Replacement Handles For Windows
Window handles are among the most used parts of your double-glazed windows. Over time, they can get worn out or rusted.
To replace a UPVC window handle, you will need to know the spindle length of the handle you are replacing and also its fixings. The best way to determine this is to examine the base of the handle you have previously replaced.
Handle
Over time, uPVC handles and window locks are susceptible to damage due to wear and tear or by accidental or deliberate damage. It is possible that the handle or lock becomes difficult to close or open, or that they are not even locked. It's tempting to replace the entire window unit when this happens, but it is not always required. In most instances the case, a new handle or lock is all that's needed.
The most common kind of uPVC window handle is the espagnolette. This handle has an outer spindle that extends from the handle. Read the Full Document is inserted into a gearbox which operates the multipoint locking system inside the window. We carry a wide selection of replacement handles and locks for all types uPVC window to ensure they work together properly.
It's an ideal idea, when replacing a uPVC handle to cover the screws to protect the screws from rust and ensure they remain secure. It is also possible to use a washer or spacer to create a more secure seal. A screw cap can stop debris and water from entering the handle, which can cause damage.
Once the handle has been removed from the window it's recommended to wash the spindle of the new handle, as well as the threaded section of the bolt. This will ensure that the new handle fits and works correctly, and can also help stop dirt from entering the multipoint lock.
Next it's time to install the new uPVC handle. It is important to go through the directions that come with the new handle and review the previous one to get a better idea of how it's done. The process is usually simple. If you have any issues that aren't covered in this guide, we suggest contact our team for more information.
It's also important to note that if you are replacing the uPVC cockspur handle (also known as an Espag handle) you will need to check the step height of the window in order to determine the appropriate size of handle. The steps height refers to the distance from the frame or base of the window to where the cockspur's cockspur's apex of the handle sits when installed.
Hinges
The hinges might not be in line with the window frame when windows begin to close and open with a visible space. This is usually an easy fix that can be resolved by a brand new set of replacement hinges for windows. We can offer a variety of different options and even modify the size of the hinges to fit your requirements.
We offer a variety of hinges suitable for upvc and timber windows. These are available in a choice of colours to match the frames of your existing windows and come with all fixings to install. We can supply repair screw packs for double-glazed windows that have hinges that are older in style. This will allow you to cut the old thread back into the frame.
We have a variety of hinge styles including standard casement window hinges that can be used with a standard or tilt and turn handle through to fire escape egress hinges designed for use on larger sized side hung windows. These hinges are designed to open fully in the event of an emergency and include an easy-clean position. We also stock restricted-egress hinges, which are designed to limit the opening angle of a window to a maximum of 100mm. This is ideal for families with children.
A squeaky hinge could be an indication that the hinges are wearing out, this is often caused by the rubbing of metal against metal. If the noise is still present, a small amount of lubricant will aid.
This is due to plumb windows being in a position to avoid binding. The operating sash is aligned with the frame, and the window will be able to open and close in a proper manner. A window that isn't plumb might have trouble opening and closing or become stretched over time, which can cause problems with the seal and appearance of the window.
When purchasing replacement upvc window hinges be aware that they are available in imperial or the metric sizes. The sizes in metric are more precise but it isn't evident when they are fitted. The first corner holes on the track are standard, but the other holes can vary based on the hardware that was originally used. It is important to measure the spacing of holes on your frame prior to purchasing it to ensure that the upvc hinges you purchase are the right size.
Crank
The normal wear and tear that happens over time can cause damage to the window handle, lock, or crank mechanism. This can make it more difficult to open and close your windows. It can also impact their security. If your window is difficult to open or shut or you hear a clicking sound when turning the handle it could be a sign that you need to replace the mechanism. If you're unable to lock your window or the multipoint lock is broken it might be worthwhile to consider replacing this piece of hardware too.
A new window crank can be replaced with minimal effort, but it's crucial to ensure that you purchase the correct size replacement. You can tell whether the replacement has the exact same step height as the old one by measuring the distance from the guide for the crank arm bushing to the notch on the track at the bottom of the frame. You can also take a measurement of the length of the spindle on your existing handle to determine what size you require to replace it with.
The type of handle on your window will determine the type of crank mechanism required for your casement and window awnings. Espag handles have a brain spindle in the back that is attached to the frame of the window and drives the mechanism. Cockspur handles have pegs which are fixed into the frame by three or four screws which are set in the sash and the frame.
It's simple to replace the window operator once you have found the appropriate replacement. First, take off any trim mounting screws that are on the casement cover of your window and carefully lift it up to reveal the insides of your window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new operating lever with the old one and remove any rusted trim screw. Attach the new lever to the window frame. Replace any screws that are damaged or bent. Then, you can place the casement cover over the mechanism.
