Chemical altered nucleic acids as well as DNA intercalators because resources regarding nanoparticle assembly.
CaCO3 crystals have been known for a long time as naturally derived and simply fabricated nano(micro)-sized materials able to effectively host and release various molecules. This review summarises the use of CaCO3 crystals as versatile carriers to host, protect and release antimicrobials, offering a strong tool to tackle antimicrobial resistance, a serious global health problem. The main methods for the synthesis of CaCO3 crystals with different properties, as well as the approaches for the loading and release of antimicrobials are presented. Finally, prospects to utilize the crystals in order to improve the therapeutic outcome and combat antimicrobial resistance are highlighted. Ultimately, this review intends to provide an in-depth overview of the application of CaCO3 crystals for the smart and controlled delivery of antimicrobial agents and aims at identifying the advantages and drawbacks as well as guiding future works, research directions and industrial applications. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an inflammatory marker which has been investigated as a prognostic indicator in post-therapeutic recurrence and survival of patients with HCC. Our aim was to review all studies that assessed the prognostic value of pre-treatment NLR in predicting patient survival, cancer recurrence, and graft survival in patients undergoing various therapies for HCC. We searched the database of PubMed and Google Scholar to review all studies that have the word "NLR" and the word "HCC." We included all studies that assessed pre-treatment NLR as a prognostic factor in predicting outcomes in HCC patients. We excluded studies that assessed the correlation between post-treatment NLR or dynamic changes in NLR after treatment and HCC outcomes in an effort to minimize the confounding effect of each treatment on NLR. We reviewed 123 studies that studied the correlation between pre-treatment NLR and patient survival, 72 studies that evaluated the correlation between pre-treatment NLR and tumor recurrence, 21 studies that evaluated the correlation between NLR and tumor behavior, and 4 studies that assessed the correlation between NLR and graft survival. We found a remarkable heterogeneity between the methods of the studies, which is likely responsible for the differences in outcomes. Dac51 The majority of the studies suggested a correlation between higher levels of pre-treatment NLR and poor outcomes. We concluded that NLR is a reliable and inexpensive biomarker and should be incorporated into other prognostic models to help determine outcomes following HCC treatment.Typical atrio-ventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia (AVNRT) can occasionally remain easily inducible after slow pathway (SP) modification in lower Triangle of Koch (TOK). Analysis of resetting response by delivering atrial premature depolarizations (APD) from various sites (TOK, right atrium, coronary sinus and left atrium) can pin-point the culprit SP serving as the antegrade limb of the tachycardia circuit. However, the maneuver is under-utilized by most centers. We describe a case where anatomical SP modification in TOK failed to cure the arrhythmia. The resetting maneuver performed subsequently, helped us to rule out leftward inferior extension of SP and suggested right inferior SP as essential part of AVNRT circuit. Further ablation was performed at M1-M2 region (on the right side) to achieve success.Exosomes represent an evolutionarily conserved signaling pathway which can act as an alarming mechanism in responses to diverse stresses, e.g. chronic inflammation activates the budding of exosomal vesicles in both immune and non-immune cells. Exosomes can contain both pro- and anti-inflammatory cargos but in chronic inflammation, exosomes mostly carry immunosuppressive cargos, e.g. enzymes and miRNAs. The aging process is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation and the accumulation of pro-inflammatory senescent cells into tissues. There is clear evidence that aging increases the number of exosomes in both the circulation and tissues. Especially, the secretion of immunosuppressive exosomes robustly increases from senescent cells. There are observations that the exosomes from senescent cells are involved in the expansion of senescence into neighbouring cells. Interestingly, the age-related exosomes contain immune suppressive cargos which enhance the immunosuppression within recipient immune cells, i.e. tissue-resident and recruited immune cells including M2 macrophages, myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC), and regulatory T cells (Treg). It seems that increased immunosuppression with aging impairs the clearance of senescent cells and their accumulation within tissues augments the aging process.Subcapsular cataracts are common phenotype of diabetic cataracts, and abnormal lens epithelial cells (LECs) under the lens capsules have been considered to involve in the pathogenesis. Our previous studies have shown that the epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), which is responsible for the LECs to lose their original polarity and tight junctions, occurs in a diabetic cataract mouse model. Autophagy is known to function in the EMT process in multiple tissues. However, the relationship between autophagy and EMT process in LECs has not yet been fully demonstrated. We found that high glucose retreatment reducing expression level of E-cadherin, an epithelial marker, but increasing that of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), a mesenchymal marker, by Western blot and immunoflurence staining assays, and increased the cell migration by Transwell assay in human lens epithelial cell line HLE-B3. High glucose retreatment also led to impairment of autophagy, representing by downregulation of Beclin, LC3II/LC3I, and reducing the number of autophagosomes. Activation of autophagy by rapamycin could prevent high glucose-induced EMT. In addition, the levels of p62 and Snail were increased in high glucose-treated HLE-B3 cells, and their interactions were demonstrated by co-immunoprecipitation and immunoflurence staining, but all these changes were attenuated by application of rapamycin. These findings delineated a novel autophagy-mediated mechanism, p62 might mediate Snail underlying high glucose-induced EMT in LECs, suggesting a potential therapeutic approach for diabetic cataract by regulating autophagy.
