ADHD Medication Names
Stimulants help treat symptoms of ADHD by increasing levels of the brain chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine. They are available in immediate-release (short acting) and extended release tablets, liquids and patches.
Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) and dextroamphetamine as well as dextro-amphe (Adderall) are examples of stimulants. Lisdexamfetamine comes as a four-hour capsule or a tablet.
Stimulants
The most popular treatment for ADHD is stimulants. They work well in 70 to 80% adults and children. These drugs increase hormones such as dopamine and norepinephrine levels inside the brain, allowing you to think clearly, pay attention to and control impulses. The majority of stimulants work within 30 minutes. They can decrease the amount of interruptions and fidgeting. They can also assist you in focusing, finishing tasks, and improve your relationships. They will not prevent you from suffering symptoms or adverse effects.
Stimulant medicines are available in both short- and long-acting doses. Short-acting drugs peak after a few hours and require a minimum of three daily doses, whereas long-acting medications are only taken once per day. Some sufferers experience a "crash" as the drug wears off, leading to a sudden drop in mood and energy, or an intense hunger. If this occurs your doctor may prescribe an intermediate stimulant or switch you to a longer-acting drug.
Amphetamines are the most common stimulant medications for ADHD, but they also have a long history of misuse and abuse as recreational drugs or performance-enhancing substances. They are available in both prescription and over-the-counter forms, but when taken or smoked, they reach the brain quickly and produce a rush of energy and feelings of euphoria. Students, athletes, truckers and soldiers have abused these substances. In adhd medications for adults , about two percent of Canadian students reported using amphetamines for recreational purposes.
Methylphenidate is similar to amphetamines in that it blocks the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. It comes in immediate-release extended-release and controlled-release oral tablets taken once or twice per day. Focalin is also the brand name under which it's sold.
Atomoxetine is an FDA-approved ADHD medication, increases the noradrenaline levels of your brain. add adhd medications in a capsule or tablet that can be taken once or twice a day. Atomoxetine is approved for use in adults and adolescents over the age of 5.
Other Medications for ADHD
Some people find that stimulants do not work or cause unpleasant side effects, so their doctor may try other medications for ADHD. Nonstimulants (or a combination of stimulant and nonstimulant) can help improve your ability to focus, stay on task and control your emotions. These include Strattera, Tenex (which will be removed in 2023), Kapvay, and Intuniv.
It can take time to determine the best ADHD medication for your child or you. Be patient and work with your doctor to determine the medication, dosage and schedule that work best for you. This chart will help you remember some of the names used by popular ADHD medications. These include stimulants like Adderall and Vyvanse and non-stimulants such as Strattera.
