Tungsten road nails are commonly used by farriers to increase grip between the hoof and the ground surface. There is limited evidence relating the use of road nails to the fundamental mechanics of movement. Grip is important for efficient deceleration on landing and subsequent propulsion, but this must be balanced against an amount of slip to divide the landing force into horizontal as well as vertical subcomponents. Here, we conducted an intervention study to quantify the effect of lateral heel road nail placement on weight bearing and propulsion in 10 horses trotting on tarmac. Previous work showed an association between equine gluten-sensitive enteropathy and IgA antibodies to tissue transglutaminase (TGA) in serum. The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of IgA antibodies to TGA in a group of healthy non-gluten-free sport ponies and to present a case of tentative gluten-sensitive enteropathy and dermatitis in a horse. Blood samples were obtained from 40 healthy jumping ponies. The ponies comprised 12 mares, 8 stallions, and 20 geldings with an average age of 9.0 ± 3.8 years (±SD; range 3-19 years). Sera were tested for IgA antibodies against human recombinant TGA. Significance (P less then .05) of the correlation between TGA titer and age in these ponies was assessed using Pearson test (two tailed). In addition, to further illustrate tentative equine gluten-sensitive enteropathy and dermatitis, the clinical course in an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood sport horse gelding has been described. The average TGA titer was 21.4 ± 13.6 AU/mL (range 2-65 AU/mL). There was a significant (P = .013) correlation (r = 0.389) between age and TGA titer in ponies. One of the 40 ponies (2.5%) showed an elevated TGA titer. An elevated TGA titer decreased after a gluten-free ration for 3 months in an 11-year-old Warmblood gelding with a tentative diagnosis of ISBD associated with full remission of the generalized skin reaction. To our best knowledge, this is the first study assessing TGA antibodies in sera from healthy non-gluten-free ponies and showing a correlation with age. The presented case could be the first one of a horse with a tentative diagnosis of gluten-sensitive enteropathy combined with dermatitis. Given the reported findings, this study warrants further investigations into gluten-sensitive enteropathy and dermatitis in individual horses affected with ISBD.The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) in horses with colic by associating the underlying etiologies with directly acquired IAP values and survival rate. This is a 2-year cohort study (2014-2016). Horses with clinical signs of colic were admitted to the veterinary teaching hospital during the period 2014-2016. Twenty-eight horses, of different breeds, males (stallions and geldings) and females, aged between 2 and 20 years, and weighing from 300 to 450 kg presenting with clinical signs of colic, were included in the study. IAP was directly acquired at the right flank (standing under sedation) and at the linea alba (supine position under general anesthesia). Twenty IAP measurements were recorded at end expiration for each recording site. IAP values >0.0 mmHg, obtained at the upper right flank in the standing position, were associated with surgical treatment (P .0 mmHg, at the upper right flank. These horses were also considerably more likely to require surgical intervention (P less then .05) and death/euthanasia was more likely in this group of horses (P less then .001).This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of juvenile osteochondral conditions (JOCCs) in yearling Thoroughbred (TB) racehorses in Southern Brazil, as well as to examine the same animals studied as weanlings by Bastos et al. (2017) and compare the radiographic findings for the two ages. Radiographs of 76 male and female TB yearlings from Paraná State, Southern Brazil, were investigated. The proximal interphalangeal, metacarpophalangeal/metatarsophalangeal (MC/MT), tarsal, and femorotibial (FT) joints were evaluated using 24 radiographic projections. The evaluation consisted of a severity index (rated as 0, 1, 2, 4, or 8), the sum of which resulted in an osteoarticular status (OAS) of good, intermediate, or poor for each animal. Radiographs of 92% of the investigated animals presented at least one finding consistent with JOCCs. The most affected region was the tarsal joint (72.9%), followed by the FT (50%), MT (25%), and MC (23%) joints. Thirty-three (43.4%) horses presented a decline in their OAS, whereas nine (11.8%) presented an improvement from the weanling to yearling age. The radiographic findings suggest that JOCCs are frequent in TB yearlings, but the meaning and relevance of these radiographic findings require further study.This report describes a case of sudden death of a pregnant miniature mare due to an acute ovarian hemorrhage leading to fatal hemoperitoneum. The miniature horse was a 12-year-old female, 60 days pregnant, with a body condition score of 7 (1-9), with a history of obesity and laminitis. Necropsy revealed hemoperitoneum due to an ovarian capsule rupture and hemorrhage after a physiological supplementary ovulation and luteinization. Ovarian rupture after ovulation is uncommon in mares.Colic surgery is one of the most painful procedures carried out in horses.
