Drastic enhancements in both emission intensity and circular polarization of a Eu(iii) complex were achieved in 1-butanol solution in the presence of alkylammonium ions.
Although neglected by science for a long time, the sense of olfaction has received increasing attention from research areas including psychology, neuroscience, clinical medicine and nutrition. With the rise of psychophysical and neuroimaging re- search into olfaction, psychometric tools (e.g. questionnaires and scales) are the basis for the quantitative exploration of inter-in- dividual variability regarding olfactory related responses. The current systematic review is to summarize existing olfaction related questionnaires and/or scales.

Peer-reviewed literature on scales and questionnaires related to perception of odors were searched from online databa- ses (PubMed, Web of Science and PsycINFO). Twenty-one articles that meet the following criteria were included in the review "hu- man species", "no physical odor stimuli" and "describing the original development of the tool", and "with specific focus on olfaction or odor related responses or behaviors". The psychometric properties, advantages and possible pment and use of psychometrically sound measurements in conjunction with objective assess- ments will advance our understanding of human olfaction and olfactory dysfunction. The review provides a guide for researchers and clinicians alike to select olfactory scales suitable for olfactory research with different experimental purposes and specific samples.
The current review provides an overview of olfactory related questionnaires and scales, highlighting the emotional and affective impact of olfaction and the impact on quality of life due to olfactory dysfunction. With growing interest in olfaction as an important sense, the development and use of psychometrically sound measurements in conjunction with objective assess- ments will advance our understanding of human olfaction and olfactory dysfunction. see more The review provides a guide for researchers and clinicians alike to select olfactory scales suitable for olfactory research with different experimental purposes and specific samples. It has historically been difficult to find reliable, up-to-date information about educational technology trends, such as what researchers are studying and what tools practitioners are using, thereby making it difficult for researchers and practitioners to synergize their efforts in meaningful, socially-responsive ways. In this editorial, I analyze titles and abstracts of 7708 research articles from prominent journals over the past 5 years to identify common topics-such as "online," "mobile," and "learning analytics." I also extract links from 51,496 K-12 school and 1317 university websites in the U.S. to identify common tools that they are linking to-such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Docs, and YouTube. I propose that these sorts of metrics provide a baseline understanding for other researchers and practitioners to draw upon when situating their work and that they can also give us insights into areas that merit greater attention for addressing real-world problems.
Popliteal entrapment syndrome results from extrinsic compression of the popliteal artery by the surrounding musculotendinous structures and is a rare cause of limb ischaemia. The purpose of this report is to highlight potential mistakes in the management of popliteal entrapment.

In 2000, a 23 year old man underwent a popliteal to popliteal artery bypass surgery for what was initially diagnosed as a traumatic popliteal artery thrombosis. After being initially lost to follow up for 13 years, this "unspecified traumatic" thrombosis led to several inappropriate endovascular and open procedures misinterpreted as being caused by late graft failure. These included thrombectomy, aneurysmorrhaphy, polytetrafluoroethylene covered stent graft, a redo femoropopliteal bypass, and bypass thrombolysis. The diagnosis was reached 19 years after the initial surgery, when the patient underwent a redo bypass using a retrogeniculate approach. An abnormal lateral insertion of the gastrocnemius muscle medial head, and its accesgical release of the popliteal artery should be favoured over other strategies.
When no autologous vein is available for distal bypass in the setting of chronic limb threatening ischaemia (CLTI), new alternatives are required to solve the problems of availability, patency, and resistance to infection. An innovative technique of below the knee bypass for CLTI using a porcine self made stapled pericardial tube graft is reported.

An 84 year old man, admitted with right CLTI with foot infection due to long occlusion of the femoropopliteal segment, required urgent revascularisation. In the absence of autologous vein and cryopreserved vessels, a 4 mm self made stapled porcine pericardial tube graft 56 cm long was created from two 14× 8 cm patches, to perform a femorotibioperoneal trunk bypass. On day 10, bypass thrombectomy and balloon angioplasty of the distal anastomosis were needed to treat early occlusion. Oral anticoagulation was then started. Right toe pressure increased from 0 to 70mmHg, and no infection was reported. Complete wound healing was achieved. At six months, the bypass was still patent.

The use of porcine self made stapled pericardial tube grafts could offer new options for revascularisation in CLTI. Larger cohort studies with longer follow up are needed to confirm this successful preliminary experience.

Popliteal venous aneurysm (PVA) can lead to recurrent pulmonary embolism (PE) and therefore necessitates prompt diagnosis and treatment. PVAs are often asymptomatic, and their most common symptoms are associated with thrombosis. The clinical presentation of PVAs varies from asymptomatic to PE induced cardiopulmonary arrest, but there are few reports of cases initially presenting with transient impairment of consciousness.

A 75 year old man was referred with recurrent episodes of pre-syncope. He had normal vital signs and oxygen saturations, and his electrocardiogram was normal. Detailed interview revealed that the patient had suffered from calf pain and swelling before visiting the clinic. Therefore, an evaluation for deep venous thrombosis and PE was conducted. Lower limb ultrasound revealed an enlarged popliteal vein, measuring 20 mm in diameter, with a spontaneous echo contrast. Enhanced computed tomography showed peripheral pulmonary artery embolism. The patient was diagnosed with PE secondary to PVA.
