for blood lead and 1237 all-cause deaths (including 319 CVD deaths) for blood cadmium were documented, respectively. Comparing extreme quartiles, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of all-cause mortality were 1.51 (1.25, 1.82) for blood lead (Ptrend  less then  0.001) and 1.58 (1.22, 2.03) for blood cadmium (Ptrend  less then  0.001); and the HRs (95% CIs) of CVD mortality were 2.27 (1.54, 3.34) for blood lead (Ptrend  less then  0.001) and 1.78 (1.04, 3.03) for blood cadmium (Ptrend = 0.07). In the joint analysis, compared with participants in the lowest tertiles of blood lead and cadmium, participants in the highest tertiles had a HR (95% CI) of 2.09 (1.35, 3.24) for all-cause mortality. Exposure to lead and cadmium alone or in combination was significantly associated with higher risk of mortality among patients with T2D. These findings imply that minimizing exposure to lead and cadmium may aid in the prevention of premature death among individuals with diabetes.In the existing research, most of the heterogeneous catalysts applied in the activation of persulfate to degrade organic pollutants were synthesized from chemical reagents in the laboratory. In this paper, we have obtained a spent iron ore (IO) residue directly collecting from the iron ore plants, and efficiently activating peroxydisulfate (PS) to produce reactive free radicals. The experimental results demonstrated that the IO could effectively activate PS to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), with TCH removal rate reaching up to 85.6% within 2 h at room temperature. The TCH removal rate was increased with increasing iron ore dosage, while the more acidic pH condition would be favorable to TCH removal process. The material characterization results demonstrated that the dominant components of IO were Fe3O4 and FeOOH. The transformation from Fe(II) to Fe(III) at the surface IO was observed after TCH degradation. What's more, the quenching experiment and EPR detection results confirmed that the sulfate radical (SO4•-) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) would be acting as the main free radicals for TCH degradation. This study could not only explore a novel way to recycle the discarded iron ore, but also further expand its application in an effective activation of PS in an aqueous solution.Enhancing the uptake and enrichment of heavy metals in plants is one of the important means to strengthen phytoremediation. In the present study, citric acid (CA), tartaric acid (TA), and malic acid (MA) were applied to enhance phytoremediation by Bidens pilosa L. in Cd-contaminated soil. The results showed that by the addition of appropriate concentrations of CA, TA, and MA, the values of the bioconcentration factor increased by 77.98%, 78.33%, and 64.49%, respectively, the translocation factor values increased by 16.45%, 12.61%, and 5.73%, respectively, and the values of the phytoextraction rates increased by 169.21%, 71.28%, and 63.11%, respectively. The minimum fluorescence values of leaves decreased by 31.62%, 0.28%, and 17.95%, while the potential efficiency of the PSII values of leaves increased 117.87%, 2.25%, and 13.18%, respectively, when CA, TA, and MA with suitable concentration were added. Redundancy analysis showed that CA and MA in plants were significantly positively correlated with plant growth, photosynthesis, and other indicators, whereas TA showed a negative correlation with most indicators. Moreover, CA addition could significantly increase the abundances of Azotobacter, Pseudomonas, and other growth-promoting bacteria, and the abundance values of Actinophytocola and Ensifer were improved in TA treatments. Therefore, our results demonstrated that low-molecular-weight organic acids could enhance phytoremediation, and exogenous CA could significantly improve the phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soil by Bidens pilosa L.Phosphate-solubilizing fungi (PSF) can enhance P release from phosphate minerals to immobilize heavy metals. However, this promotion substantially depends on their survival in highly polluted soils. The aim of this study was to investigate the survival of PSF after addition of phosphogypsum (PG) and bioorganic fertilizer (BF) in the soil with coexistence of multiple heavy metals, e.g., Pb, As, Cd, Sb, etc. Addition of typical PSF (Aspergillus niger) did not promote the formation of pyromorphite (the most stable form of Pb), possibly due to the buffering effect of the soil (the secreted oxalic acid was neutralized) and limited P supply. Meanwhile, despite that A. niger has high tolerance to heavy metal stress, its survival was significantly declined due to the deficiency of available P. It was also shown that PG, as the major by-product in phoschemical industry, still has relatively high available P compared with common natural soils. PG addition dramatically increased available P (up to 93.87 mg/kg) and the subsequent fungal growth.
