Student engagement is typically measured by class attendance and questionnaires. Learning management systems (LMS) provide additional sources of objective data that can evaluate student performance. This study compared dental students' self-report of course video viewing with LMS data.

Dental students in a 2018 flipped pediatric dentistry course were given a questionnaire after course completion that captured self-reported course video viewing. Student data and time spent on videos were extracted from the LMS and matched to the questionnaire. McNemar's test evaluated differences between self-reported and matching LMS data.

Of the 109 enrolled students, 99 (91%) completed the questionnaire. Most students self-reported that they watched more than half of the videos (71%), re-watched at least once (89%), and watched at times other than 8 a.m.-5 p.m. (80%). Of the 104 students with data from the LMS, 40% of students watched more than half of the videos, 49% re-watched at least one video, and 60% watched between 8 a.m.-5 p.m. LMS data showed 14 (13%) students did not watch any videos. Significant differences were found between self-reported video viewing and matched LMS video data in (1) percentage of videos watched, (2) number of times videos were re-watched, and (3) most frequent time for watching the videos (p<0.001 for all).

However, the inclusion of PE does not always result in positive effects and conflicting findings have highlighted the many nuances involved. Effects are known to depend on species and life stage tested, but effects may also vary with differences in the specific items used as enrichment between and within studies. Reporting fine-scale characteristics of items used as enrichment in studies may help to reveal these factors. We conducted a survey of PE-focused studies published in the last 5 years to examine the current state of methodological reporting. The survey results suggest that some aspects of enrichment are not adequately detailed. For example, the amount and dimensions of objects used as enrichment were frequently omitted. Similarly, the ecological relevance, or other justification, for enrichment items was frequently not made explicit. Focusing on ecologically relevant aspects of PE and increasing the level of detail reported in studies may benefit future work and we propose a framework with the acronym DETAILS (Dimensions, Ecological rationale, Timing of enrichment, Amount, Inputs, Lighting and Social environment). We outline the potential importance of each of the elements of this framework with the hope it may aid in the level of reporting and standardization across studies, ultimately aiding the search for more beneficial types of PE and the development of our understanding and ability to improve the welfare of captive fish and promote more biologically relevant behaviour.Prenatal exposure to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants may influence white matter (WM) development, as previous studies report widespread microstructural alterations and reduced interhemispheric connectivity in SSRI-exposed infants. In rodents, perinatal SSRIs had sex-specific disruptions in corpus callosum (CC) axon architecture and connectivity; yet it is unknown whether SSRI-related brain outcomes in humans are sex specific. selleck kinase inhibitor In this study, the neonate CC was selected as a region-of-interest to investigate whether prenatal SSRI exposure has sex-specific effects on early WM microstructure. On postnatal day 7, diffusion tensor imaging was used to assess WM microstructure in SSRI-exposed (n = 24; 12 male) and nonexposed (n = 48; 28 male) term-born neonates. Fractional anisotropy was extracted from CC voxels and a multivariate discriminant analysis was used to identify latent patterns differing between neonates grouped by SSRI-exposure and sex. Such effects were identified across three dimensions, representing sex differences in SSRI-exposed neonates (genu, splenium), SSRI-related effects independent of sex (genu-to-rostral body), and sex differences in nonexposed neonates (isthmus-splenium, posterior midbody). Our findings suggest that CC microstructure may have a sex-specific, localized, developmental sensitivity to prenatal SSRI exposure.The introduction of the continuous flow gynecologic resectoscope (CFGR) in 1989 revolutionized minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (MIGS) by introducing such intrauterine procedures as hysteroscopic myomectomy, polypectomy, and endometrial ablation. However, with the subsequent introduction of global endometrial ablation (GEA) devices and hysteroscopic morcellators (HMs), the CFGR has fallen into relative disuse-a regrettable situation since it remains ideally suited for accomplishing many procedures that are otherwise not achievable with these newer technologies. Procedures which involve greater precision and control-endomyometrial resection (EMR), hysteroscopic metroplasty, the correction of isthmoceles, the resection of intramural myomas, and the management of late-onset endometrial ablation failure-are only possible with the CFGR. In addition, the CFGR permits a variety of functions that would otherwise require several different disposable platforms. Despite the benefits of the gynecologic resectoscope, there are clear impediments to its use including a scarcity of educational resources and trained experts, medico-legal concerns, institutional obstacles to organizing an operative team, and the need to develop and maintain an adequate caseload. In Part I of this three-part series, the author will review why the CFGR remains a relevant and indispensable tool for the minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon, the composition of an operating room team, and the instrumentation and skills necessary to accomplish basic resectoscopic surgery. In Part II, we will describe how ultrasound guidance can be used to assist the execution of more challenging intermediate-level cases. Finally, in Part III, we will discuss the most demanding cases for the resectoscopic surgeon-the treatment of post-ablation failures and the removal of intramural leiomyomas-which are clinical scenarios that require ultrasound guidance and well-honed resectoscopic surgical skills.
