To minimize the damage caused by large earthquakes, mutual assistance activities between residents and rescue victims (i.e., to support residents who cannot evacuate individually) are important. To enhance these activities, the technologies and methods for creating a Community Disaster Management Plan (CDMP), based on the quantitative evaluation of mutual assistance abilities, are required. However, the lack of a method for it is a key issue. This study aims to develop a methodology of workshops for making CDMPs by using the developed support tool by the authors to explore and promote mutual assistance activities. Through the demonstration and examination of a Community Disaster Management Plan on actual districts, the findings mentioned in this article were obtained. Moreover, the usability of this method is shown. In particular, this method is effective at revising CDMPs, and raising resident awareness on the importance of mutual assistance. The suggested method can also improve the lack of techniques involved in promoting mutual assistance.Asthma is a complex and chronic inflammatory disease of the airways, characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction, bronchospasm, and airway eosinophilia. As the pathophysiology of asthma is becoming clearer, the identification of new valuable drug targets is emerging. IL-5 is one of these such targets because it is the major cytokine supporting eosinophilia and is responsible for terminal differentiation of human eosinophils, regulating eosinophil proliferation, differentiation, maturation, migration, and prevention of cellular apoptosis. Blockade of the IL-5 pathway has been shown to be efficacious for the treatment of eosinophilic asthma. However, several other inflammatory pathways have been shown to support eosinophilia, including IL-13, the alarmin cytokines TSLP and IL-33, and the IL-3/5/GM-CSF axis. These and other alternate pathways leading to airway eosinophilia will be described, and the efficacy of therapeutics that have been developed to block these pathways will be evaluated.Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an immune-mediated, inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that usually affects children and young adults after an infection or vaccination. The presence of several conditions mimicking ADEM, added to the lack of specific biomarkers, makes diagnosis potentially hard. Prompt diagnosis is necessary to start adequate treatment to improve the clinical course and long-term outcome. Because of its heterogeneity in both clinical presentation and course, challenges remain in establishing the most appropriate therapeutic approach in each patient. The aim of this review is to provide an update on management of this disease with a focus on acute treatment and to give suggestions for future research. We showed that there are currently no guidelines that help clinicians manage ADEM and therapeutic decisions are often made on a case-by-case basis. Further studies are necessary to identify clinical, laboratory, and instrumental criteria that could be correlated with outcomes and guide clinicians in choosing when and what treatment should be given in each case.Penile cancer (PeCa) is a common disease in poor and developing countries, showing high morbidity rates. Despite the recent progress in understanding the molecular events involved in PeCa, the lack of well-characterized in vitro models precludes new advances in anticancer drug development. Here we describe the establishment of five human primary penile cancer-derived cell cultures, including two epithelial and three cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF) cells. Using high-throughput genomic approaches, we found that the epithelial PeCa derived- cells recapitulate the molecular alterations of their primary tumors and present the same deregulated signaling pathways. 6-Benzylaminopurine The differentially expressed genes and proteins identified are components of key oncogenic pathways, including EGFR and PI3K/AKT/mTOR. We showed that epithelial PeCa derived cells presented a good response to cisplatin, a common therapeutic approach used in PeCa patients. The growth of a PeCa-derived cell overexpressing EGFR was inhibited by EGFR inhibitors (cetuximab, gefitinib, and erlotinib). We also identified CAF signature markers in three PeCa-derived cells with fibroblast-like morphology, indicating that those cells are suitable models for PeCa microenvironment studies. We thus demonstrate the utility of PeCa cell models to dissect mechanisms that promote penile carcinogenesis, which are useful models to evaluate therapeutic approaches for the disease. This study aimed to identify the association between moving to a high-volume hospital and the mortality of patients with cancer living in the district. The study population comprised participants diagnosed with cancer within the past nine years (2004-2012). The final sample included 8197 patients with cancer, 3939 were males (48.1%), and 4258 were females (51.9%). A Cox proportional hazard model was used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) for death. Confounding variables including sex, age, type of social security, income level, disability, and utilization volume were incorporated into the model. Among patients with cancer living in the district, 2874 (35.1%) used healthcare services in Seoul. About 10% (n = 834) of patients died during the follow-up period. The HR for death in females (HR 0.68, 95% CI 0.58-0.81) was lower than that in males. Additionally, the HR for the death of patients using healthcare services in Seoul (HR 1.30, 95% CI 1.11-1.53) was higher than those patients who did not use healthcare services in Seoul. Among patients utilizing services in the province, wealthier patients' survival probability was significantly higher than that of others. The cause of income differences should be identified, and accessibility to medical use of low-income families should be enhanced to prevent mortality of patients from cancer disparities.Automating inspection of critical infrastructure such as sewer systems will help utilities optimize maintenance and replacement schedules. The current inspection process consists of manual reviews of video as an operator controls a sewer inspection vehicle remotely. The process is slow, labor-intensive, and expensive and presents a huge potential for automation. With this work, we address a central component of the next generation of robotic inspection of sewers, namely the choice of 3D sensing technology. We investigate three prominent techniques for 3D vision passive stereo, active stereo, and time-of-flight (ToF). The Realsense D435 camera is chosen as the representative of the first two techniques wheres the PMD CamBoard pico flexx represents ToF. The 3D reconstruction performance of the sensors is assessed in both a laboratory setup and in an outdoor above-ground setup. The acquired point clouds from the sensors are compared with reference 3D models using the cloud-to-mesh metric. The reconstruction performance of the sensors is tested with respect to different illuminance levels and different levels of water in the pipes.
