Despite the popularity of this ERP component in studies of reward processing, knowledge about the role of state-related influences on the ∆RewP is limited. The present study examined whether ∆RewP amplitudes may differ based on when during the day they are assessed and whether age or sex would moderate this link. Participants were 188 children between the ages of 7 and 11 (47.3% female) without a lifetime history of a major depressive disorder or any anxiety disorder recruited from the community. Children completed the Doors task during which continuous electroencephalography was recorded to isolate the ∆RewP. To better isolate this ERP component from other temporally or spatially overlapping ERPs, we used temporospatial principal component analysis. We found that time of day (ToD) differences in the ∆RewP amplitude varied based on children's age. Specifically, older, compared to younger, children exhibited stronger responses to gains versus losses between 1115 a.m. and 1230 p.m. and after around 515 p.m. Further, these age-related differences appeared to be driven specifically by older children's reduced neural responsiveness to losses. The findings have methodological implications by highlighting the importance of accounting for the ToD at which ∆RewP-focused study sessions are conducted as well as for demographic characteristics of the participants, such as their age. © 2020 Society for Psychophysiological Research.Resistance to β-lactam antibacterials is commonly associated with the production of the serine β-lactamases (SBLs) and/or metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs). Although clinically useful inhibitors for the SBLs have been developed, no equivalent inhibitors are available for the MBLs, which can hydrolyze almost all β-lactam antibiotics, including the so-called "last resort" carbapenems. It is still a challenging task to develop a clinically useful inhibitor that should be broad-spectrum targeting multiple clinically relevant MBL enzymes that differ in their active site features. This review provides a detailed description of interaction modes of substrates and small-molecule inhibitors with various MBL enzymes and highlights the importance of metal- and "anchor residue"-binding features to achieve broad-spectrum MBL inhibition. Recently emerging active site interference strategies include metal ion deprivation, metal ion replacement, and cysteine modification as challenging, but worth experimenting directions for inhibitor development. The metalloenzyme selectivity, metal-binding pharmacophore, and cellular permeability and accumulation should be properly considered in the further development of clinically useful inhibitors to combat MBL-mediated antibacterial resistance. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Arterial elasticity is an important indicator of risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). It is influenced by both gradual vessel wall damage due to aging and disease and vascular tone that responds, at the moment, to system loading. Measuring changes in arterial elasticity are critical to early detection of CVD but can be time and resource intensive. This study proposes and tests a new method to approximate arterial elasticity from heart rate variability (HRV). ECG and pulse were simultaneously recording in 71 young healthy adults during three rhythmical sighing tasks paced at 0.02, 0.033, and 0.066 Hz. We evaluated arterial elasticity by measuring the reaction of pulse transit time (PTT) and RRI to each task specifically at the pacing frequency. The goal of the study was to describe our method, ground the methodology in current theory and mechanisms, and scientifically justify and validate this method by assessing differences in arterial elasticity in groups of healthy adults who differed in drinking behaviors. The amplitude PTT and HR oscillation responses at the pacing frequency were significantly correlated only when sighing was paced at 0.066 Hz. Both amplitudes also significantly correlated with power in the very low-frequency range of the baseline HRV spectrum. Abnormalities in these measures were observed among binge drinking healthy adults compared to non-drinkers and social drinkers. These preliminary results support using the HRV response to paced 0.066 Hz sighing as a correlate of arterial elasticity and warrant further study. © 2020 Society for Psychophysiological Research.Outbreaks of an infectious disease affecting cultured white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) were investigated. Clinical signs included erratic swimming, arching of the back and mortality. Necropsy findings included poorly demarcated yellow to dark-red and friable lesions in the epaxial muscle, ulcerative skin lesions and haemorrhages in the swim bladder and coelomic wall. Histological evaluation revealed areas of necrotizing and heterophilic myositis with aggregates of bacterial cocci. The lumen of blood vessels in the dermis, under ulcerated areas, and in the posterior kidney, was occluded by fibrin thrombi. selleck Aggregates of Gram-positive cocci were observed in the muscle lesions and within the fibrin thrombi in the dermis and kidney. Genetically homogeneous Streptococcus iniae strains were recovered from affected fish from different outbreaks. The isolates shared high degree of similarity at gene locus (gyrB) with previously characterized S. iniae from cultured fish in California, confirming the emergence of this particular strain of S.
