Decompressive hemicraniectomy (DH) reduces mortality of large middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory infarcts. Survivors are at high risk of poststroke seizures (PSSs). This study aims to describe the incidence of PSSs, to identify associated factors, and to assess their impact on long-term outcomes.
We included consecutive patients who underwent DH for large MCA infarcts from May 2005 to December 2019 at Lille University Hospital. Patients were followed up at 3months, 1 year, and 3years. We analysed (i) the incidence and associated factors of early onset PSSs (EPSSs) with logistic regression models; (ii) the incidence and associated factors of late onset PSSs (LPSSs) in survivors at 7days with a univariate Cox proportional hazard regression model for interval-censored data; and (iii) the impact of PSSs (EPSSs and LPSSs) on mortality with univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models and modified Rankin Scale at 1 and 3years, with univariate and adjusted multivariate ordinal logistic regression analyses.
Of 248 patients (150 men, 60.5%; mean age = 50.4 ± 9.6years), 106 (42.7%) presented PSSs (six inaugural seizures, 22 EPSSs, 78 LPSSs) during follow-up. The PSS cumulative incidence was 12.3% at 7days, 24.9% at 3months, 49.8% at 1years, and 54.8% at 3years. No predictor was significantly associated with either EPSSs or LPSSs. PSSs did not significantly impact mortality and long-term functional outcome.

To study the effectiveness of public health interventions in preventing Opisthorchis viverrini (OV) re-infection in high-prevalence areas of Thailand.
68 people from Sisaket, the province with the second-highest prevalence in Thailand, who tested positive for OV eggs in faeces and took praziquantel before the start of the study, participated. 34 participants were allocated to the experimental group, which received a 12-week public health intervention based on the self-efficacy theory and group process between July and October 2018. The control group received the usual services. Data were collected using a questionnaire with a reliability of 0.84. Faecal examinations using the formalin-ether concentration technique were conducted before and after the experiment. The re-infection rate was analysed after the experimental 12weeks and after one year. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including paired t-test and independent t-test, were employed for data analysis.

To investigate whether Nd exposure affects learning and memory, in this study female ICR mice were exposed to nano Nd2 O3 via intranasal instillation at doses of 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg body weight, daily for 45 days. According to Morris water maze data, learning and memory parameters were significantly reduced in the 150 mg/kg nano-Nd2 O3 group than the sham control. Furthermore, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy analysis revealed that Nd levels were significantly higher in the hippo campus of the 100 and 150 mg/kg exposed group than the sham control; however, no significant differences were observed in the hippocampal histopathology between these groups. see more Furthermore, reactive oxygen species were elevated in hippocampal tissues of experimental groups than the sham control, 447.3 in high dose group and 360.0 in control group; however, malondialdehyde levels were significantly increased and superoxide dismutase activities were decreased only in mice exposed to 100 and 150 mg/kg Nd2 O3 . Establishing predictive pre-clinical models would allow for more accurate and practical immunotherapeutic drug development. Mouse models are extensively used as in vivo system for biomedical research. However, due to the significant differences between rodents and human, it is impossible to translate most of the findings from mouse models to human. Pharmacological development and advancing personalized medicine using patient-derived xenografts relies on producing mouse models in which murine cells and genes are substituted with their human equivalent. Humanized mice (HM) provide a suitable platform to evaluate xenograft growth in the context of a human immune system. In this review, we discussed recent advances in the generation and application of HM models. We also reviewed new insights into the basic mechanisms, pre-clinical evaluation of onco-immunotherapies, current limitations in the application of these models as well as available improvement strategies.
