Additionally, by comparing the diverse populations of honey bees that exhibit those traits, this review highlights the consequences of anthropogenic and natural selection in the interactions between hosts and parasites.Plant viruses face many challenges in agricultural environments. Although crop fields appear to be abundant resources for these pathogens, it may be difficult for viruses to "escape" from crop environments prior to host senescence or harvesting. One way for viruses to increase the odds of persisting outside of agricultural fields across seasons is by evolving traits that increase transmission opportunities between crops and wild plant communities. There is accumulating evidence that some viruses can achieve this by manipulating crop plant phenotypes in ways that enhance transmission by vectors. Putative manipulations occur through alteration of plant cues (color, size, texture, foliar volatiles, in-leaf metabolites, defenses, and leaf cuticles) that mediate vector orientation, feeding, and dispersal behaviors. Virus effects on host phenotypes are not uniform but appear to exhibit convergence depending on virus traits underlying transmission, particularly the duration of probing and feeding required to acquire and inoculate distinct types of plant viruses. This shared congruence in manipulation strategies and mechanisms across divergent virus lineages suggests that such effects may be adaptive. To discern if this is the case, researchers must consider molecular and environmental constraints on virus evolution, including those imposed by insect vectors from organismal to landscape scales. In this review, we synthesize applied research on vector-borne virus transmission in laboratory and field settings to identify the main factors determining transmission opportunities for plant viruses, and thus, selection pressure to evolve manipulative traits. We then examine these outputs in the context of studies reporting putative instances of plant virus manipulation. Our synthesis reveals important disconnects between virus manipulation studies and actual selection pressures imposed by vectors in real-world contexts.Increased testicular temperature reduces sperm motility, morphology and fertility. Our objectives were to characterize effects of testicular hyperthermia (scrotal insulation) on acute testosterone concentrations and gene expression in Bos indicus testes. Nelore bulls (n = 20), ∼27 mo of age, 375 kg, scrotal circumference >31 cm, with ≥30% motile sperm, were allocated into four groups (n = 5/group) non-insulated (Control) and insulation removed after 12, 24, or 48 h. Immediately after insulation, intratesticular temperatures (needle thermocouples) were coolest in Control bulls and warmest in 48-h bulls (mean ± SEM, 35.28 ± 0.31 vs 38.62 ± 0.57 °C, P less then 0.05). Bulls were castrated and testes recovered. Testicular testosterone concentrations were higher in Control versus 48-h bulls (3119 ± 973.3 and 295.5 ± 122.8 ng/g of tissue, respectively, P less then 0.05). Total RNA was extracted, reverse transcribed and RT-qPCR done. For STAR, mRNA abundance decreased from Control to 48 h (1.14 + 0.32 vs 0.32 + 0.5, P less then 0.05). For BCL2, expression decreased from Control to 24 h (1.00 + 0.07 vs 0.70 + 0.12, P less then 0.05), but then rebounded. In addition, GPX1 had a 70% increase (P less then 0.05) at 48 h, whereas HSP70 had a 34-fold increase (P less then 0.05) at 12 h and 2- and 14-fold increases (P less then 0.05) at 24 and 48 h, respectively. HSF1, BAX, P53 and CASP 8 remained unchanged. Downregulation of STAR, critical in androgen production, was consistent with reduced testosterone concentrations, whereas increased GPX1 enhanced testicular antioxidative capability. Huge increases in HSP70 conferred protection again apoptosis and cell destruction, whereas reduced BCL2 promoted apoptosis. These findings provided novel insights into acute tissue responses (testosterone and gene activity) to testicular hyperthermia in B. indicus bulls.Background For many athletes, a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) represents a significant injury that requires a prolonged period away from the sport with substantial rehabilitation. Guanosine Hypothesis There will be no difference in return to play (RTP) and career length after hamstring tendon (HT) ACL reconstruction in a group of Canadian Football League professional players as compared with what has been already been reported in the literature among professional football players. Methods Data on athletes who sustained an ACL injury were collected by team physicians and head athletic trainers from 2002 to 2017 from 2 Canadian Football League teams. Patient details included age at the time of injury, initial injury date, position, practice versus game injury, and primary versus rerupture with injury-specific data, such as affected limb, concomitant injuries, graft choice, and procedure performed. RTP rates and career length data were collected throughraft was 2.9, 2.4, and 3 seasons. Logistic regression analysis found only concomitant medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries to be a negative predictor for RTP. Meniscal injuries were associated with a decreased RTP rate and career length, but this was not statistically significant. Conclusion The RTP rates after ACL reconstruction in this study are similar to those reported in National Football League players. A concomitant injury to the MCL injury was a negative predictor of RTP. Meniscal injuries demonstrated a trend for decreased RTP rate and career length, but this was not a significant predictor. A large portion of injuries occur early in the season, and further study should be done to examine potential preventative strategies to reduce ACL injuries.Ethnopharmacological relevance The fruit of Vitex rotundifolia L. (Verbenaceae) has been used in traditional medicine as sedative or analgesic agent for headache. Recent population-based cohort studies have shown that headache including migraines is a risk factor for dementia. Thus, the fruit of V. rotundifolia may be useful for treating cognitive dysfunction observed in dementia.
