Rickettsioses are diseases caused by intracellular Gram-negative bacteria of the Rickettsiaceae family and transmitted through the bite of infected ticks or mites.

To investigate the clinical and subclinical characteristics and prognostic severe factors of the disease caused by Rickettsiaceae.

A prospective, descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at Department of Infectious Diseases of two military hospitals in Northern Vietnam from May 2013 to June 2019, in which 88 adult febrile patients caused by
(50 patients) or
spp. (38 patients) were enrolled. We recorded information regarding epidemiological characteristics (age, geography, residence, occupation), medical history, clinical and subclinical findings, life-threatening complications during treatment, outcomes and some factors predicting serious life-threatening complications in a case record form.

Scrub typhus (ST) patients had eschar (70%), skin-conjunctiva congestion (60%) and lymphadenopathy (44%).
patients had a higher rate ofof scrub typhus and distinguishing 2 groups of diseases. Respiratory distress, increase in AST ≥ 200 UI/l and level of PCT were used as major prognostic factors in patients with Rickettsiaceae.
infections are the major cause of global morbidity and mortality among children and patients aged more than 65 years. This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial resistance, bacterial serotype distribution, and genetic characteristics of invasive
from different cities in North China.

A total of 164 invasive
strains were collected from 8 hospitals in 5 regions of North China between April 2016 and October 2017. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined using the agar dilution method. Capsular serotypes were identified using the Quellung reaction test. Molecular epidemiology was investigated using multilocus sequence typing.

isolates were highly resistant to macrolides, clindamycin, and tetracycline in all age groups. The overall rate of resistance to penicillin was 56.7%. However, fluoroquinolones and vancomycin maintained excellent antimicrobial activities. The rate of resistance to β-lactam in strains isolated from children aged less than 18 years was significantly higher than that in strains from other age groups. The most prevalent serotypes were 14 (22.6%), 19F (16.5%), non-vaccine types (14.0%), 19A (9.8%), and 23F (9.1%). find more The coverage for PCV10 and PCV13 was 59.8% and 75.6%, respectively. The vaccine coverage rate was the highest among children aged less than 5 years. The proportion of penicillin-resistant isolates was higher among vaccine-covered strains compared with non-covered strains.
showed considerable clonal dissemination, and ST876 (28, 17.1%), ST271 (22, 13.4%), ST81 (17, 10.4%) and ST320 (14, 8.5%) were the major STs.

All the 164 invasive
isolates demonstrated high resistance to antibiotics. The coverage of
vaccine was higher in children than in adults.
All the 164 invasive S. pneumoniae isolates demonstrated high resistance to antibiotics. The coverage of S. pneumoniae vaccine was higher in children than in adults.
Bone tissue infections are a difficult problem in orthopedic surgery. Topical application of vancomycin and tobramycin powder has been proved to significantly reduce infection rates. However, the osteogenic effect of the topical application of these two antibiotics is unclear. In this study, the osteogenic effect of local delivery antibiotics on bone regeneration was investigated in vitro.

Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) were incubated in the presence of vancomycin (14.28μg/mL), tobramycin (28.57μg/mL), or vancomycin combined with tobramycin (vancomycin 14.28μg/mL and tobramycin 28.57μg/mL). Cell viability, proliferation, and migration were analyzed. The alizarin red staining as well as the alkaline phosphatase staining was investigated. Then, the quantitative real-time (qRT)-PCR of osteogenic mRNA expression levels were also evaluated.

The results showed that vancomycin combined with tobramycin has no adverse effect on the viability and proliferation of BMSCs. The topical application of vancomycin alone may interfere with the bone regenerative processes. However, the tobramycin can promote the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs and also rescue the osteogenic potential of BMSCs inhibited by vancomycin both in vitro.

From this in vitro study, local application of vancomycin combined with tobramycin does not affect the osteogenic potential of BMSCs.

This study aims to describe the spectrum of allergic diseases of children and adolescents in a single allergy treatment centre in Botswana, over a period of 8 years.

A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using medical records of all patients aged 18 years or younger, seen at an allergy treatment centre in Botswana. Data were presented descriptively. Association between variables was explored by

-test.

Four hundred and seven patients with a mean age of 5.8 years (SD 4.4) at the time of presentation included 239 (58.7%) females and 365 (87.5%) black Africans. The most common diseases were asthma (n=249, 61.2%) followed by allergic rhinitis (AR) (n=232, 57.0%) and atopic dermatitis (AD) (n=165, 40.5%). One hundred and fifteen cases (46.2%) of asthmatic patients were skin prick test positive; sensitized to grass, moulds, dust mites and animal dander, in decreasing frequency, whereas those with allergic rhinitis (AR) and allergic conjunctivitis (AC) were sensitized to trees and all allergens identified in asthmatics.
