The sensory and locomotor functions of 3xTg-AD mice for two genders appear to be normal before 6 months, decline in fear memory afterwards. The differences between control and 3xTg-AD male mice in contextual and cued memory are robust, thus they are ideal for evaluating the effect of a treatment. Since it is costly and time consuming to obtain wildtype littermates as controls, C57BL/6N strain is suggested to be used as control mice because their baseline performance of sensorimotor functions are similar to that of 3xTg-AD mice.Studies have shown the brain's rich-club organization may underpin brain function and be associated with various brain disorders. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relation between poststroke brain functions and functional recovery versus the rich-club organization of the structural brain network of patients after first-time acute ischemic stroke. A cohort of 16 acute ischemic stroke patients (11 males) was recruited. Structural brain networks were measured using diffusion tensor imaging within 1 week and at 1, 3 and 6 months after stroke. Motor impairment was assessed using the Upper-Extremity Fugl-Meyer motor scale and activities of daily living using the Barthel Index at the same time points as MRI. The rich-club regions that were stable over the course of stroke recovery included the bilateral dorsolateral superior frontal gyri, right supplementary motor area, and left median cingulate and paracingulate gyri. The network properties that correlated with poststroke brain functions were mainly the ratio between communication cost ratio and density ratio of rich-club, feeder and local connections. The recovery of both motor functions and activities of daily living were correlated with higher normalized rich club coefficients and a shorter length of local connections within a week after stroke. The communication cost ratio of feeder connections, the length of rich-club and local connections, and normalized rich club coefficients were found to be potential prognostic indicators of stroke recovery. Our results provide additional support to the notion that different types of network connections play different roles in brain functions as well as functional recovery.Previously, we demonstrated that one single physical exercise session could positively modulate recognition memory persistence by D1/D5 activation. Here, we aim to investigate whether the effect of physical exercise on memory occurs due to the activation of both receptors, D1 and D5, or only one of them. Adult male Wistar rats were habituated on a treadmill one week before experiments. After learning session in the object recognition task, some animals received intrahippocampal infusions of the vehicle or a D1/D5 agonist (SKF 38393, 12.5 μg/μL/side), whereas others performed a single session of physical exercise on a treadmill (30 min at an intensity of 60-70% of indirect VO2 max.). Immediately after physical exercise, some animals received intrahippocampal infusions of vehicle or D1/D5 antagonist (SCH 23390, 1 μg/μL/side). Signaling pathways of D1 and D5 receptors in the hippocampus were evaluated by pharmacological activation or inactivation of protein kinases A (PKA) and C (PKC), respectively. According to previous findings, D1/D5 agonist and a single physical exercise session after learning promoted memory persistence, and D1/D5 block impaired physical exercise effect. Importantly, here we demonstrated for the first time that PKA inhibition, but not PKC, impairs the effect of acute physical exercise on memory persistence. Besides, PKA stimulation can promote its effects on memory. Therefore, we provide evidence that corroborates the idea that D1-like dopaminergic receptors, by activation of the PKA pathway, are involved in the effects of acute physical exercise on memory.This study aims to explore the effect of chronic central neuropeptide-S (NPS) treatment on gastrointestinal dysmotility and the changes of cholinergic neurons in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) of a Parkinson's disease (PD) rat model. The PD model was induced through a unilateral medial forebrain bundle (MFB) administration of the 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). Locomotor activity (LMA), solid gastric emptying (GE), and gastrointestinal transit (GIT) were measured 7 days after the surgery. NPS was daily administered (1 nmol, icv, 7 days). NPS attenuated 6-OHDA-induced α-syn (Ser129) pathology both in SN and DMV. Additionally, expression of NPSR protein was detected in gastro-projecting cells in DMV. Taken together, centrally applied NPS seems to prevent 6-OHDA-induced gastric dysmotility through a neuroprotective action on central vagal circuitry.Progestogen hypersensitivity is a rare adverse effect of endogenous and exogenous progestogens. Here, we present a case of delayed-type progestogen hypersensitivity with marked eosinophilia against etonogestrel that resolved after implant removal.Blind-end stenosis (Myer-Cotton IV) is an extreme response to airway injury, resulting in phonatory ablation and dependence on a tracheostomy. A minimally invasive airway desobstruction and stenting can be beneficial in such cases. We present 2 cases of Myer-Cotton IV stenosis that were treated with a minimally invasive desobstruction using a hybrid (endoscopic-surgical) approach followed by the placement of a silicone T-tube.
