The percentage of patients in the PVAC group with ≥3 reconnected PVs was significantly higher compared with CB patients (56 patients (66%) vs. 17 patients (26%), p less then 0.0001), while the percentage of patients with no PV reconnection was comparably low in PVAC and CB patients (7 and 8%, respectively). CTs were most frequently reconnected after PVAC PVI (94%) and left superior PVs after CB ablation (67%), respectively. CONCLUSIONS The number of patients with recurrent AF and PV reconnection(s) at redo PVI was comparably high between both groups. However, the extent and distribution of PV reconnections was different in many aspects, indicating more stable atrial lesions after CB PVI compared with PVAC technology.BACKGROUND The Sackin indexS of a rooted phylogenetic tree, defined as the sum of its leaves' depths, is one of the most popular balance indices in phylogenetics, and Sackin's paper (Syst Zool 21225-6, 1972) is usually cited as the source for this index. However, what Sackin actually proposed in his paper as a measure of the imbalance of a rooted tree was not the sum of its leaves' depths, but their "variation". This proposal was later implemented as the variance of the leaves' depths by Kirkpatrick and Slatkin in (Evolution 471171-81, 1993), where they also posed the problem of finding a closed formula for its expected value under the Yule model. Nowadays, Sackin's original proposal seems to have passed into oblivion in the phylogenetics literature, replaced by the index bearing his name, which, in fact, was introduced a decade later by Sokal. RESULTS In this paper we study the properties of the variance of the leaves' depths, V, as a balance index. Firstly, we prove that the rooted trees with n leaves and mver their variance V(T) as a balance index, because the latter does not seem to capture correctly the notion of balance of large bifurcating rooted trees. But it is still a valid and useful shape index.BACKGROUND Hypoxia is an important environmental stressor in aquatic ecosystems, with increasingly impacts on global biodiversity. Benthic communities are the most sensitive parts of the coastal ecosystem to eutrophication and resulting hypoxia. As a filter-feeding organism living in the seafloor sediment, Ruditapes philippinarum represents an excellent "sentinel" species to assess the quality of marine environment. In order to gain insight into the molecular response and acclimatization mechanisms to hypoxia stress in marine invertebrates, we examined hypoxia-induced changes in immune-related gene expression and gene pathways involved in hypoxia regulation of R. philippinarum. RESULTS We investigated the response of the Manila clam R. philippinarum to hypoxia under experimental conditions and focused on the analysis of the differential expression patterns of specific genes associated with hypoxia response by RNA-seq and time course qPCR analysis. A total of 75 genes were captured significantly differentiallyical processes.BACKGROUND Previous studies have found that impaired global myocardial systolic strain is associated with cardiovascular events in T2DM patients. However, the effect of hypertension (HT) on left atrial (LA), right ventricular (RV) and left ventricular (LV) myocardial deformation in hypertensive T2DM patients has not been fully studied by cardiac magnetic resonance feature tracking (CMR-FT). Our aim was to assess LA, RV and LV strain in T2DM patients with T2DM-HT and without hypertension using CMR-FT and to determine the underlying relationships with clinical parameters. Selumetinib in vivo METHODS A total of 27 T2DM patients, 23 T2DM-HT patients and 31 controls were studied. LA, LV and RV strain was evaluated using CMR-FT. The clinical and biochemical parameters of the patients were collected. RESULTS The T2DM patients had reduced LA global circumferential strain (LAGCS), radial strain (LAGRS), longitudinal strain (LAGLS) and right ventricular longitudinal strain (RVGLS) compared with the controls (LAGCS 27.2 ± 2.1% vs 33.5 ± 2.4%; LAGRS - 28.6 ± 1.1% vs - 31.9 ± 1.3%; LAGLS 24.3 ± 1.3% vs 31.4 ± 1.5; RVGLS - 21.4 ± 1.2% vs - 26.3 ± 1.1%, p less then 0.05 for all). The T2DM-HT patients had greater LAGCS, LAGRS and LAGLS than the T2DM patients (LAGCS 40.4 ± 3.8% vs 27.2 ± 2.1%; LAGRS - 36.8 ± 2.0% vs - 28.6 ± 1.1%; LAGLS 32.3 ± 2.4% vs 24.3 ± 1.3%, p less then 0.05 for all). In the diabetic patients, LAGCS was associated with microalbuminuria levels (standardized ß = - 0.289, p = 0.021), and LAGCS, LAGRS and LAGLS were correlated with diuretic treatment (standardized ß =0.440, - 0.442, and 0.643, p less then 0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS CMR-FT may be considered a promising tool for the early detection of abnormal LA and RV myocardial strain. LA and RV strain values are impaired in T2DM patients. The amelioration of LA strain might be associated with hypertensive compensation or antihypertensive treatment, which requires to be confirmed in larger trials.BACKGROUND Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analyses are recommended in patients with meningitis and/or encephalitis, but evidence regarding its diagnostic yield is low. We aimed to determine predictors of infectious pathogens in the CSF of adult patients presenting with meningitis, and/or encephalitis. METHODS Consecutive patients with meningitis and/or encephalitis form 2011-17 at a Swiss academic medical care center were included in this cross-sectional study. Clinical, neuroradiologic, and laboratory data were collected as exposure variables. Infectious meningitis and/or encephalitis were defined as the composite outcome. For diagnosis of bacterial meningitis the recommendations of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases were followed. Viral meningitis was diagnosed by detection of viral ribonucleic or deoxyribonucleic acid in the CSF. Infectious encephalitis was defined according to the International Encephalitis Consortium (IEC). Meningoencephalitis was diagnosed if the criteria fd good calibration. CONCLUSIONS Prior to microbiologic workup, CSF data may guide clinicians when infection is suspected while other laboratory and neuroradiologic characteristics seem less useful. While increased CSF lactate and decreased glucose ratio are is the most reliable predictors of bacterial infections in patients with meningitis and/or encephalitis, only mononuclear cell counts predicted viral infections.
