The Most Effective ADHD Medication For Adults
Most ADHD medications are classified into two categories: stimulants or non-stimulants. The stimulants such as methylphenidate (Provigil) and amphetamines function by enhancing the activity of parts of the brain that control the behaviour and attention.
Non-stimulants, such as guanfacine atomoxetine, and clonidine, are slower than stimulants, however they can help improve concentration and attention, as well as impulsivity. They also appear to decrease anxiety which is often a comorbidity of ADHD in adults.
Stimulants
The first drug that doctors choose to treat ADHD is stimulant medication. However, these medications don't work for everyone and they can have bad side effects for some people. Nonstimulant medications take longer to take effect, however they can improve attention span or impulsivity in certain adults. ADHD is best treated with an interdisciplinary approach of behavioral therapy and medication.
The use of medication is 70%-80% effective for treating ADHD in adults. Medications are only part of the treatment. Many people also discover that lifestyle changes and skill training can help. It is important to inform your doctor about any concerns or side effects you have from the medication to allow them to alter your dosage if necessary.
Amphétamines and methylphenidates are stimulant medications. Methylphenidates is the most common medication for ADD/ADHD. adhd medication list are available in different strengths forms, dosages, and forms that include chewable, liquid, tablet and capsule. The majority of adults and children are safe to take them. However, those suffering from glaucoma or advanced arteriosclerosis or heart disease-related symptoms, or who have recently taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are not recommended to take them.
Amphetamines have similar effects as methylphenidates, but they are more powerful. They're generally less likely to cause severe adverse effects, and are more effective than methylphenidates at the reduction of symptoms of ADHD. They're also more likely to cause addiction and abuse, hence they're classified as Schedule I drugs.
Both kinds of stimulants may cause some unpleasant side effects, including stomach upsets, headaches, jitters, trouble sleeping, and loss of appetite. The majority of these side effects are minor and last only a few weeks.
Nonstimulant drugs
Nonstimulant ADHD medications take longer to work than stimulants. They might not be as effective however, they can improve inattention and reduce irritability. They work by increasing the brain chemicals that regulate emotions and focus the attention. There are a variety of these medications, and some doctors prescribe them in conjunction with stimulants to achieve the most effective results.
Strattera (atomoxetine), an SNRI that increases the levels of norepinephrine within the brain, which reduces the tendency to be impulsive and inattention. It took a long time to become FDA-approved for treating ADHD, but it's been shown to be helpful in adults. Guanfacine (Intuniv) is a blood pressure medicine that also increases levels of norepinephrine and decreasing impulsiveness. It's a little slower to begin its work than methylphenidate or amphetamines, and it has a more "no-fly" impact on the brain. Other medications that boost norepinephrine levels are Wellbutrin/Zyban (bupropion) and Effexor (venlafaxine). The FDA has not yet approved these drugs to treat ADHD. However they could help certain people. Antidepressants can also be used to treat ADHD as they increase the levels of brain chemicals that affect the mood and behavior.
