Fitting a Cat Flap
Installing a cat flap might appear daunting, but it is fairly easy to do with the proper instructions. First, decide how high you want the flap to be (on average or belly height). Note this on your door, and use the included template to help you drill.

If you have a small kitten you can prop the door open very slightly and gradually allow it to enter. Reward it each time it goes through.

Take a measurement of the door

A cat flap is a great way to allow your pet to leave and come into and out of your house as it wants. This will help keep your cat healthy by making sure that it is getting exercise and also being able to come back inside if trapped outside in bad weather, particularly in winter. It can also cut down on the amount of time you need to allow it out or in and can keep your home safe by letting you know when it has gone out.

It is crucial to make sure that the cat flap is set up correctly in order to prevent your pet from being pushed through it or escaping by other animals (e.g. dogs). It is important to measure the height of your pet's belly as well as the width of the doorway at your home to ensure the flap is at the correct height. You can alter the height of your flap if your cat is taller or smaller than average.

Then, use a spirit-level to mark the middle of the door. This is where you'll install the flap. Using the marking as a guideline, you can use an jigsaw to cut the form of the flap within the door. After you have cut the flap then sand the edges to create smooth surfaces. Make any holes that are required.

The process of fitting a cat flap isn't as complicated as you think, and it shouldn't take more than two hours for the entire job from start to completion. However, the process may be slightly more complicated when you have to install it into the frame of a uPVC or composite door because these doors come in a wide range of thicknesses that can affect the way the holes are cut and the type of door they are fixed into. We always suggest to consult with an expert if this is your first experience with glass.

Measure Your Cat

A cat flap will save you from hours of hearing your pet's cries to let it in or out. This is particularly helpful for those who work most of the day and your cat is stuck inside waiting until you get home in all weathers.

If you're planning to put a cat flap in your door it is important to measure your cat before attempting the task. It may seem like a straightforward task, but it's important to get the measurements right. Otherwise, your pet might find it difficult to use.

First, make sure your cat is calm before taking measurements. You'll need to put your cat in a place where they cannot move. Also, ensure that the measuring tape is flat and not curved against their body. You can get a precise measurement by keeping the measuring tape or the ruler flat against the body of the animal from the top to the bottom.

Once you've determined your cat's measurement and measurements, you need to look at the door to determine where to put the flap. The flap should be placed at the level of your cat's belly. This will allow them to go through the door with minimal effort. This will also avoid the flap making a lot of noise as it swings open and closed.

You will also need to take into consideration the thickness and structure of the uPVC door or composite. While all doors made of timber have a similar thickness, uPVC or composite doors are different in their overall structure. This can make fitting an enclosure for your cat more difficult as you have to make sure that the hole is the right size.

You can make use of the template included in the instructions to mark the position of the hole on the door. This will help you determine the location where the opening should be, and also to make sure the template is properly placed on the door. Using a spirit level to ensure that the template is right against the door can be extremely helpful.

Cut the Flap

You'll need to cut an opening in the door panel for your cat flap prior to you can attach it. This can be a challenging job, and it is recommended that you seek out the assistance of an expert cat flap fitter for this job should you not have the skills or experience to complete the task yourself. You can also read the instructions that come in the kit to find out how to do it properly.

You can use the height of your cat's or kitten's stomach to guide you. As a general rule put the flap around 10-15 centimeters higher than the ground. This is the average height of the stomach for cats. This way your cat can move through the flap comfortably and it will also give the other cats or neighbours who are snooping difficult time trying to get in or out.

Once you've decided the location where the cat flap needs to be located, mark the position on the door with pencil. If your kit includes the template you can place it on the door. Utilize the markings on the template to drill holes at each corner. You will then be able cut out the design of the template and replace it with your cat flap.

If you are installing your cat flap inside the form of a door made of wood or uPVC, you can do it yourself if you feel confident enough to handle using a Jigsaw. Make sure you don't cut into any of the door's mullions or vertical rails. You can use a jigsaw cut the panel into a circle or square depending on the design of your cat flap. Be patient, and don't try to force the jigsaw to cut faster.

Once the hole is made then carefully insert the cat flap into its new location and make sure that it is securely secured. If the flap has screw caps, push them onto the protruding bolts. Once cat flap in bifold doors have been installed then sand the rough edges and seal any gaps. This will block the entry of draughts into your home.

Install the Flap

If you have a basic cat flap you can leave it open and encourage your pet to go through by putting a little bit of cat food in the front of the door. Alternately, you can push the cat through with your hand or a stick. Once your pet is used to walking through the flap it should be able to go into and out as it wants and you should be able to let it out and in without to open the door for it throughout the day (and likely in all weathers).

It is possible to fit the flap onto an UPVC or glass door but it's not as simple as fitting one into a timber external door since the UPVC doors and some glass doors don't have the same thickness. This could have an enormous impact on the way you cut the flap's hole and whether the flap fits correctly after installation.

The mounting kit might include a template that shows you the best places to drill holes. If the kit does not come with a template, you can make one by yourself. When cutting, it is important to keep the jigsaw from being pushed too far enough to make a larger hole than you need in your door.

Certain cat flaps come in circular designs, which are more difficult to install. If you have a round flap, make sure that the hole is located in the correct place on your door. If not, your cat may not be able to use it, and may be locked outside for the entire day (or at night).

Certain cat flaps come with locks that allow you to determine when your cat can enter and leave. These are useful if your pet is afraid of going out in the dark or returning in the dark. They can also be helpful when you are working all day. Some locks can be used to lock entrance or exit, while others can be locked both ways. This is useful for sick or elderly cats who aren't keen to venture out in cold weather.
