Sleep disturbance is frequently observed inpatients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD), and this population usually presents imbalances in trace elements. We investigated the association between blood trace element levels and sleep quality inpatients on MHD.
This cross-sectional and single-center study was performed in September 2019. Patients regularly undergoing hemodialysis for > 3 months at our center were recruited, and demographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters were recorded. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was applied to define sleep disturbance. Blood trace element (zinc, manganese, copper, selenium, and lead) levels were measured using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer.
In total, 121patients on MHD (male/female = 6853) were enrolled in the study (mean age 63.7 ± 13.9 years, median dialysis vintage 38.0 [20.0, 60.0] months). According to PSQI, 56 (46%) patients experienced severe sleep disturbance. These patients were characterized by older age, higher serum parat the results.Angiogenesis is a key event in non-small cell lung cancer progression. Alginic acid (AA), a kind of naturally occurring polyuronic acid, is generally enriched in edible brown algae. Recent studies have uncovered its anti-anaphylactic and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the effects of AA on human malignancies remain unknown. Herein, efficient inhibition of AA on NSCLC-induced angiogenesis was observed with tube formation and xenograft models. Subsequent results indicated that AA downregulated the expression of VEGF-A, a key angiogenesis-inducing cytokine. In addition, AA downregulated STAT3, a transcriptional inducer of VEGF-A and increased non-coding RNA miR-506 expression, respectively. Furthermore, miR-506 directly modulated STAT3 relying on base pairing the 3'-UTR in STAT3 mRNA. We also found that abrogation of miR-506 abolished the inhibitory effect of AA on VEGF-A expression and NSCLC-induced angiogenesis. Finally, xenografts experiments also showed that oral administration of AA could significantly attenuate NSCLC angiogenesis, indicated by decreased micro-vessel density (MVD) and the MVD marker CD31 expression in xenografts tissues. Correspondingly, AA treatment also downregulated VEGF-A, STAT3 and increased miR-506 expression in xenografts samples, respectively. Taken together, these results suggested that AA could suppress NSCLC-induced angiogenesis via miR-506/STAT3/VEGF-A axis. .The Pearl River Delta, where Aedes albopictus (Ae. albopictus) is the only vector for dengue transmission, has exhibited one of the highest dengue burdens in southern China in recent decades. However, whether dengue virus (DENV) can overwinter in Ae. albopictus in the Pearl River Delta has not been determined to date. In this study, 300 field-derived Ae. albopictus mosquitoes from Guangzhou that were infected with the predominant endemic DENV-1 strain were investigated under simulated urban balcony environment from October 16, 2016, to June 16, 2017. The vertical transmission of DENV in the infected overwintering Ae. albopictus was analyzed. The DENV infected overwintering mosquitoes were evaluated for viral load at nine-time points using reverse transcription-quantitative PCR. The vector competence of the infected overwintering Ae. albopictus was also investigated by using suckling mice. Adult mosquitoes and larvae were found during the observation period. The vertical transmission of DENV-1 was documented. The DENV-1-positive rates between overwintering males and females had no difference. The proportion of DENV-1-positive overwintering mosquitoes decreased over time and had no difference beyond three months after the experiment. Overwintering mosquitoes can spread DENV-1 to hosts. No engorged mosquitoes at an ambient temperature below 15 °C were observed. The ratio of engorged mosquitoes was positively correlated with the ambient temperature ranging from 15 to 30 °C. SL-327 Our results demonstrated that DENV can overwinter in Ae. albopictus in the Pearl River Delta, Ae. albopictus is the competent vector for DENV, and maintain autochthonous dengue outbreaks in the Pearl River Delta through vertical transmission.Wolfram syndrome (WS) is mainly caused by mutations in the WFS1 gene and characterized by diabetes mellitus, optic atrophy, hearing loss, and central diabetes insipidus (CDI). WFS1 is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-resident transmembrane protein, and Wfs1 knockout (Wfs1-/-) mice, which have been used as a mouse model for WS, reportedly manifested impairment of glucose tolerance due to pancreatic β-cell loss. In the present study, we examined water balance, arginine vasopressin (AVP) secretion, and ER stress in AVP neurons of the hypothalamus in Wfs1-/- mice. There were no differences in urine volumes between Wfs1-/- and wild-type mice with free access to water. Conversely, when mice were subjected to intermittent water deprivation (WD) for 20 weeks, during which water was unavailable for 2 days a week, urine volumes were larger in Wfs1-/- mice, accompanied by lower urine AVP concentrations and urine osmolality, compared to wild-type mice. The mRNA expression of immunoglobulin heavy chain binding protein, a marker of ER stress, was significantly increased in the supraoptic nucleus and paraventricular nuclei in Wfs1-/- mice compared to wild-type mice after WD. Our results thus showed that Wfs1 knockout leads to a decrease in AVP secretion during dehydration, which could explain in part the mechanisms by which Wfs1 mutations cause CDI in humans.
The death rate for female breast cancer increases progressively with age, but organizations differ in their mammography screening recommendations for older women. To understand current patterns of screening mammography use and breast cancer diagnoses among older women, we examined recent national data on mammography screening use and breast cancer incidence and stage at diagnosis among women aged ≥ 65years.
We examined breast cancer incidence using the 2016 United States Cancer Statistics dataset and analyzed screening mammography use among women aged ≥ 65years using the 2018 National Health Interview Survey.
Women aged 70-74years had the highest breast cancer incidence rate (458.3 cases per 100,000 women), and women aged ≥ 85years had the lowest rate (295.2 per 100,000 women). The proportion of cancer diagnosed at distant stage or with unknown stage increased with age.
