ADHD Medication Names
Stimulants help treat symptoms of ADHD by increasing levels of brain chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine. They are available in immediate-release (short acting) and extended release tablets, liquids, and patches.
Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) and dextroamphetamine and dextro-amphetamine (Adderall) are examples of stimulants. Lisdexamfetamine is a different stimulant and comes in a 4-hour tablet or an extended-release capsule.
Stimulants
Stimulants for ADHD are the most commonly prescribed medications and are effective in 70 to 80% of adults and children. These drugs increase hormones such as dopamine and norepinephrine levels in the brain, which help you think more clearly, pay more attention and manage impulses. Most stimulants have a 30 minute effect. They can decrease fidgeting and interrupting and help you focus, finish tasks, and improve your relationships. adhd stimulant medication will not stop you from experiencing symptoms or adverse effects.
Long- and short-acting stimulant medications are readily available. Short-acting stimulants peak after a few hours, and require a minimum of daily dosages. Long-acting stimulants are consumed every day. Some people are prone to experiencing the sensation of a "crash" as the drug wears off causing an abrupt decrease in energy and mood or intense hunger. If you experience this, your doctor may prescribe an intermediate stimulant to fill the gap between doses, or to switch you to a more powerful medication.
Amphetamines are the most common stimulant medications for ADHD, but they also have a long history of misuse and abuse as recreational drugs or performance-enhancing substances. They are available in both prescription and over-the-counter forms, but when taken or smoked, they enter the brain quickly to produce an energy boost and an euphoria. They've been used by athletes, students truck drivers, soldiers and students. In 2017, around two percent of Canadian students reported using amphetamines for non-medical purposes.
Methylphenidate works similarly to amphetamines in that it blocks the reuptake of norepinephrine as well as dopamine in the brain. It is available in oral tablets that are immediate-release, controlled release or extended-release. They can be taken either once or twice every day. It's also sold under the brand name Focalin.
Atomoxetine is a FDA-approved drug for ADHD that increases the amount of noradrenaline that is present in your brain. It is available as tablets or capsules that can be taken once or twice daily. Atomoxetine is suitable for adults and adolescents older than 5 years old.
Other Medications for ADHD
Some people find that stimulants aren't effective or cause adverse side effects and their doctor may look at other options for ADHD. Nonstimulants (or a combination of stimulant and nonstimulant) could aid in improving your ability concentrate, stay focused and manage your emotions. They include Strattera, Tenex (which will be removed in 2023), Kapvay, and Intuniv.
