Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are important complications for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The study aimed to explore whether serum leptin is associated with a increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) events in patients with RA.

The univariate analysis showed that patients with RA with higher serum leptin levels had higher rates of CV events and CV mortality, respectively (P <.001). The logistic regression model showed that leptin was independently related to CVD history (odds ratio = 1.603, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.329-2.195; P =.005) after adjusting for confounding factors in patients with RA at baseline. The multivariate Cox proportional hazard model suggested that leptin was an independent prognostic factor for CV events in patients with RA after adjustments were made for clinical confounding factors (hazard ratio = 2.467, 95% CI, 2.019-4.495; P <.001). The Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that compared with patients with RA with leptin levels below the median value (≤15.4 mg/L), patients with leptin above the median value (>15.4 μg/L) had a higher rate of CV events (P <.001).

We draw on Ostrom's theory of polycentric governance, which assumes that policy actors' autonomous interactions at various levels produce better policy implementation when managing the provision of public goods. To explain the various degrees of implementation, we analyse the effects of face-to-face horizontal and vertical interactions between public hospitals and other policy actors by employing sequential explanatory mixed methods. Using originally collected survey data of public hospitals in two regions of the Philippines, we quantitatively demonstrate that the vertical interactions between hospitals and implementing agencies at local levels as well as monitoring and prompt disbursement of the costs by the implementation agency matter when seeking to enhance the delivery of free health care at public hospitals in the Philippines. We further qualitatively explore why horizontal and vertical interactions are made possible by comparing three public hospitals.
Airway obstruction is a treatable cause of potentially preventable death on the battlefield. Emergency cricothyrotomies are rarely performed in developed countries, but are a common prehospital procedure in recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. We describe prehospital airway interventions performed on pediatric casualties with a focus on cricothyrotomy during these recent conflicts.

This is a secondary analysis of previously published dataset from the Department of Defense Trauma Registry for pediatric encounters from January 2007 to January 2017. Within our dataset we searched for all instances of airway interventions in the prehospital setting.

During this time, there were 3,439 pediatric casualties in the registry with a total of 18 prehospital cricothyrotomies and 211 prehospital intubations. For cricothyrotomies, the median age was 10 years, most (72.2%) were male, median composite injury score was 25, most were injured by explosive (44.4%), more commonly located in Afghanistan (77.8%), and appl personnel for pediatric trauma care in accordance with military clinical practice guidelines.
Growing evidence suggests that IL-1β -511C>T, as a functional variant, affects the risk of developing breast cancer (BC); however, the results have not been conclusive. This meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the link between this variant and BC risk.

We retrieved available publications on IL-1β -511C>T polymorphism by conducting a comprehensive literature search on the Web of Science, MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and Google scholar databases (last search on February 25, 2020).

The overall analysis indicates that IL-1β -511C>T polymorphism conferred an increased risk of BC under a recessive TT vs CT+CC model by 1.14-fold and showed protection against BC under an overdominant CT vs TT+CC genetic contrast model (odds ratio = 0.84). Stratified analysis based on ethnicity revealed the protective effect of this single-nucleotide polymorphism against BC risk in Caucasian patients.

Our data results provide a proof of concept for the association of IL-1β -511C>T with BC risk. Larger, well-designed population-based studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Data from a binomial calculator, along with computer simulations of random walkers, documented that the inherent variance associated with estimates of absolute population density generated by a single catch number in a pheromone-baited monitoring trap becomes very high when catch probability averaged across the trap's sampling area falls below 0.02, as is the case for most insect trapping systems operating in the open field. The imprecision associated with interpretations of single catch numbers renders many current pest management decisions risky and unsatisfactory. Here we reinforce how single-trap, multiple-release experiments can and should be used to measure catch probability, plume reach, and trap sampling area. When catch probability lies in the danger zone below 0.02, steps are suggested for how multiple traps might be deployed to raise composite catch probability to a level where estimates of absolute pest density become reliable.
