Recent data suggest that pseudanthia are analogs of single flowers not only morphologically but also at developmental and genetic level, and cannot merely be considered as condensed inflorescences. The large meristem size provides an advantage to study basic principles of patterning as well as inflorescence diversity in this evolutionary successful family. This knowledge has also practical importance in the commercially important crops of the family.Bisphenol A (BPA) is a common industrial chemical with significant adverse impacts on biological systems as an environmental contaminant. UV/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) is a well-established technology for BPA treatment in water while UV/sodium percarbonate (UV/SPC) is an emerging technology with unclear biological impacts of treated effluent. Therefore, in this study, the toxicity evaluation of BPA solution treated with UV/H2O2 and UV/SPC was preformed and compared based on transformation products (TPs) profile, quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR), Escherichia coli (E. coli) toxicity assays, and metabolomic analysis. TPs with hydroxylation, double-ring split, and single-ring cleavage were generated from BPA during the treatments with both technologies, but TPs with quinonation were specifically detected in UV/H2O2 treated solution at the UV dose of 1470 mJ cm-2. QSAR prediction based on TPs profile (excluding benzoquinone TPs) suggested that UV/H2O2 and UV/SPC treatments of BPA may increase miological impacts of BPA and its solutions treated with UV/H2O2 or UV/SPC, thus providing insights for their application prospect for water and wastewater treatment.Supercritical CO2 (sCO2) displaces water from wastewater, alum, and papermill sludge. The sCO2 appears to enter the sludge matrix through viscous fingering through the entrained water. Because the water removed far exceeds the solubility of water in sCO2, it must be displaced by the sCO2 rather than dissolved out. Adding a small amount of soap to the sludge converts some of the bound water into free water, which can then be displaced by sCO2. Application of the sCO2 in multiple stages greatly enhances dewatering as compared to a single stage process. Approximately 70, 70 and 85% of the initial water can be removed from alum, wastewater and paper sludges, respectively, through a five-stage process. Staged application of sCO2 doubles the efficiency of water removal over a single-stage process of the same duration. It is proposed that when the sCO2 entrained in the sludge is decompressed between stages some of the water is explosively displaced by the expanding CO2.The Amazon aquatic ecosystems have been modified by the human population growth, going through changes in their water bodies and aquatic biota. The spectacled alligator (Caiman crocodilus crocodilus) has a wide distribution and adaptability to several environments, even those polluted ones. This study aimed to investigate if a Caiman species living in urban streams of Manaus city (Amazonas State, Brazil) is affected by environmental pollution. For that, it was used classical and molecular cytogenetic procedures, in addition to micronucleus and comet assays. Although the karyotype macrostructure remains unaltered (2 n = 42 chromosomes; 24 t + 18 m/sm; NF = 60), the genotoxic analysis and the cytogenetic mapping of repetitive DNA sequences demonstrated that polluted environments alter the genome of the specimens, affecting both the chromosomal organization and the genetic material.Heavy-metal contamination is widespread in agricultural soils worldwide, especially paddy soils contaminated by Cd. Amendment-induced immobilization of heavy metals is an attractive and effective technique, provided that cost-effective materials are used. This field experiment compared three alkaline passivators (attapulgite, processed oyster shell powder, and mixed soil conditioner) at a rate of 2.25 t ha-1 for their effectiveness in decreasing Cd bioavailability in soils and accumulation in rice plants in a paddy field contaminated by Cd (0.38 Cd mg kg-1). The utilization of attapulgite and processed oyster shell powder decreased labile fractions but increased stable fractions of Cd in soils through ion exchange, precipitation and complexation. The addition of attapulgite decreased the concentration of bioavailable Cd in both bulk and rhizosphere soils, whereas the amendment of processed oyster shell powder decreased it only in bulk soil. Exposure to highly concentrated H2S can induce oxidative stress and autophagy. However, the mechanism underlying the liver damage caused by H2S has not been identified. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), the key component of endotoxin, can induce oxidative stress and autophagy. For this experiment, we used one-day-old chickens as model organisms to evaluate the effects of H2S combined with LPS on oxidative stress and autophagy. The four groups (control group, LPS group, H2S group and H2S-LPS group) were observed by electron microscopy, detected by oxidative stress kit, analyzed by quantitative real-time quantitative PCR, and analyzed by Western blot. We found that the activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, antioxidant glutathione, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) decreased in the H2S group compared to those in the control group; however, malondialdehyde levels in the H2S group increased.
