Inferior RNFL thickness was reduced in PD-CI compared with PD-NC patients. Logistic regression analysis found that inferior RNFL thickness was independently associated with PD-CI cases (odds ratio = 0.923,
= 0.014). Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed that the RNFL-involved combined model provided a high accuracy in screening cognitive deficiency in PD cases (area under the curve = 0.85,
< 0.001).

Reduced RNFL thickness especially in the inferior sector is independently associated with PD-CI patients. Our study present new perspectives into verifying possible indicators for neuropathological processes or disease severity in Parkinsonians with cognitive dysfunction.

Atherosclerosis is considered a crucial component in the pathogenesis of decreased cognitive function, as occurs in vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). Inflammation and the immune response play a significant role in the development of many chronic diseases. Immunoglobulin G (IgG)
-glycosylation has been implicated in the development of a variety of diseases by affecting the anti-inflammatory and proinflammatory responses of IgG. This study aimed to investigate the association between IgG
-glycosylation and VCI in a sample of patients with atherosclerosis through a case-control study.

We recruited a total of 330 patients with atherosclerosis to participate in this case-control study, including 165 VCI patients and 165 sex- and age-matched participants with normal cognitive function. The plasma IgG
-glycans of participants were separated by ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit was used to determine the corresponding serum inflammatory factors. related with VCI-related inflammatory factors (
= 0.272,
= 0.004). The combined AUC value (AUC
= 0.885) of 7 initial glycans and inflammatory factors was higher than their respective values (AUC
= 0.818, AUC
= 0.773).

The findings indicate that decreased sialylation and galactosylation and increased bisecting GlcNAc reflected by IgG
-glycans might affect the occurrence of VCI in patients with atherosclerosis though promoting the proinflammatory function of IgG. IgG
-glycans may serve as potential biomarkers to distinguish VCI in individuals with atherosclerosis.
The findings indicate that decreased sialylation and galactosylation and increased bisecting GlcNAc reflected by IgG N-glycans might affect the occurrence of VCI in patients with atherosclerosis though promoting the proinflammatory function of IgG. IgG N-glycans may serve as potential biomarkers to distinguish VCI in individuals with atherosclerosis.Urine-based formaldehyde has been reported to be a potential biomarker for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, there is a lack of research about the correlation between urine formaldehyde and cognitive abilities in the clinical spectrum of AD, especially the preclinical period. The relationship of urine formaldehyde with APOE genotype, brain Aβ status and plasma pathological markers in AD are also not clear. This study intends to explore the correlation between urine formaldehyde and cognitive abilities throughout the AD continuum, to evaluate the role of APOE genotype and Aβ accumulation on urine formaldehyde, and further to clarify the relationship between urine formaldehyde level and AD plasma pathological markers. We recruited 72 cognitively normal controls (NC), 110 subjective cognitive decline (SCD), 140 objectively defined subtle cognitive decline (Obj-SCD), 171 mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 136 AD dementia participants. Next, we collected the data of clinical materials, neuropsychological examination, APOE genotyping, urine formaldehyde concentration, 18F-florbetapir PET imaging and plasma biomarkers. Compared with NC, Obj-SCD and MCI groups, the level of urine formaldehyde was found to be significantly upregulated in SCD group. In addition, the level of urine formaldehyde was significantly higher in AD group compared to both NC and MCI groups. Further subgroup analysis showed that, the level of urine formaldehyde was higher in APOE ε4+ subgroup compared to APOE ε4- subgroup in both NC and AD groups. There was no difference in urine formaldehyde level between the brain Aβ+ subgroup and Aβ- subgroup in each group. In addition, regression analysis showed urine formaldehyde level was correlated with gender, plasma Aβ42 and p-Tau181/T-tau. The dynamic change of urine formaldehyde in the AD continuum could be used as a potential biomarker, and combined with comprehensive cognitive evaluation could become a useful method to distinguish SCD from NC and Obj-SCD, and to distinguish MCI from AD.Evidence suggests the pivotal role of vitamin D in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) via its effects on the brain. Gender differences exist in both depression and vitamin D level. Our objective was to investigate the association between gender, vitamin D, clinical manifestations, and functional network connectivity in a large sample of MDD patients and healthy controls. Resting-state functional MRI data were collected from 122 patients and 119 controls, with independent component analysis adopted to examine large-scale inter- and intranetwork functional connectivity. Serum concentration of vitamin D (SCVD) and clinical manifestations were also assessed. MDD patients exhibited lower SCVD than controls in females but not males. Moreover, we identified a female-specific association between lower SCVD and poorer cognitive performance. Concurrently, MDD-related functional network connectivity changes were correlated with SCVD in females as well as depression and anxiety symptoms in female patients. KRpep-2d Remarkably, MDD- and SCVD-related functional network connectivity alterations mediated the associations between SCVD and cognition in females. Aside from providing evidence for a female-specific neurobiological mechanism whereby low vitamin D might contribute to MDD and its associated clinical characteristics, our findings inform a novel conceptualization that adjuvant vitamin D supplementation therapy may yield clinical benefits in improving treatment outcomes in female patients with MDD.Objectives This study was aimed to investigate the gender-related differences of regional cerebral glucose metabolism in healthy people along the age using 18F-FDG PET/CT. Methods We recruited 344 healthy volunteers, including 217 males and 127 females (age range 40-89 years old). All subjects underwent fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose(18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET). All the data were divided into four groups for every 10 years old. Each participant was carefully screened from PET, MR, and other examinations in order to exclude the abnormalities, such as neurodegenerative or psychiatric disorders, alcohol/abuse, cerebral vascular disorders, metabolic diseases like diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidism, and other systemic malignancies. The 40-50 years old group was set as the baseline group. Statistical parametric mapping (SPM) analysis was employed to illustrate the differences among groups. Results Compared to the baseline group, whether in a cohort or different gender groups, the decrease of brain glucose metabolism was shown in the bilateral frontal lobe, anterior cingulate gyrus, and the bilateral temporal lobe. In males, the regions of decreased metabolism were bilateral frontal lobe, caudate nucleus, and cingulate gyrus, whereas that of females were left occipital lobe, cerebellum, and the thalamus. However, the overall decrease of brain metabolism in men and women began from the age of 60s, an aggravated decrease from 70s was only observed in males. Conclusion (1) An obviously decreased brain metabolism was found from 60 years old, especially in the bilateral frontal lobe, bilateral temporal lobe, and inferior cingulate gyrus; (2) We found specific brain metabolic differences between genders, including the caudate nucleus region in males and the occipital lobe region in females; and (3) The aging trend is different between genders.Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) is an episodic memory helpful measure to detect changes associated with abnormal aging. There is a lack of RAVLT validation and normalization studies in Spain. The aim was to determine its psychometric properties and explore long-term forgetting (LTF) performance through 1-week delayed recall under three different modes of administration. The RAVLT was administered to 602 cognitively healthy volunteers, aged between 41 and 65 years, of whom 251 completed the LTF assessment. Findings reveal a factorial structure of four components, with satisfactory goodness of fit, and adequate convergent and divergent validity. We also demonstrated the differential effect of three methodologies used in LTF assessment, supporting that test expectancy positively influences long-term storage. Finally, normative data were generated according to age, sex, and education. The test, including the LTF measure, is a promising tool to estimate memory in middle-aged adults and develop predictive brain aging models.Several lines of evidence suggest that older adults (aged 65+) sharply increased their cannabis use over the last decade, highlighting a need to understand the effects of cannabis in this age group. Pre-clinical models suggest that cannabinoids affect the brain and cognition in an age-dependent fashion, having generally beneficial effects on older animals and deleterious effects on younger ones. However, there is little research on how cannabis affects the brains of older adults or how older adults differ from younger adults who use cannabis. Resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) measures provide sensitive metrics of age-related cognitive decline. Here we compared rsFC in older adults who are either regular users of cannabis or non-users. We found stronger connectivity between sources in the hippocampus and parahippocampal cortex, and targets in the anterior lobes of the cerebellum in older adult cannabis users relative to non-users. A similar pattern of strengthened connectivity between hippocampal and cerebellar structures was also present in 25-35 year old non-users in comparison to 60-88 year old non-users. These findings suggest that future studies should examine both the potential risks of cannabinoids, as well as a potential benefits, on cognition and brain health for older adults.Presently, there is increasing interest in rare PSP (progressive supranuclear palsy) variants, including PSP-PGF (PSP-progressive gait freezing), PSP-PI (PSP-postural instability), PSP-OM (PSP-ocular motor dysfunction), PSP-C (PSP-predominant cerebellar ataxia), PSP-CBS (PSP-corticobasal syndrome), PSP-SL (PSP-speech/language disorders), and PSP-PLS (PSP-primary lateral sclerosis). Diagnosis of these subtypes is usually based on clinical symptoms, thus thorough examination with anamnesis remains a major challenge for clinicians. The individual phenotypes often show great similarity to various neurodegenerative diseases and other genetic, autoimmune, or infectious disorders, manifesting as PSP-mimicking syndromes. At the current stage of knowledge, it is not possible to isolate a specific marker to make a definite ante-mortem diagnosis. The purpose of this review is to discuss recent developments in rare PSP phenotypes and PSP-like syndromes.
