Pada awal penemuannya, obat diberi nama sesuai dengan struktur molekulnya. Nama kimia ini biasanya kompleks, terlalu panjang dan sukar diingat. Penamaan obat bertujuan agar obat lebih mudah diingat. Penamaan ini terbagi menjadi dua; nama generik dan nama dagang.
Nama generik adaah nama resmi suatu zat yang telah ditetapkan dalam Farmakope Indonesia serta International Non-propietary Names (INN) dari WHO. Nama generik ini ditetapkan untuk obat-obatan yang mengandung zat tunggal.
Contohnya,
nama kimianya Aethacridini Lactas, nama generiknya Rivanol.
Nama kimianya Acidum Acetylsalicylicum, nama generiknya Asetosal.
Nama dagang adalah nama yang diberikan oleh pabrik dan telah terdaftar di Departemen Kesehatan. Neama dagang juga dikenal dengan sebutan merek.
Contohnya, nama dagangnya Ponstan, nama generiknya Asam Mefenamat.
Di kemasan obat, biasanya nama generik tertera lebih kecil dari nama dagangnya.
Misalnya,
Nama dagangnya Betadine, nama generiknya Povidone Iodine.
Nama generik = nama zatnya
Nama dagang = merek jualnya
Obat disebut sebagai obat generik jika isinya cuma satu macam zat aktif saja.
