Here we studied decision biases in 17 people with unilateral medial prefrontal cortex damage and a rare patient with bilateral ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) lesions. Participants learned to choose which of two options was most likely to win, and then bet money on the outcome. Thus, good performance required not only selecting the best option, but also the amount to bet. Healthy people were biased by their previous bet, as well as by the unchosen option's value. Unilateral medial prefrontal lesions reduced these biases, leading to more rational decisions. Bilateral vmPFC lesions resulted in more strategic betting, again with less bias from the previous trial, paradoxically improving performance overall. Together, the results suggest that vmPFC normally imposes contextual biases, which in healthy people may actually be suboptimal in some situations.Clinical studies described emotional and social behaviour alterations in patients with cerebellar diseases, proposing a role of specific cerebello-cerebral circuits in social cognition. However, for a long time these difficulties were underestimated, and no studies have addressed the correlation between social cognition deficits and topography of the cerebellar damage. The present study aims to investigate the social cognition impairment and the neuroanatomical alterations in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) and to analyze their relationship. To this purpose a social cognition battery composed by three tests, and a MRI protocol were administered to 13 SCA2 patients and 26 healthy subjects. The pattern of gray matter (GM) atrophy was analyzed by voxel-based morphometry, and the GM volumes of each altered area were correlated with the behavioral scores to investigate anatomo-functional relationships. One study well had extremely high initial arsenic (1550 µg/L) that substantially decreased after 15 months (5.2 µg/L). The drilling and development of the study well were typical and ordinary; nothing observable indicated the very high initial arsenic concentration. We hypothesized that oxidation of arsenic-containing sulfides (which lowers pH) combined with low pH dissolution of arsenic-bearing Fe (oxyhydr)oxides caused the very high arsenic concentration. Geochemical equilibrium considerations and modeling supported our hypothesis. Groundwater equilibrium redox conditions are poised at the Fe(III)(s)/Fe(II)(aq) stability boundary, indicating arsenic-bearing Fe (oxyhydr)oxide mineral sensitivity to pH and redox changes. Changing groundwater geochemistry can have negative implications for home water treatment (e.g., reduced arsenic removal efficiency, iron fouling), which can lead to ongoing but unrecognized hazard of arsenic exposure from domestic well water. Our results may inform arsenic mobilization processes and geochemical sensitivity in similarly complex aquifers in Southeast Asia and elsewhere.Cu-based SAPO-18, SAPO-18/34 intergrowth and SAPO-34 zeolites were applied for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by ammonia (NH3-SCR) catalysts. Comprehensive characterization results revealed that the SAPO-18/34 with higher amount and strength of acid sites could facilitate the generation of more isolated copper ions (Cu2+ and Cu+) and suppress the formation of CuOx, which might account for the fact that intergrowth crystal structure of Cu-SAPO-18/34 exhibited higher fresh NH3-SCR activity, more robust hydrothermal durability and better SO2-resistance ability than that Cu-SAPO-18 and Cu-SAPO-34. In situ DRIFTS results provided the formation of reaction intermediates, such as -NH2, NH4+, NO3-, NO2-, etc. Eley-Rideal (E-R) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) reaction mechanisms were both involved in Cu-based SAPO-18 and SAPO-18/34 intergrowth zeolites, but the L-H mechanism dominated the NH3-SCR reaction, in addition, Cu-SAPO-34 only followed "L-H" mechanism.For improving the understanding of anaerobic degradation mechanism of fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs), the degradation of a representative FQs, levofloxacin (LEV), by six enriched anaerobic consortia were explored in this study. The effect of sulfate and nitrate as the electron acceptor and glucose as the carbon source on LEV anaerobic degradation were investigated. Addition of glucose and nitrate alone deteriorated LEV removal from 36.5% to 32.7% and 29.1%, respectively. Addition of sulfate slightly improved LEV removal to 39.6%, while simultaneous addition of glucose and sulfate significantly enhanced LEV removal to 53.1%.
