Vitamin D deficiency and periodontitis are commonly prevalent among Saudi adults. However, the association between periodontitis and vitamin D status has not been well documented. TGF-beta activation This study aims to examine the association between periodontitis and vitamin D status among adults in the Albaha region of Saudi Arabia. A case-control study of 123 Saudi adults was conducted; 60 had severe or moderate periodontitis, and 63 were periodontally healthy. Data was collected by an online self-reported sociodemographic questionnaire. All participants then underwent a full periodontal examination. Blood samples were also provided to assess participants' vitamin D statuses through serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D). A total of 60 cases and 63 controls matched for BMI (30.2 ± 4.86 kg/m2), age (40.01 ± 7.73 years), and sex (46.3% and 53.7% male and female, respectively) participated in the study. Mean levels of 25(OH)D were significantly lower in periodontitis participants than in controls (25.03 ± 8.55 ng/ml, 29.19 ± 12.82 ng/ml, p = 0.037, respectively). Lower odds of periodontitis were detected per unit of 25(OH)D level (OR 0.964, 95% CI; 0.931-0.999, p = 0.043). In conclusion, periodontitis is significantly associated with deficient and insufficient levels of vitamin D among Saudi adults in the Albaha region. Future longitudinal research with a larger sample size may be suggested to confirm these results.
To assess sex differences in the prevalence of sarcopenia among pre-frail community-dwelling older adults in Saudi Arabia.
This was a cross-sectional study conducted at a tertiary-level hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2019. The study participants were pre-frail community-dwelling older adults, according to the Edmonton Frail Scale. The SARC-F questionnaire was used to diagnose sarcopenia. The Katz Activities of Daily Living (ADL) was used to rank the adequacy of performance in six functions bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, continence, and feeding, while the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale was used to assess the more complex ADL necessary for living in the community.
In total, 283 community-dwelling older adults were recruited for this study, with a mean (±SD) age of 70.77 (±6.26) years; 72.7% of the total were female participants. The majority (85.5%) of the patients reported that they needed home care assistance. The mean ADL score of the participants was high, inding older adult population were sarcopenic. The prevalence of sarcopenia was significantly higher among females than males. The strongest predictor of sarcopenia was an ADL score <2 based on the Katz index in males and the need for home care assistance in females.

In fact, gene expressions of wheat play an important role in growth and productivity that are affected by drought stress. The objective of this work focused on analysis gene feature on spring wheat represented by nucleotide and gene expressions under drought stress. It was found that the higher codon adaptation index was in both wheat root and L-galactono-1, 4-lactone dehydrogenase. It was also found that guanine and cytosine content were high (55.56%) in wheat root. Whereas, guanine and cytosine content were low (41.28%) in L-galactono-1, 4-lactone dehydrogenase. Moreover, the higher relative synonymous codon usage value was observed in codon CAA (1.20), GAA (1.33), GAT (1.00), and ATG (1.00) in wheat root and thus about 62.95% of the total variation in relative synonymous codon was explained by principal component analysis. Additionally, high averages frequency number of codon were (above 15.76) in Met, Lys, Ala, Gly, Phe, Asp, Glu, His, and Tyr; whereas, low averages were in remaining amino acids and majority (90%) of modified relative codon bias values was between 0.40 and 0.90. Shortly, calculations and analysis of codon usage pattern under drought stress would help for genetic engineering, molecular evolution, and gene prediction in wheat studies for developing varieties that associate with drought tolerance.
The twenty first century can be called the genomic era referring to the rapid development of genetics, and the beginning of genomic medicine. An initial step towards genomic medicine is to evaluate the knowledge and attitude towards genetic testing among different populations. The aims of this study were to assess the genetic knowledge and attitude towards genetic testing among the Jordanian population and patients with immune diseases. In addition, we evaluated the association between knowledge, attitude and several demographic factors of the population.
This study was performed using an online questionnaire that was distributed to respondents from different regions of Jordan.
A total of 1149 participants were recruited from the Jordanian population. Overall factual genetic knowledge of the participants was good (65.4%), with education level, working or studying in a health-related field and household average monthly income being significant predictors of factual knowledge scores (P=0.03, P<0.001 anke informed decisions that help in the employment of personalized medicine.
Despite the fact that our Jordanian-based study revealed a good level of genetic knowledge as well as a favorable attitude towards genetic testing, we realized an imbalance of knowledge between gene-related scientific facts and disease-related concepts as well as between factual and perceived genetic knowledge, which indicates the necessity of increasing the awareness about genetic testing in order to ensure that individuals can take informed decisions that help in the employment of personalized medicine.Aiming at the reutilizing wastewater for algal growth and biomass production, a saline water rejected from reverse osmosis (RO) facility (salinity 67.59 g L-1) was used to cultivate the pre-adapted green microalga Chlorella vulgaris. The inoculum was prepared by growing cells in modified BG-11 medium, and adaptation was performed by applying a gradual increase in salinity (56.0 g L-1 NaCl and 125 ppm FeSO4·7H2O) to the culture in 200 L photobioreactor. Experiments using the adapted alga were performed using original-rejected water (ORW) and treated rejected water (TRW) comparing with the recommended growth medium (BG-11). The initial salinity of ORW was chemically reduced to 39.1 g L-1 to obtain TRW. Vertical photobioreactors (15 L) was used for indoor growth experiments. Growth in BG-11 resulted in 1.23 g L-1, while the next adaptation growth reached 2.14 g L-1 of dry biomass. The dry weights of re-cultivated Chlorella after adaptation were 1.49 and 2.19 g L-1 from ORW and TRW; respectively. The cellular oil content was only 12% when cells grown under control conditions verses to 14.
