Scavenging was primarily by black-backed jackals; however, mongooses (slender, yellow, and water mongoose), Cape porcupine, and honey badger were also active. Remains were commonly scattered in two directions by jackals. The distance of scattering was heavily influenced by fencing. The remains were scattered within a maximum radius of 73.7 m. The remains were scavenged and skeletonized faster in summer. Jackals caused minimal damage to bone, isolated to superficial, nonspecific scores, furrows, and punctures. A few mongoose bone alterations were present as jagged gnaw marks on the angle of the mandible and gnawing of the vertebral spinous process. Cape porcupine bone damage included gnaw marks on the condyle of a femur and head of humerus, and destruction of the proximal and distal ends of a tibia. The described scattering pattern and bone modification patterns will assist in the recovery and analysis of scavenged remains found in peri-urban agricultural areas in South Africa.
Asylum seekers report exposure to human rights violations associated with a range of psychological and medical sequelae. Clinical evaluators can provide forensic evaluations that document evidence associated with their reports of persecution. The aim of this study was to characterize the forms of abuse experienced by asylum seekers, the psychological consequences of abuse, and the frequency with which clinician-evaluators found evidence that corroborated asylum seekers' reports.

We completed a retrospective chart review of 121 asylum seekers who received pro bono medical-legal evaluations through a human rights program and analyzed data using the constant comparative method.

Eighty-eight percent of the clients reported experiencing multiple human rights abuses. Ninety-one percent of the clients who received psychological evaluations presented with symptoms associated with depression, anxiety, or trauma and stressor-related disorders. Clinician-evaluators found physical or psychological evidence consistent with the clients' reports in 97% of cases. Forms, perpetrators, and psychological consequences of abuse varied significantly by gender and geographic region.

Twenty-five eyes of 25 patients (mean age 76 ± 7years) under alpha-lytic therapy, and 25 eyes of 25 control subjects (CS) (mean age 75 ± 7years) without alpha-lytic therapy, both scheduled for cataract surgery in the fellow eye, were included in this observational, prospective, non-randomized study. All patients underwent EDI-OCT during the first preoperative visit and approximately 1month (range 28-31days) after alpha-lytic withdrawal. The present study was undertaken to identify the cellular localization of Ang-(1-7) and its receptor Mas in the rat ovary in the different phases of the estrous cycle. Ang-(1-7) and Mas were localized by immunohistochemistry and Mas mRNA expression was assessed by RT-PCR. Immunostaining for both Ang-(1-7) and Mas was found in all phases of the estrous cycle, particularly in the thecal and interstitial cells, as well as in regressing corpora lutea. However, granulosa cells were positive only in antral and preovulatory follicles at proestrus and estrus phases. This pattern contrasted with the distribution of the octapeptide Ang II, which was abundant in granulosa but not in theca cells. In addition, the expression of Mas mRNA was demonstrated in all estrous cycle phases. Angiotensin-converting enzyme activity did not vary between estrous cycle phases, whereas prolyl endopeptidase activity was significantly higher in diestrus and neutral endopeptidase activity was significantly higher in metestrus.
