How to Replace Door Handles
The door handles of your home are an important element of your design. A new handle will elevate your space and bring your decor up to date.
Over time the knobs on your door may become stiff or even break. These are indications that it's time to change them. This guide will help you select the correct door handle replacement for your home.
Door Knobs
Door handles enhance the look of your home while also making it easier for people to open and shut doors. They come in a variety of finishes, colors, and types to complement your decor. If yours is beginning begin to show signs of wear or you just want to upgrade, replacing them is relatively easy and can be accomplished in a few steps.
You'll need to find the shaft, or spindle, through which the knob is inserted to the door. Some knobs have a tiny opening that you can use a screwdriver to remove the set screws that hold the handle in place. Some have a slot or hole where can be used with the flathead screwdriver on a spring-activated pin called a detent. When you press the pin and the latch mechanism opens, it releases and allows you to pull or push the knob.
Once you have the spindle, or shaft, in your hand Remove the knob and replace it. Make sure you align it properly and then verify that the latch is working correctly before tightening the new set screws.
After repairmywindowsanddoors 've replaced the knob, place the rod for latching over the door's hole and lock it in place with the rod mechanism on the second knob. Make sure the holes are lined up and then thread in the screws on the latch plate and tighten the screws.
Some prefer the smooth or brushed finish for their door hardware to create an elegant, modern look that complements other furniture in their homes. Some people prefer a rustic style that works well with farmhouse-style rooms. If you have family members with mobility limitations, you may be interested in a rim lock or lever-style door knobs that require less pressure to operate.
While aesthetics have traditionally been the primary consideration for door handle design, other factors are being taken into consideration as well. Accessibility and control of infections are key considerations when it comes to developing new handle designs. For example certain handles can be operated using a person's arm.
Latch
The latch that holds your door handle open is prone to wear and tear due to the wear and tear of use. It is easy to change the latch on your door handle. This will make a big difference in how it opens and closes.
Depending on the kind of handle you choose the latch may be a separate component or an integral part of the knob. In either case, the same process for removing and reinstalling will apply. It's easy to remove the old latch, especially in the case of doors with a "magic" button. The button is located on the left side of the knob, this little pressure-slot is what you have to press to pop the latch out of the handle and out of the latching mechanism.
If your handle isn't equipped with this magical button, the first step is to take off any cover plates that sit over the latch plate. These are usually circular or rectangular and can be removed using the help of a screwdriver. Some have a slot in which you can insert your screwdriver, while others simply snap off.
Next, you will want to loosen the two machine screws that secure the latch and inner plate to the door handle. You will need to store these shorter screws with a pointed tip in a safe location in order to reuse them in the future. Once these are off, you can take the latch plate and mechanism out of the hole in the door and set it aside.
Now you can start on the new latch. Insert the inside plate of the latch into the hole in the door and secure it using the provided hardware. Make sure the square pin that is on the interior of the latch is pointing towards the latching mechanism inside the handle and that it is lined up with the other screw chambers of the door handle. Then, secure the exterior latch plate using the screws supplied.
Strike Plate
It is not uncommon to replace a door handle if it is loose or isn't locking properly. This is typically caused by misaligned parts in the latching system, for example the strike plate being too short or has moved up or downward on the doorjamb over time. This project allows you replace your old strikeplate with a longer one, which can provide more security for your door and ensure it stays closed.
Apply some lipstick or other marking material on the bolt for the latch to check if it is the strike plate. Close the door, then try to latch it. If the mark is located below the strike plate hole, this indicates that your door isn't latching because the plate is too short. If the mark is higher or below the strikeplate hole, the strikeplate has likely been moved upwards or downwards on the doorjamb.
It is possible to install the new strikeplate in the old one using the screws included with it, based on your door. It is possible that you will need to drill holes first and then chisel some wood out to ensure a tight fit. If this is the case, you must be careful not to chisel too deeply or you could ruin the integrity of your doorjamb.
Installing a new box-style strike plate will provide the lock with a stronger hold on the doors and will require more force to open the doors. It usually requires two larger screws to anchor the strike plate in the door frame. To do this, you'll have to remove the current strike plate and then drill and chisel away the wood to create space for the new one.
This hard-to find strike plate is made from solid brass and has a thick, heavy-duty. It's made to be used on antique rim locks. This kit includes both wood screws as well as machine screws, allowing you to choose the right hardware to suit your needs. Remember that wood screws have a pointed point, and machine screws have a blunter tip.
