Adult ADHD Medication
If environmental modifications are not enough to help you succeed at school or work you could be able to benefit from medication. These are short or long acting, and include the family of methylphenidates (such as Ritalin) and amphetamine salts.
In adhd uk medication , stimulants are the most commonly prescribed ADHD medications. If you don't have a condition that requires an additional medication, stimulants are often prescribed first.
Stimulants
Stimulants are substances that help by boosting activity in parts of the brain that regulate attention and behaviour. They increase concentration, focus the mind and reduce the risk of impulsive behavior. They can be prescribed legally as ADHD medications. However, they are frequently taken recreationally as illicit drugs such as methamphetamine and cocaine to increase energy levels and feelings of well-being.
The most widely used stimulant for ADHD is methylphenidate. You may have heard of by the brand name Ritalin. It stimulates the brain areas that regulate attention and behavior which improves concentration and reduces hyperactive and impulsive behaviour. It is available in the form of tablets that release immediately, taken 2 or 3 times per day, or modified-release capsules which release the medication throughout the day.
Lisdexamfetamine stimulates certain regions of the brain, which enhances concentration and aids in focusing the mind. It also helps to reduce the impulsive behavior. It is usually prescribed to teenagers, adults, and children above the age of 5 when methylphenidate is not effective. Lisdexamfetamine is usually prescribed as immediate-release tablets that are taken twice or three times a day. Atomoxetine is different from the other medicines that are listed above and is available to adults, teens and children (aged 5plus) who are not able to take lisdexamfetamine or methylphenidate due to negative side effects or for other reasons. It is a selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) and increases the amount of noradrenaline found in the brain, transferring messages between brain cells to enhance concentration and control of impulses. It is taken once daily as a tablet, or an oral solution.
A number of random controlled studies and observational studies have looked at the advantages and disadvantages of the treatment for adults adhd. These studies have compared different medications with placebos or each other however, not all of them have included head-to-head trials. This study blends the results from those trials by using a technique called network meta-analysis. This is the most comprehensive analysis of ADHD to date and strengthens NICE's guidelines regarding prescribing medication for adult ADHD.
The findings indicate that a substantial proportion of people suffering from ADHD will benefit from medication. But it is important to weigh the risks and benefits of taking the medication. It is recommended to talk to a physician about this and, where appropriate you can take steps to manage the symptoms of the condition with other treatments, like treatment and lifestyle changes. It is essential to identify medical conditions like narcolepsy or sleep apnea that may cause or exacerbate ADHD symptoms. A thorough examination and history are crucial in assessing for possible causes for the symptoms. Patients who have a history of serious alcohol or drug abuse should be treated with extreme care. Referral to a specialist may be required. Patients who have had a history of developmental disorders or other serious mental health issues must be assessed more thoroughly and referred for special evaluations and tests as necessary. This could include a more detailed history of the family members of the patient, since genetic factors are known to play a role in ADHD.
