Until recently, animal behavior has been studied through close and extensive observation of individual animals and has relied on subjective assessments. Wearable technologies that allow the automation of dairy cow behavior recording currently dominate the precision dairy technology market. Wearable accelerometers provide new opportunities in animal ethology using quantitative measures of dairy cow behavior. Recent research developments indicate that quantitative measures of behavior may provide new objective on-farm measures to assist producers in predicting, diagnosing, and managing disease or injury on farms and allowing producers to monitor cow comfort and estrus behavior. These recent research developments and a large increase in the availability of wearable accelerometers have led to growing interest of both researchers and producers in this technology. However, their underlying genomic architecture has not yet been extensively characterized. Herein, we aimed to identify genomic regions associated with body, udder, and leg conformation traits recorded in 825 Murciano-Granadina goats. We genotyped this resource population using the GoatSNP50 BeadChip (Illumina Inc., San Diego, CA) and performed genome-wide association analyses using the GEMMA software. We found 2 genome-wide significant associations between markers rs268273468 [Capra hircus (CHI) 1669617700] and rs268249346 (CHI 2818321523) and medial suspensory ligament. In contrast, we did not detect any genome-wide significant associations for body and leg traits. Moreover, we found 12, 19, and 7 chromosome-wide significant associations for udder, body, and leg traits, respectively. Comparison of our data with previous studies revealed a low level of positional concordance between regions associated with morphological traits. In addition to technical factors, this lack of concordance could be due to a substantial level of genetic heterogeneity among breeds or to the strong polygenic background of morphological traits, which makes it difficult to detect genetic factors that have small phenotypic effects.The presence of acids in a lactose-containing system can affect its crystallization. The crystallization kinetics of lactose solutions were investigated as affected by lactic, citric, or phosphoric acid at a concentration of 0.05, 1, or 4% (wt/wt) as compared with that of pure lactose. The crystallization behavior of lactose was affected differently by the presence of all 3 acids and was mostly concentration dependent. The presence of 1 and 4% citric or phosphoric acid reduced the crystal yield significantly (≥18%) as compared with that of pure lactose (∼82%). Thermographic analysis of lactose crystals showed that the presence of 1% lactic, 0.05 and 1% citric, and 4% phosphoric acids in the lactose solutions induced the formation of amorphous lactose. X-Ray diffraction analysis revealed that the lactose crystallized mainly into α-lactose monohydrate, stable anhydrous α-lactose, and anhydrous crystals containing α-lactose and β-lactose in a molar ratio of 53 and 41. Average size of the lactose particles, comprising of several crystallites, declined depending on the type of the acids and their concentration, but size of a single crystallite was not altered. The findings suggested that the lactose crystallization and crystal properties are governed by the lactose-water interactions, which can be influenced by the presence of acids in a concentration-dependent manner.Milk odd- and branched-chain fatty acids (OBCFA) are largely derived from bacteria leaving the rumen, which has encouraged research on their use as biomarkers of rumen function. Targeted research has examined relationships between these fatty acids (FA) and dietary components, but interactions between the effects of lipids and other nutrients on milk OBCFA are not well characterized yet. Furthermore, factors controlling milk OBCFA in sheep are largely unknown. Thus, the present meta-analysis examined relationships between diet composition and milk OBCFA using a database compiled with lot observations from 14 trials in dairy ewes fed lipid supplements. A total of 47 lots received lipid supplements, whereas their respective controls (27 lots) were fed the same basal diets without lipid supplementation. Relationships between milk OBCFA and dietary components were first assessed through a principal component analysis (PCA) and a correlation analysis. Then, responses of milk OBCFA to variations in specific dietarynd starch (negative linear coefficients). Lipid supplementation would not largely affect these associations, supporting the potential of OBCFA as noninvasive markers of rumen function under different feeding conditions (i.e., with or without lipid supplementation). Because consumption of these FA may have nutritional benefits for humans, the use of high-fiber/low-starch rations might be recommended to maintain the highest possible content of milk OBCFA in dairy sheep.Milk yield during first lactation is an important economical trait. Age at first calving (AFC) is considered an important predictor of subsequent milk yield. In addition, both season of birth, as well as season of calving, have been shown to influence milk production, with conflicting results. Finally, higher parity of the dam has been associated with a lower performance of the offspring. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of the above-mentioned factors based on a large-scale study and to rank the most important determinants for first-lactation milk yield. Data on 3,810,678 Holstein Friesian heifers, born in Belgium and the Netherlands between 2000 and 2015, were provided by Cooperative CRV and CRV BV (Arnhem, the Netherlands) and consisted of birth dates, calving dates, and first-lactation productions. In addition, herd, sire, and dam information was provided. Linear regression models were built with herd-calving year and sire as random effects and 305-d energy-corrected milk (ECM) yield during first lactation as outcome variable.
