Spinal Cord injury (SCI) is a kind of severe traumatic disease. The inflammatory response is a significant feature after SCI. Caerulein in vivo Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), a perennial herb of umbelliferae, is an alkaloid extracted from ligustici. TMP can inhibit the production of nitric oxide and reduce the inflammatory response in peripheral tissues. It can be seen that the therapeutic effect of TMP on SCI is worthy of affirmation. TMP has defects such as short half-life and poor water-solubility. In addition, the commonly used dosage forms of TMP include tablets, dropping pills, injections, etc., and its tissue and organ targeting is still a difficult problem to solve. To improve the solubility and targeting of TMP, here, we developed a nanotechnology-based drug delivery system, TMP-loaded nanoparticles modified with HIV trans-activator of transcription (TAT-TMP-NPs).
The nanoparticles prepared in this study has integrated structure. The hemolysis rate of each group is less than 5%, indicating that the target drug delivery system has good safety. The results of in vivo pharmacokinetic studies show that TAT-TMP-NPs improves the bioavailability of TMP. The quantitative results of drug distribution in vivo show that TAT-TMP-NPs is more distributed in spinal cord tissue and had higher tissue targeting ability compared with other treatment groups.
The target drug delivery system can overcome the defect of low solubility of TMP, achieve the targeting ability, and show the further clinical application prospect.

The Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination of the United States Level 1 (COMLEX 1) is important for medical students to be able to graduate. There is a glaring need to identify students who are at a significant risk of performing poorly on COMLEX 1 as early as possible so that extra assistance can be provided to those students. Our goal is to produce a reliable predictive model to identify students who are at risk of scoring lower than 500 on COMLEX 1 at the earliest possible time.
Academic data from medical students who matriculated at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine between 2011 and 2017 were obtained. Odds ratios were used to assess the predictors for scoring lower than 500 on COMLEX 1. Correlation with COMLEX 1 scores was assessed with Pearson correlation coefficient. The predictive models were developed by multiple logistic regression, backward logistic regression, and logistic regression with average scores in courses in the first three semesters, and were basse students will have enough time to receive assistance before taking COMLEX 1.
Lower MCAT scores and lower grades in the first three semesters of medical school predict scoring lower than 500 on COMLEX 1. Students who are identified at risk by our models will have a 65.8 -71% chance of actually scoring lower than 500 on COMLEX 1. Those students will have enough time to receive assistance before taking COMLEX 1.
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has spread throughout more than 160 countries, infecting millions of people worldwide. To address this health emergency, countries have organized the flow of production and innovation to reduce the impact on health. This article shows the response of the Brazilian scientific community to meet the urgent needs of the public unifiedhealth system[SUS], aiming to guarantee universal access to an estimated population of 211 million. By December 2020, Brazil had recorded more than six million cases and approximately 175,000 deaths.
We collected data on research, development and innovation projects carried out by 114 public universities (plus Oswaldo Cruz Foundation [Fiocruz] and Butantan Institute), as reported on their websites. Additionally, we examined the studies on COVID-19 approved by the National Comission for Research Ethics, as well as those reported on the Ministry of Education website as of May 15, 2020.
The 789 identified projects were classified ac Brazilian society, in line with the constitutional right of universal health access and universal health coverage.
Curcumin, a natural polyphenolic substance, has been known for more than two millennia as having strong anti-inflammatory activity towards multiple ailments, including arthritis. The main drawback of curcumin is its poor solubility in water, which leads to low intestinal absorption and minimal bioavailability. In this study, we aimed to compare the anti-arthritic in vivo effect of different curcumin preparations - basic curcumin extract, micellar curcumin, curcumin mixture with piperine, and microencapsulated curcumin.
Arthritis was induced in Wistar rats by complete Freund's adjuvant, and the severity of arthritis was evaluated daily using the arthritis score system. Curcumin preparations were given to animals per os daily for 20 consecutive days, starting at 6th day after arthritis induction. To determine the inflammatory background, pro-inflammatory cytokines were determined using the ELISA test. In addition, hematologic test, weight change, and limb swelling were tracked.
Our results indicate that curcumin had a rather weak effect on arthritis progression in the Wistar rat model, microencapsulated curcumin effectively prevented the progression of arthritis - the disease stabilized after 10 days of supplementation. It also reduced the levels of immune cells (neutrophils and leukocytes), as well as pro-inflammatory cytokines - TNFα, IL-1, and IL-6, which levels were close to arthritis-free control. Other formulations of curcumin had lower or no effect on arthritis progression.
Our study shows that the same concentrations of curcumin had a distinctly expressed positive anti-inflammatory effect depending on the form of its delivery. Specifically, we found that microencapsulated curcumin had the most promising effect for treatment.
