6%) was common. Women (84.8% vs. 74.9% of men, p = < 0.001) and patients younger than 65years (84.4% vs. 77.2% of patients > 65 y, p = 0.002) sought dietary advice more often. Support of the immune system was the main reason for DS use (26.4%) and a relevant number of patients (49.6%) reported to have changed their dietary habits following cancer diagnosis.
DS use is common among patients with cancer treated in an ambulatory setting. This finding should encourage oncologists to implement detailed questioning about DS use and dietary habits to prevent potential interactions and offer substantial advice.

To curb the escalated rate of poaching, high numbers of oil and meat seizures are recovered with subsequent convictions by the law enforcement agencies. In this connection, we report a case where suspected animal oil was confiscated by the forest official of West Bengal. Pepstatin A in vivo We extracted DNA and successfully amplified partial fragments of Cytb and 16S rRNA mitochondrial genes. The generated sequences identified that the seized oil belonged to the Ganges river dolphin (Platanista gangetica) which is protected as Schedule I under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 of India and listed as "Endangered" under IUCN and APPENDIX I in CITES. In routine case work analysis, oil samples are not preferred for forensic DNA investigation due to low DNA yield and presence of inhibitors or contaminants leading to high failure rate. However, the present study generates hope for identifying species from seized animal oil and supports law enforcement in successful prosecution of the case.
The mitochondrial 18-kDa translocator protein (TSPO) is expressed by activated microglia and positron emission tomography enables the measurement of TSPO levels in the brain. Findings in schizophrenia have shown to vary depending on the outcome measure used and this discrepancy in TSPO results could be explained by lower non-displaceable binding (V
) in schizophrenia, which could obscure increases in specific binding. In this study, we have used the TSPO ligand XBD173 to block the TSPO radioligand [
C]-PBR28 and used an occupancy plot to quantify V
in patients with schizophrenia.
A total of 7 patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia were recruited for this study. Each patient received two separate PET scans with [
C]PBR28, one at baseline and one after the administration of the TSPO ligand XBD173. All patients were high-affinity binders (HABs) for the TSPO gene. We used an occupancy plot to quantify the non-displaceable component (V
) using 2TCM kinetic estimates with and without vascular correcti. These results suggest that changes in non-specific binding between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls do not account for discrepant PET findings in this disorder.
Synovial sampling can be used in the diagnosis of peri-prosthetic joint infection (PJI). The purpose of this study was to establish the role of simultaneous image-guided synovial aspiration and biopsy (SAB) during an initial 2-year experience at our institution.
Retrospective review of consecutive SABs performed during 2014-2016 at a tertiary referral musculoskeletal centre. Radiological SAB microbiology culture results were compared with intra-operative surgical samples or multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting outcome at 1-year follow-up if surgery was not undertaken. Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of synovial aspiration (SA), synovial biopsy (SB) and simultaneous SAB were calculated.
103 patients (46 male, 57 female) totalling 111 procedures were analysed with mean age 65years (range 31-83). Image-guided synovial procedures were performed on 52 (46.9%) hip and 59 (53.1%) knee joint prostheses. The mean combined sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for the entire cohort was 72.6%, 96.9% and 90%,f diagnostic accuracy.
This in situ study aimed to determine and compare the chlorhexidine (CHX) retention in the oral cavity after the application of different CHX pharmaceutical regimens.
Five volunteers used different CHX treatment regimens including mouth rinses, dental spray and toothpaste gel. After the application of the different CHX regimens, 2-μl samples were taken from saliva and buccal mucosa pellicle as well as the dental pellicle samples formed on standardized enamel surfaces. Sample collection was conducted at six time points within 12 h. Retention of CHX was measured using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry.
CHX retention values in the oral mucosa pellicle were significantly higher than those in saliva. CHX remained in the mucosal pellicle at microgrammes per millilitre levels for 12 h after mouth rinsing, 10 h after spray application and 2 h after using the toothpaste. CHX was detected in the dental pellicle for at least 12 h after application of mouth rinsing and spray. Retention of CHX after mouth rinsing or spray application was significantly higher than the retention after using toothpaste.
Oral mucosa was the favourable site for CHX retention. Higher mouth rinse concentration and longer rinsing time produced a slight increase in CHX retention. CHX spray provided considerable retention values, whereas toothpaste gel delivered the lowest retention after application. MALDI-TOF was a sensitive method with excellent limits of quantification for CHX detection.
